If we are going by book Eowyn and Arwen, then I say Eowyn because Arwen doesn't do a lot in the way of fighting or even much in the movies so we don't really know if she's any good at it or not - Eowyn on the other hand as proved herself to be quite a competent swordsmistress.

hence the line... "you are skilled with a blade?" by Aragorn TTT

Well, since Arwen didn't do any fighting at all, the only real possibility is Éowyn. Didn't she defeat the Witch-King after all?

Arwen did no fightning in the movie either... she just acted brave once, but she never really had to use a sword or any other weapon (rivers don't count ;))

so both movie and book, Arwen doesn't stand a chance

Eowyn definately. I think that this quote says it all.
Eowyn - "Women of this country learned long ago to defend themselves"

i fully agree!!

I think Eowyn would be better cuz Arwen doesn't do that kind of thing.

Arwen Evenstar

But I think if it was a match for Aragorn's love, I think Arwen would do better than usual!

This is a hard one, seeing as we have never seen Arwen fight. I can't really say anything on this one because I have never seen Arwen fight. We all know Eowyn is a fantastic fighter and exceedingly tough! But, it is hard to say.

I don't think nobel elven princesses like Arwen should fight in the first place.

Stormcrow
October 16th,2005, 11:49 AM
Neither do I. But seeing as we have not seen her fighting skills, we do not know how good she is. She could pommel Eowyn, perhaps. We may never know.

She was hardly mentioned in the books, so we don't know, she was more of a shadow, an inspiring courage for Aragorn, or something like that.

You are right, I wish she was more involved a little.

I agree, that way, we can actually see why Aragorn married Arwen, when I first read it, I just thought he married her because she was beautiful. Despite what everyone else says, I liked the extra romance scenes between A/A.

Aragorn and Arwen were destined for one another.

I still wish Tolkien put a bit more about her. In my eyes, he was in love with her because she was high, beautiful and noble.

Eowyn!!!!!!

Arwen vs Nazgul = "If you want him, Come and claim him!"

Eowyn vs Nazgul = "yikes"

Eowyn vs Arwen = Arwen wins any day, even if Eowyn may come from a warrior-kin and may have seen more battle than Arwen.

Sorry Naru - disagree there:

Arwen vs Nazgul = "If you want him come and claim him."
Eowyn vs Nazgul = Chops Nazgul's steed's head off.

Sorry Naru. The thing you mention was not even in the book meanwhile Eowyn chops off head very nicely in both places. Eowyn > Arwen :battle:

:hmppf: I stand by my decesion (arent i a stubborn one?:p ) Ok she might have curage enough to kill a fell beast but as the Wich King stood up and raised his weapons she suddenly didnt seemed so hard-boiled. Still i admit Eowyn is a brave fighter and have a strong spirirt.

Eowyn is brave, but I would say that Merry should get some credit for the slaying of the witck-king, because it was because of him that Eowyn managed to 'slay' him. The witch-king couldn't counter-attack because Merry made him weak.

I like your thinking Naru! :p

But we cannot deny that Eowyn stood up to the Nazgul in the first place, but who wouldn't do it to protect their much loved uncle? Arwen was ready to fight all of them at once. I personally cannot decide, Eowyn fought excellently against the Witchking, but Arwen was ready to fight them all! Also, Arwen is an elven princess of great power. Eowyn sure can fight, but so can Arwen I would say, and probably equally as good. And Eowyn did have a bit of a 'yikes!' expression. lol I still cannot decide, they are equally brilliant!

Who is braver Hmmm? The girl who says "come and claim him" with not a fear in her eye from the other side of the river knowing full well that it will rise and sweep off the Nazgul? or the girl who says "yikes!" with nothing between her and the Witch-King but a sword and a sheild and kills him anyway?
Let's put some perspective in here lol

I go with Eowyn any day! and that's just going by the film, from the book, definatly because Arwen does not do anything like that hehe.

Stormcrow

Yes, you are right about that Nessa. Eowyn stood between the Nazgul and Theoden (anyone would do the same for their uncle, though), and she destroyed the Witchking (with the help of Merry, I might add). It was a great accomplishment. But Arwen is great also, it was terribly brave of her to risk her life for Frodo's and challenge nine of the Nazgul, not only at the river, but in riding there and being followed closely the whole way...they are both brilliant. But I still favour Arwen.

Arwen Evenstar

Eowyn was extremely brave, she stood up for her uncle who she loved greatly, and who had cared for her ever since she had been an orphan. She was vey scared after she killed the fell beast, but when Merry weakened the witch king and he had had no power left, she finished him off.
I know people may think Arwen only set a spell on the nazgul, but she was trying to save this hobbit who she doesn't even know, and she had been followed as well. They are both great.

Exactly, Arwen!

I think she did have a glint of fear on her face sometimes when she was chased, like when she shouted, "Noro lim, Asfaloth!" again.

Stormcrow
November 12th,2005, 09:46 AM
Yes, but they were gaining on her and nearly reaching Frodo, who wouldn't? lol

Arwen Evenstar
November 13th,2005, 10:46 AM
But she still did it, and that's what I liked. I mean, she could have thrown Frodo off and she wouldn't be chased any more, only that's like betrayal to Aragorn for letting him down. I can see why she set a spell rather than fight the ringwraiths, because Frodo was really running out of time. But if she went straight on to her father, the ringwraiths might follow, unless Elrond cast a spell that is.
