Hail and well met all you Roleplaying hopefuls! Welcome to the Roleplaying forum!

The following is a basic set of guidelines that one should know to successfully participate in roleplay. I've patched it together from my own experience and tidbits from other threads to make the ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WOTR ROLEPLAY! (dun dun DUN! lol)

I hope to jam pack this thread with tips and guidelines for roleplaying here at War of the Ring. Please bare in mind that this is a work in progress and it still needs the input and approval of Miss Dawnamira Nerwen, the other moderator of this forum. Also please bare in mind that I am far from genius, and am always open to suggestions and new ideas!

Without further ado, The Ultimate Guide to WotR Roleplay.

*THE OOC / WORD ASIDE THREAD*

The OOC, or Out of Character Thread, is for discussions, well, out of character. :p Think of an RP as a story told from the points of view of lots of different people, or like a movie, and you're one of the actors. Think how goofy LotR would have turned out if Frodo had turned to Sam standing on Mount Doom and said, "So, Sean, do you think I should make this face, or this face," every other take. (I'm laughing just thinking about it). All conversation that takes place out of character belongs here, ie stopping in to tell the other players you're going away for a few days and won't be able to post, asking someone to come and rescue your character, general conversation about the game, so on and so forth. Please remember, however, that these are not chit chat threads, and it is greatly appreciated that everyone stays on topic and leaves the latest gossip in the Pony or in PM's. ;)

*Though I've never heard of anyone being denied play, it is an etiquette issue to stop into the OOC(Out of Character) Thread corresponding to the RP you wish to join and ask permission before posting in the game itself. Also, be sure to make sure you're character fits the story. If they're trying to tell the story of Bilbo and the dwarves, you aren't going to need an elf following their every step.

When you apply for an RP (that's posting in the OOC thread) you need to have a pretty sure direction of where you want your character to be at the end of it.

*For each character you wish to play, please post a profile in the same OOC thread, or in the Character Creation thread if one has been created. Use other players' profiles for examples on what to include. This will give other players an idea of whom they're dealing with, your "appearance" and what not. A character profile need not be extraordinarily long or detailed, though it can be if you wish, but remember that sometimes it's fun to leave a bit of mystery for the rest to figure out.

Check out these examples:

Originally posted by Alcarohtar for the "Cleansing of Mirkwood" RP
Name: Alcarohtar
Race: Elf
Sex: Male
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Black

Background Information: Alcarohtar is a noldo elf from Imladris who spent most of his time wandering in the ME, alone or with Elladan & Elrohir, seeking for adventures.

or this much longer one:

Originally posted by Elvenwander for "The Last Alliance" RP
NAME: Authwen Randirel
GENDER: Female
AVAILABILITY: Not. She was bound to Gil-galad Ereinion who died a year after they were married.
RACE: Elf
PARENTS: Elrond and Celebrían (note: she is NOT Arwen)
AGE: 3,191 years (at the end of the third age). Born on September the 1st
EYES: dark blue (same as Celebrían’s)
HAIR: Dark chestnut brown (same color and texture as Elrond's)
PERSONALITY: Extremely reserved, talkative towards her few lifelong friends, stealthy, mysterious, serene, wise
WEAPONS: One Curved Long Sword, Two daggers, Two twin long swords, One Long Bow & Arrows. (All Noldorin, unless specifically noted, and all were made for a Gil-galad)
SKILL WITH SAID WEAPONS: Lethal
SKIN COLOR: Lightly tanned
JEWELRY: A bracelet, intricate in design, which incorporates a sapphire jewel in the center of the back of her hand. The sapphire glows when she has strong emotions or is using her magic. A crown that is made of gold, silver and mithril is woven into a triangular pattern fitting tightly onto her head (think Galadriel’s).
VERY BRIEF HISTORY: After her hubby died, she worked for The Necromancer, and was wholly evil for about 25 years. She still has echoes of the pain she inflicted on others. After that, she wandered as a healer and a freelancer. At WoTR she took up the crown her husband left her.
SIDE: not always good, she has her mean streaks
CODE OF HONOUR: Do not let your past slow you down.
*It is also a good idea to read through the story before joining, especially if it has been going on for a while, to get an idea of the location of the active players, setting, and current mood.

Either work just excellent.

*One line posts are usually not a real good idea. They are vague and rather open to interpretation, (not to mention they can clog up a thread without moving it along). If that is what you're going for, cool. But to better encourage whatever response you're looking for from the other players, a longer post is more appropriate. To build your post, ask yourself: What is your character thinking? Where has he/she been? What is his/her condition? Are they looking for something, wounded, afraid, jumping for joy? Are they out of place (a dwarf in an Elven Kingdom) or coming home (a hobbit sitting down in front of the fire)? And of course, what's your motivation? lol Ask yourself these questions (among others) and respond to them in your post.

Obviously, a 3,000 word entry is not necessary if you are merely engaged in conversation with another character, but a little clue as to your body language couldn't hurt. ;) Use your own discrimination, as well as your imagination.

*Always stay within the WotR forum rules and code of conduct. I know that when you're writing a story, the emotions and happenings may want to venture out of the PG realm, but remember, there are kids as young as 13 reading (and maybe younger) and parents checking over their shoulders from time to time.

For more posting tips, check out the thread "A question I bet many want to know but are afraid to ask."

Well, I can sit here and blab forever about this stuff, but I'm afraid the best way to learn is to explore some existing RP's. It's lotsa fun and if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Again, Welcome! And above all, HAVE FUN!!!

Regards, Tirithel (aka Luinil, aka Anorwen, aka Mornie, aka Uinen...;) ) and Dawnnamira Nerwen (aka Dawn, aka Commander, aka Mistress)

Hey all...got a little addition from Dawn here. I stickin' it up cuz she is still outta luck with her computer stuff at school. Here goes!

Styles of RP

An excellent question! ;) There are several styles used in Role-playing. But basically, as I said earlier, a RP is pretty much just a story told from different points of view. As such, we'd appreciate it if you used proper grammar and spelling. Reading through a very good RP and finding a post in Net Speak is extremely disappointing.

The basic style is just like a book. Here's an example:

Artanis glanced at the group surrounding her and sighed quietly. 'It matters not which path we take.' She paused and looked at the smallest in the group. 'They both lead to death.'

See what I mean? When every post in an RP reads like that (but longer) you've got a great team playing.

 Okay I just thought of something else too...when you're joining RP's, or if you're new to the forum, check the date on the last post to make sure it's still "active," so to speak. Otherwise you may be posting in a game that all the other characters have left, and will get no response. It's not a big deal or breaking a rule or anything, and if you want to revamp a "dead" RP, please feel free! There are some great stories that got started and never finished, but remember that it takes two to tango and you'll need other people to participate.

Okay, I'll be quiet again. :)

Hey there, Lohirrim. I'm fairly new here too (not to the site, but to RP). Really all you need to do is figure out which RPG you would like to join, read through it to find out what's going on, then make up a charcter that would fit into the general plot. Post your character's profile in the OOC thread. It would be better if you choose an RP that is fairly new, that way you're not entering into a story that's been going on for some time. At least, that's how I feel about it. If you're unsure if a certain RP needs any new characters, just post in the OOC thread for that RP and ask! (Though if I may make a suggestion, my new RP "The Downfall of Númenor" is really in some need of characters. So far we have only an OOC thread. But pleasse feel free to join!)

Anyway, there's really nothing hard about it. Look at me, I've been doing this for only two weeks! lol

Alright Tirith, feel free to correct everything I've just said :p ;)

One more question, can your character only be in one rpg at a time.

Sorry...

Anyways, not at all! My main characater is in two RPGs here at WoTR...And I use her at a few other sites as well.

Just try to keep yourself paced...don't join so many RPGs that you get tired of it. :p

This may seem like a wierd question but once an new rpg starts does it just keep going or is there a point when the story ends like in a book? Cause I noticed someone mentioned that some rpgs just stop being posted on. Is that due to people just not going on them or that the storyline is done with? Thanks!

Welcome to RP Lady Nenya!

An RPG could end like a book, or just keep going forever. I think ideally it would have a bookish ending because once you're out of plot, the rest is just mindless goop. ;)

And, yes, unfortunately, some RP's just end because people simply lose interest and stop posting. mecry You can prolly tell if they're actually finished or not by just reading the last few pages- if they tie up nicely, RP done. If not, RP dead. Boo hoo.

Hi Tirithel!
Thanks for the response. It seems like a great RPG community here. But I think I will just watch what's going on for the moment. I don't think my writing skills are good enough considering all the nice long lengthy well written post I've been reading. But thanks for the help!

I'm not new to role playing, but I do have a question... I want to join an existing RPG, but I don't want to have to read through 100 + pages. And, as far as I can tell, that's about the shortest RPG around here. So... do I just wait till a new one comes around?

This is a question which I asked once, too. But I can answer you.
FIRST:
If you like the RPG plot, go to OOC(Out Of Character) thread, and ask the people who are playing the game do they need a new character, should it be male or female etc. Then read about first and last five pages of OOC, where you will learn more a bout the plot and see characters profile.
And if you're accepted:
Look, you just have to read some firsts and last pages of the RPG itself, just to know a bit more of the story. It is always to read all, but if you don't have time for that, read the first 5-10 and last 5-10 pages.

If you have more questions, aske the mods, they will help you.

Okay, so if I wanted to make an RPG based on LOTR and the battle for the ring, what would I need to do? Here is what I was thinking...

You start off choosing a character from the list (characters from the books and movies which will be a very long list) and then you RP. Would that be alright? How does this happen?

Dawnnamira Nerwen

Sounds like it'd be fine...However, you might want to leave a few spots open for custom characters that fight in with the spirit of things. :) Creativity is a great thing.

Yeah, I made one and it is just all create your own character, based on the battle for Middle Earth. Thanks. ;)

This is very different than the other way I used to play. So we post a challange with any kind of description? Are we supposed to post what magic or skills we are supposed to use?

Whatever you like. Post any attributes you wish others to know. It is your character. However you like to RPG as long as it is following the rules of the selected RPG or if it is yours, make up your own specific rules, whilst still following the general RPG rules.
