I think John Boorman's Excaliber is my favourite fantasy film, apart from The Fellowship of the Ring.
I love the lighting, the music and the gritty fighting. Whats yours?

I absolutely adored Highlander with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert. it launched me into the wonderful world of sword play, immortals, Queen, and the tv series as time progressed.
sure, the Highlander movie series is being ruined but the original that started it all is still priceless. As is Queen's unofficial soundtrack, A Kind of Magic.

Ah..well the Lady Arien turned me onto Legend and I'd have to say that ranks up there with Willow as my faves.
I got a thing for Unicorns, Fairies, Wizards and whatnot, hence my atttraction to the Tolkien world.
But, :shhh: , keep that one secret.....hehehe
Oh yea.....and Highlander oh so ROCKS!!......

ah heck, lets throw Princess Bride in there as well. great movie, probably the cleanest ever made. Andre the Giant!!
come on now Illu...lets not forget the Elves...or, elvesses :naughty:
who could not like decapitation, rampant sword play and Scottish accents?
Catz
June 22nd,2002, 05:42 AM
ohhhhh so they were SCOTTISH accents.......you sure about that???:naughty:
*catz decides to go and play eleswhere for a bit....* lol

well, u're not going to get much out of Christopher Lambert other than the gruff voice that he was so *cough* blessed *cough* with. i'm guessing he skipped out on Accent Day in college.
but who knows

awww...come on Ronin...you know i cant resist giving you stick about the "scottish movie"....lol
Legend is an awsome movie....loved it....so beautifully shot...and Tom Cruise before he had his teeth done!!:p......and i had it on video.....and my copy got lost in a move!! verymad
What about The Crow ?...thats a fantasy movie i guess, if a somewhat gory one....but so visually powerful and rather haunting....neat soundtrack too....
and excalibur is gorgeous, but i have to watch it with the sound off, cos that daft cornish accent of Nigel Terry's drives me up the wall!!! Helen Mirrin was great tho lol
Princess Bride was cool....and yeah, very clean....(is that a reccomendation?)
and what about Fairytale? with Paul McGann and Peter O'Toole....i know a lot of people disliked it, but i rather enjoy it...love the way they integrated the fantasy elements into the mundane world, creating this little bubble of magic in the real world.....and McGann was excellent......

I love Legend, it's like the best film ever (ok not quite, 2 exceptions - rocky horror picture show + fotr). I watched it for a whole month over and over. I think my mum recorded over it though coz i haven't seen it in the last few years.

Its definitely one of my all time faves......and Tim Curry looks great in fishnets and heels...;)

Legend is the all time fave for me as well, although I've noticed that the version they play on TV has some extra footage that wasn't shown in the theater and isn't on the video tape...Gump going on at great length before the "toast to love".....I've seen it so many times I know the entire dialogue by heart....

Excalibur and Conan the Barbarian (can;t believe that hasn't been mentioned) Schwartzy has few lines but plays the hero part pretty good. Both have powerful music, gutsy sword play and Conan has chicks with swords... and James Earl Jones
BTW the guy who plays So-and-So the Gaul in Gladiator (duel w/ tigers scene) is also in Conan as one of Thulsa Doom's henchmen.

Aye, second the advance on Legend...fantastic movie. Heck, the Lady sold Illu on it....tho, saying that...not so hard to do :naughty:
Longshot, great addition. Conan is a great sword and sorcery movie. truly top notch...guilty pleasure, i must admit. btw, there's a 3rd Conan in the works for those who didn't know!

July 11th,2002, 06:37 PM
someone mentioned tim curry in fishnets and i wasn't there???? (unless of course you were talking about my post ages back...)
i recently saw scary movie 2 and something really bad has happened to him....he was REALLY fit in rhps + then something happened...i'm not sure what but if you've seen some of his recent films then you'll have seen the results!!!
Ronin
July 11th,2002, 09:55 PM
Curry is getting old, lets not blast him for getting a little....beside himself ;)
and please, y'all know the only guy u want to see in fishnets is me!!! lol
oh my....never heard of Conan *shut ur mouth catz* the Barbarian??? thats, honestly a first...never heard of anyone not seeing at least one Conan movie. established Arnie and hopefully, along with T3, the 3rd Conan will re-establish him. Conan is the ultimate guilty pleasure.

oh and just to stay on topic.....which of the two existing Conan movies did you prefer, oh fanboy? or anyone else for that matter....?
and has Arnie definitely signed for number 3?
should be interesting then...and lets be honest, Conan was always pulp fiction, so the movies being a bit cheezy, is kind of authentic lol ...the only thing that really bugged me about then was the long loving panshots over Arnies bulging pecs:rolleyes: ;) lol the man has bigger breasts than most women :elfeek: lol

1st Conan by far, second one had a different feel to it, just wasn't as good, tooooo cheesy, Beast Master cheesy
Have I dated myself yet?
Also, Dragonslayer was a pretty good flick too, Very cool dragon effects for the time
we even watched it in a history class to get a feel for the lifestyle of the Dark Ages
And speaking of cheesy...
Here's a trick, watch the original Star Wars with "this is going to be a cheesy movie" in your mind and see how irritaing it can be
Catz
July 16th,2002, 03:10 AM
ooooh Beastmaster cheeze....thats cheezier than Switzerland (apologies to any Swiss reading this  )
and i think i agree there Longshot, so i guess that dates me too lol .....i was thinking about this yesterday and suddenly remembered one that'll really date me...lol......the Flight of the Navigator....soooo dated now, but its fun, in a kiddy sort of way...and the morph sequences with the ship are surprisingly sophisticated.....definitely, to borrow a phrase from Dr Frank N Furter...."one from the vaults"
and one other, which isnt really a fantasy S/F, more a horror, but not quite either......The Seventh Seal, which starred Demi Moore, early in her career......was quite ropey in places but the premise, and the angle the story took was quite unique, and rather brave....

*looks up from smoothing down his fishnets...doing quite the model pose...perching his hands on his hips*
reclaiming the fanboy moniker now am i...well, been long enough...only fitting that it should be urs truly again. and two things, this fanboy ain't going in no dungeon again. for those newbies...i was tricked into that dungeon...Eowyn in there indeed. and second, i look rather fantastic in a tutu...thank u very much! pfbbt
and please, hardly dating urselves mentioning Flight of the Navigator, Beastmaster, or Conan....grew up on all 3. Flight of the Navigator, saw it when i was about 4 or 5....filled my mind with such imagination. Beastmaster...loved the first one. Campy, of course, but still...saw it when i was a kid and still have immense love for it.
As for the Conans. honestly, i like them both...thoroughly. the first, classic fantasy-warrior flick and probably one of the best ever produced. the second, Destroyer, is campy enough that it works for me. sure, the scene with the evil wizard does get a little boring...but, still quite enjoyable. and, in my very humble opionion, the music of the Conan movies (especially for Destroyer) made them what they were and are. and hey, Wilt the Stilt was pretty damn cool in Destroyer....effective. come on....who doesn't like large breasts? ;) :naughty:
and Arnie has been pretty much confirmed for Conan altho it really hasn't even been green lit yet. how could he pass up on the chance?
Reign of Fire...i'm still crossing my fingers on that one. Just hoping that it can exceed Dragonslayer.
Catz
July 24th,2002, 04:19 AM
yeah yeah, Ronin...and its not like you wanted to stay in the dungeon, now is it?......i mean its not like you stayed , even after we'd kicked you out, now is it? :elfeek: roflmao
and you are the one and only Fanboy, sweetie...posessor of the famous fanboy smilie:fanboy: and the wearer of the tutu and fishnets;) lol notworthy 'sides, no one else is as steady in the stilletos :elfeek: ;)
and so to topic....lol i liked the Conan movies...they're great fun...and as for mammary development....not on Arnold Schwartzeneggar, tho on others is a matter of taste ;) but it illustrates the fact that not every movie has to be deep and meaningful to be enjoyable, tho i do like them to have a plot and decent acting at least....
another fave of mine is Ladyhawke.....Michelle Pfieffer, Rutger Hauer, Leo McKearn and Matthew Broderick....such a visually stunning movie....lovely to watch, and gorgeous horses ;)

was tidying up my videos today and came across another of my faves......The Witches, from the Roald Dahl book, with Angelica Huston.....i love it....really catches that edge of black humour that Dahl has.....heheh...a lot of people think its too scary for kids:rolleyes: lol
and still another, from one of my favourite print authors, Ray Bradbury....Something Wicked this way Comes....a really beautiful film.....haunting and chilling in equal measure:cool:
