Which is your favorite Middle Earth style of clothing from FOTR?
Personally, I liked Boromir's clothes the best. He was one styling fellow.

Hobbit wear! It was so elaborate..... and fit so perfectly with each one of them. Specially like Pippin's scarf.... lol

i love galadriels dress..but pretty much all of the elven clothes!!!
Catz
August 11th,2002, 04:36 PM
actually all of the costumes were amazing....the details were great and the matching of the three sizes of costume required for many of the major players was excellent......but as far as being a believeable costume......id have to go with Aragorns outfit.....so realistic and very well thought out.......for beauty tho youd have to go for the Elvish clothes...look at Legolas' costume......the finish, the detailing, such as the shapes of the sleeves...just the grace of the silhouette...(course the elf inside it doesnt hurt either ;) )

i'd say the elvish clothing, Arwen's and Galadriel's particularly. :naughty:

aragorn clothes were really cool....i love the bit where you 1st see him...and he has the hood over his eyes + is all mysterious.......i also like the ring-wraiths clothes....50 metres.....
Catz
August 12th,2002, 12:08 PM
yeah...you have to feel sorry for that poor guy playing one of the wraiths who fell off his horse into the river and then couldnt get back up because of the weight of the water in all that fabric...poor guy almost drowned in about a foot of water!!

:o Oh my god....dodgy! :elfeek:
I liked Boromir's too, Sindarin. I liked how the introducing of the red and gold detail gave him the regal look...you could tell he was a son of a steward.
I liked galadriel's sleeve...but i disliked the shape of the waist of the dress.
The only one of arwen's i liked was the outfit she wore when she was at the ford. Very nice...shame about the lips obscuring our view of the collar though... lol
Pippin's scarf looked very snuggly...aw! :cuddles:
In the DVD we see an elf with an orange dress on...i really liked that!:) Plus...the colours chosen for elrond's outfit...showing the autumn of the time of the elves...very clever... :read:
Overall fav is boromir's outfit. ;)

Pil
August 14th,2002, 12:18 PM
But seriously....i liked the detail we got with the hand in scenes with isildur when he cuts off the finger...the patterns are not beautiful in a nice way...but beautiful in a powerful and evil authoritive way.  :p
Sauron's armour this is...not isildurs'. ;)
TheRingBearer
August 14th,2002, 12:38 PM
I agree, but what happened to his helmet. Wouldn't Elrond have taken it back to Rivendell like the broken sword of Isildur?
Catz
August 14th,2002, 12:44 PM
I liked Saurons Helm.....looks like it was based on an animal skull, like a deer or something, almost human but not quite...
as to saurons armour, im pretty sure it got dumped into mt doom.....it belonged to the dark lord after all....Isildurs would have been taken back i guess...
:catz:
Nessa
August 14th,2002, 01:28 PM
Sauron's Helm I liked.... but I'm a little put off at the very idea that Sauron needed armor (gee, I seem to be the nit-picker of this board  ). In every adaptation I've seen of the Dark Lord he's been more of a demonic form..... I just thought all the armor was a bit cheezy.
Pil
August 15th,2002, 10:19 AM
I suppose...i think he had the armour on for effect...poser eh?! lol
But i completely agree with the cheezy thing...haha! roflmao

I didn't like Sauron's armour at all. They made him look like he was a cheap villian from Power Rangers or something.
I really like Aragorn's outfit, especially the coat, and Arwen's outfir at the Fords was really cool as well. I wanted so bad to like Galdriel's, but I agree the waste looked very odd. I did like Boromir's outfit, but I didn't like Aragorn's clothes at Rivendell. He didn't look very manly and strong in them, I hope in Return of the King they do better with his kingly clothes.
Lady Ashley
August 15th,2002, 09:05 PM
hahahah cheap villian from Power Rangers...I always saw Sauron as looking sort of like Darth Maul minus the horrid make-up job...lol Long, black robes, maybe leather gloves once in a while, sometimes bare hands clenched with the thought of overcoming Middle-Earth...ok, going poetic there...just the writer within...
lol
I like all the clothes! (though I must say I always saw Sam having a scarf and Merry with a striped hat...don't ask, I always see him as the head Elf in "The Santa Clause")
But all the clothes are AWSOME. Espeically the Elven cloaks! *wishes she could have one*

Does anyone else think that arwen's sleeves in the costume at the ford (you can see then clearly when she lies frodo down on the floor) look remarkably like crepe paper? roflmao
I like them....they're just a bit odd! :elf:

I liked Souron's costume a lot. I think that all that armour goes with the general theme of : elves love nature, evil things (ie. Sauron, Orcs, Saruman, etc..) abhor it and want to destroy it. The heavy armour is just so contrary to anything natural (like bare hands) that it serves the purpose really well. I especially liked the comment on the deer skull resepblance... nature perverted.
I do have to agree that all of the costumes were pretty remarkable... remember Legolas at Lorien??? that beautiful silk fabric??? very nice .......

I'm pretty partial to the wraith outfit. Everything I imagined and more. Love the way they bellow out when they're riding. The way the hooded area is totally empty and black, very creepy. Got goose bumps and a heck of a fright when I first saw them.
And their horses looked just as damn sinister.

I really liked the dress Arwen wears on the bridge in Rivendell. I also like Galadriels dress coz it looked like the Alan Lee version which i love.
I thought the wraith outfits were amazing, exactly how i pictured them.
I dont know why but i thought Sauron looked too small, he wasnt scary enuf. i thought the wraiths were way scarier than him.
Aragorn and Legolas had really good outfits too.
I could just go on and on....

I agree. The attention paid to making them look...odd, u know, trousers just a bit too short and stuff...
I also liked the purple dress and shawl thing that arwen is wearing in a pic with galadriel in the movie guide...not that it was included in FOTR or anything! It is very beautiful and i love the material it is made out of. I don't think the shawl quite goes...though it's nice...it looks like galadriel has put it round arwen's shoulders after taking it off her own. She seems to be comforting arwen...so it would make SOME sense... :)

ah fashion, how i love it. this is more my speed!!
galadriel threads (haha funny word) - perfect accept i don't like the neck
Arwen's threads - as much as i hate to say it, that girl stylin'
aragorns - perfect except what he wore in Rivendell, that lavendery grey blue color wasn't the best on him
hobbits - really liked the kinda late 1800's early 1900's look they were 'rocking'
boromir - the perfect outfit for a little, dare i say, arrogant rich kid (love him though!!)
gimli - exactly what i thought a dwarf should look like
legolas's - i thought it was very clever how they distinguished the type of elf he was using clothes, the color of the high elves are ornate and rich; varying from jewel tones(blood reds, beep blues), to barely there color (misty greys, greens, and blues) . while the wood elves, who's very survival depends on not being seen, they wore more earth tones (greens, greys, browns, tans) very clever
over all they deserved the oscar for costumes, the styles reflected the backgrounds and life styles of each character perfectly

That's another good point, Lasgalen. You're right. They didn't look like costumes. They seemed like clothes they would have actually worn. Like if you went into a bedroom in Rivendell, Lothlorien, Minas Tirith, etc and opened the wardrobe doors, you would see similarly styled clothing.

My sentiments the same! lol
My fave costume has got to be Eowyn's green dress! I'm always into medieval royal garb lol
And also Aragorn's garb. It really brings out the 'ranger' feel. It looks weather-worn, and yet has this sort of regal feeling about it... When you looked at him, you'd be thinking of him as Aragorn and nothing else!

I like Faramir's costume really well.
The white tree on his chest plate is really beautiful.
I love it so much becouse it looks like a crossing between a camouflage suit and an armour.
That suits becouse Gondorian Rangers are warriors who rely on camouflage but also act as soldiers.
The elven costumes are great aswell especially the Lothlorien clothes and I love some of Aragorns costumes (especially the one he wears at Edoras)
Lady Ashley
May 15th,2003, 03:39 PM
I like Faramir's costume too. But not that Gondorian armour. It annoys me. Since when did they where plate armour? They look like American football players shoulder pads with a strange, point helmet that annoys me. Though I can see why they'd be good...ram your enemy with the point, or tackle 'em with the shoudler pads.
But they still annoy me!!

I didn't mean the soldiers with plate armour (I don't recall Tolkien ever mentioning plate armour. He only mentioned chainmail) but I though the Rangers (without plate armour, wearing only light arour) looked good.

Oh, Hobbit, I didn't even read your post...I meant the regular Gondorian soldiers' plate armour I didn't like. The Gondorian Rangers were fine! And yes, I do not recall the Prof ever mentioning plate armour, just chainmail like you said.
I like the green-grey Aragorn Council outfit...I guess they wanted him to appear kingly when they told the ppl who didn't know already. (The bath made all the difference...LOL)

I have to admit that I like the ranger costume more because it seems to fit Aragorn's "personality" as a ranger perfectly. The pics for RotK also look great, but Aragorn will always be the Ranger in my eyes... :) Hmmm... I think I will comment on this again after seeing Rotk. ;)

I love the fact that Aragorn's kingly costume looks a lot like Boromir's costume... it shows Aragorn is going to keep his promise and that he will take the place of the fallin Boromir in Gondor (Boromir was meant to be ruler before Aragorn's linage was known)
Up to now my fave costume of Aragorn is still the Ranger garb though
Faramir's Ithillien ranger costume is my fave up to now

I really like Borormir's outfit. He looks awesome with the chain mail shirt and i really like the collar style he wears with his long vest over it. His leather bracers are my favorite though, very cool.
Aragorn is going to look awesome with that collar style and The White Tree leather armor.

I agree with you on Boromirs outfit Huor Falassion: it is really garb for a traveler, yet it is also the clothing for a warrior with the chainmail, and the long vest does remind a bit like armour.
I also like the fact that Aragorn's kingly costume is quite identical to the one Boromir wears for it shows that Aragorn is going to keep his promis to Boromir and that he took Boromirs place as the ruler of Gondor..
Plus the fact that he wears the white tree on his clothes, for it shows the king has replaced the stewards

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN THIS POST***
dont read if you dont want to know about ROTK!
well I saw those pics of Frodo and Sam in orc armour (the doll ones .... did you see them? before newline had them taken down?) and although they werent how I expected I thought they looked very cool indeed.
But...... at the moment I would say my favourite costumes are those of Merry and Pippin in ROTK! They are just fab and the detail is amazing! I wont go on about them..... cos I dont want to spoil it for people but if you want to see them I posted them in the ROTK topic in the Photo forum.
They are just wonderful...... and my favourite costumes.....so far.
Merry's is tops I think.

Hobbit
June 12th,2003, 09:17 PM
Yes, Merry is really cool in his Rohan garb... the detail is amazing like Beleriel said: on his armour the story of Eorl the Young seems to be told :)
But I like Pippin's armour even more: it's silver and black armour is almost like I imagined from the books... the only possible mistake might be the white tree (the same possible fault might be on Faramirs and Boromirs garb)
I thought the symbol of the King wasn't worn in the time of the stewards untill Aragorn arrived on the Pellenor fields with the banner of the kings.
I don't know if I'm right here though... and I actually like the white tree on Pippins and Faramir's suit ;)
Beleriel
June 12th,2003, 10:45 PM
oh me too! I love the silver and black together..... and Pippin looks altogether convincing. The gloves..... and the chainmail!! is sooo sparkly! to think its only plastic eh? you would never know it would you?
I like the tree design, I think it is wonderful and he looks awesome too!
Cant wait for ROTK..... eek! tis making me all excited with anticipation now! lol

I love the armour of Merry and Pippin. They look waaaay cool, especially Pippin's black armour with the white tree graphic on it. When they are donned in that armour, you'll no longer think of them as mere, helpless hobbits.
Hobbit
June 15th,2003, 12:14 AM
I agree. They look like true Hobbit warriors in that armour. :battle:
But Beleriel: I doubt the armour is just plastic: before the film it is said that they forged real chainmail for most armour.
But I guess we should stop discussing armour here: otherwise we might have to move the thread to the armoury.
Say, does anybody like the costumes of the ringwraiths: I think the robes looked quite cool, yet they looked too weatherworn and cheap.
This probably sounds really weird, but I hoped they would wear more expencive looking robes... maybe that would even look more evil.
And I would have loved to see the Witchking bearing some iron crown.. that would have rocked in my opinion.

Hobbit, I loved the Ringwraiths' costumes...as Nigila (sp?) said,"It thrills me beyond belief to see the Ringwraiths on screen." (referring to their costumes). I share this sentiment. I loved the way they moved, and I liked they way they looked. ;)
Amithrellas
June 15th,2003, 01:27 AM
I agree, Celebrian. The Ringwraiths costumes were really dynamic – pity the poor actors who had to struggle under the weight of all that material! :o
I loved Frodo's costumes, especially in Bag End. Brocade vest, velvet waistcoat, warm colors, sumptuous fabrics, but still maintains an earthy hobbit styling!
Catz
June 15th,2003, 03:43 AM
the chainmail was manufactured from plastic hose ;) other wise the poor actors would barely be able to move.......real chain mail is HEAVY ;)
still its much more convincing than just about any other effort at chainmail that ive ever seen on screen, since its made just like real chainmail, lots of seperate links, joined together.
and the white tree was the badge of Gondor, from well before the time of Aragorn, i think.

Oh no worries about some minor discussion about the armour, since we're just discussing how that costume makes Pippin stand out. Anyway, I think the Gondor emblem (white tree) really stands out well on the dark background. It kinda adds elements of elegance and grandeur to the wearer.
I did think that the ringwraith costumes didn't look grand and threatening enough. Heh... wealth does make one seem intimidating eh? ;)

Very true Las. But they haven't left on a true mission in almost an entire era so their clothes don't have to be torn and weatherworn. They were kings afterall so you'd expect more wealthy clothes (that way they would look even more dark)

:catz:
But if the used the badge way before Aragorn's time, then why all the fuss about the banner with the white tree.
Besides occording to the books, the white tree was the symbol of te kings and in the steward period the banners where plain white (at least that was whatI remember: I'm too lazy to check lol)
But I don't mind: the symbol of the tree looks quite cool on Pippin's and Faramir's outfits.

They were kings, but now are slaves to Sauron's will. Maybe he doesn't provide them with new clothes for each mission which would explain why they looked so worn.
Hobbit
June 17th,2003, 11:35 AM
Great point Las!
But I still think that new and very dark clothes would make them look more evil.
Just compare them to Darth Vader: Darth looked a lot more dangerous and intimidating when he had that perfectly clean dark cape and the shiny dark costume in "the Empire strikes Back" then when he was all dusty and worn at the end of "Return of the Jedi"
I think the Nazgul would look even more intimadating, if their dark robes weren't dusty and damaged: it would make them look more dark and indestructable.
Lessa
June 17th,2003, 12:24 PM
The trouble is it wouldn't look realistic as the robes are real and would get very dirty from all the dust kicked up by the horses they ride.

yeah the banner or standard was black as there was no one of the royal house to bear it........but the livery of the citadel guards of Gondor bore the tree, because they were officially in the service of the royal house of Gondor, and not the stewards

on the point of the tree etc.
I was reading this in the book last night...... the TREE stands for GONDOR so it would always be the livery of the Guards wouldn't it? Its the stars and the crown that stand for Elendil....so its when the two come together that Aragorn will have on his standard. I think! lol
eck..... that reads terrible! but Im too tired to change it! Sorry! I hope you understand it!

Thanks Beleriel. You explained just fine. Thanks for clearing things up for me.
I thought the tree was only part of the banner of the king but I was wrong. My mistake. ;)
But the white tree of Gondor looks very cool on Pippins armour and on Faramir's garb. The white looks very bright and... magical against the darker background.

I think Saurons armour is the best costume. It´s so great and cool and, oooh I want it. I saw a place where they sold replicas of the helmet, the glove with the ring on and the mace, but it was too expencive. The coolest swords are Sword of the Witchking, Sword of the Ringwraiths, Uruk-hai Scimitar and Haldirs sword. The one with the long handle like they used in the Last Alliance in the prolouge.

I agree, Lady Luthien, the dream gown thingy is cool too! I want to get that made so I can wear it to my senior prom next year...if I'm not too loserly to get a date...*sighs*

Nimloth
October 7th,2003, 04:55 AM
I adore Eowyn's clothing in particular. I'm recreating her Helm's Deep costume with my mother right now.
Also, I just love a yellow Elven dress that an extra wore. The character's name was Uriel (I think from memory) and I believe she was cut from the final print of Fellowship. However, her dress which is of yellow lace and silk, is exquisite. It combines classical Western with classical Japanese design elements and I adore it... even if I do look jaundiced in yellow (a colour few blondes can wear well. :p
Oh, and just a very small point... the silver tree represents the now dead and lost White Tree which grew in the Court of the Kings on Numenor. This tree was named Nimloth and was a descendant of the Eldest of Trees.
Elendil, I believe from recollention, stole into the Court of Kings and took from it a sapling just prior to Ar-Pharazon heeding Sauron's poisoned words and chopping it down.
So a very important little design feature of Gondorian regalia and heraldry...
