You mean, like Babelfish in Sindarin? I don't think such a thing exists! (and if it did, those things never translate correctly!) Your best bet is to beg a translation from someone (I know plenty of people on this board would be willing to give it a try), or learn the language yourself (they aren't very difficult languages to get a working knowledge of, actually).

Well, Orkybash has summed it up pretty nicely. There are a few "type in the text and it comes out in Elvish" translators, but they are usually not correct. Myself, Mánalinya, Wilwarin, and many others on this board would be happy to help you with translations. :)

Indeed! Just ask!

I wonder if there is a possibility of creating a better language-translator than the ones currently available, maybe a joint effort of those who have a good working knowledge of Sindarin and Quenya teaming up with a couple of programmers to create databases which will provide multiple options on translations, annotated with remarks giving you an insight on how to translate?
Just a suggestion... no more!!
As long as it is limited to English ==> either S or Q ... it should be do-able.
There are several programming languages that offer all tools to facilitate such effort.

Well, it's VERY difficult to write a translation program, simply because of the complications of language. This would be further complicated by the fact that Quenya and Sindarin aren't even close to being complete languages that can express whatever you can in English. But you seem to be suggesting a utility to aid in translation... I know there's a great electronic Sindarin dictionary, that coupled with a conjugation utility would take a lot of the burden out of translating (though irregularities might still pose a problem). Then all you have to worry about is the syntax, which isn't very detailed anyway, at least to my knowledge. At any rate, any effort like this would be difficult... though I've thought about taking on the conjugator! I'm rather inexperienced when it comes to programming, though...

I think Sindarin would be a hard language to program into something like that, what with the lenition rules and all. Quite a chalenge for someone who would like to give it a try!

Hi Orkybash and Wilwarin,
When I would have the URL for that dict you mention, Orky, and the basic grammar, Wilwarin, maybe I could come up with a flow for such program [ I am a free-lance programmer since 1969 tho my knowledge of most actual coding languages is rather rusty ;) ].
Difficulty has never been an issue, so I guess it wont be now either pfbbt .
If both of you can give me hints where i can find the stuff I need I will give it a try to program the main-flow, including exception-rules. In view of the limited time I have it is going to be a project that will take several months tho, I guess.

You can do that, really? That's cool. Here's the url to a site that has a good rundown of Sindarin grammar: http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/sindarin.htm It's kind of indepth though, you might not be in the mood to read through it all. I could type out a more simple version for you if you like, let me know.
And Orky might have been meaning The Sindarin Dictionary (http://www.jrrvf.com/hisweloke/sindar/), or the one at CouncilOfElrond (http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Dictionary&file=index&pn_vid=6&action=DictionarySearch) Both are good, and each has words the other doesn't. That should be a good start for you. Just holler if you need anything else.

Thanks for the URLs Wilwarin...
I'll have a look and see this weekend what is all there... for now I dont think I need a simplified grammar... always had a gift for languages, so I guess i will be able to 'digest' the stuff you pointed to :)
