View Full Version : Why I hate Lord of the rings!

I regret ever reading the book, it has consumed me just as Gollum was consumed by the ring. I am obsessed, at least 2 times every year I have to read the books, I watch the movies and some extra materials every week, I go in the internet to talk about it in many boards, at least 1 hour every day! I write fanfics, I read about the latest news from the movies every day, Ieven go to check how they are doing in the box office once every day!mecry

The worst part is when I'm lying on my bed and dreaming of middle earth and thinking of great stories, then you know you are in fact living in middle earth. I have tried to stop doing anything which has to do with LOTR for 1 month, but it is impossible!

My biggest friends are LOTR fans on teh internet, I have more time with them than my family.

I am truly obsessed, it is like going on drugs!:(

I regret ever touching LOTR, now there is no going back to the world I once lived, I am simply trapped in middle earth for all eternity....

Do anyone feel the same as me, does anyone feel they have losed the touch with reality?

Oops - looks like it's time to resurrect a LOTRs Anonymous thread. I think there is one out there if you search.

Your comments, though, remind me of how, when I first read the Lord of the Rings 30 years ago, It did hit me like a religious experience. Or a 'high' that I never wanted to come down from.
Or like falling in love. I think that is why so many people feel so attached to it. They all must be feeling something similar.

Maybe we should discuss what exactly was that style, or essence, or gimick, or what ever it was that Tolkien discovered that hooks people in so tightly.
Was it some kind mystical ability to touch the Universal Spirit?
Did he hit a resonating Chord in the music of Eru?
Is it like the Infinite numbers on a number line? Those mysterious numbers that have no end to their fractional expression?
Is it like a fractal equation with infinite cascading results.
Maybe it's nothing more than a communion of understanding that we all can share, and therefore feel less alone.
Whatever it is, if someone could bottle it, it would be better than Prozac.

For me, I think it was the part of the book when the company of three run into Gildor's elves walking through the Shire and stay the night with them. That suddenly took me out of myself and made me imagine a bigger broader more beautiful possiblity to the universe than just me, me, me. And of course, after that, I couldn't let go because I wanted to explore every niche of that world.

Be careful not to let it possess you though so thouroughly. You may prefer to have a life-long love of the novels rather than a passion that burns out quickly.

It does kind of take over your life doesn't it?? I read the book close on 25 years ago and have read it at least yearly since then. When I first heard PJ and crew were doing the movie my first thought was "NO WAY". I just did not believe that the book could be made into a movie or series of movies. Now I am not saying I think all three movies are perfect but I love them all.

I need to join LOTR Anonymous too!!

Miruvor where can I join the We love movie Faramir fan club??

I know exactly how you feel VoiceofSaruman.I read the books shortly after FOTR came out and since then I have come completely obssessed. My friends don't enjoy having a conversation with me coz somehow I always bring up LOTR(not every time but most times).I can recite FOTR and TTT Scripts word for word and I dream about what it would be like every night to be in ME.

I think it's all the hype at the moment with it.Maybe in a couple of years we won't be completly obssessed with it once it has all died down;)

I read the books 1st time when I was 12 years old, liked it but didn't understand everything and didn't appreciate it as much as when I read it again 2 years ago, 17 years old just before watching the films. Then the obsession came, I read silmarilon many times, the hobbit and Lord of the ring once every 6 months. I began roaming for more, read unfinnished tales and other books, started reading fanfics and wrote my own fanfics. The movies became a second obsession, I read news about it every day talked with people about it and so on. I just hope it will cool down, I am even loosing time on my studies and I spend more time infront of my computer than with my family and friends..

I don't want to let middle earth go, but if I have to choose between the real world and ME, I choose the real world!

But I can't let middle earth go, it is impossible!

Ahhh....more long term addicts! I am another 30+ year reader (and obsessor) of the books. I have never had a serious obsession problem until these darn movies! Now that I know others share my problems, I feel safe "coming out" of the LOTR closet. But the key, as in all things, is MODERATION. Seeing one of the films once a week, spending an hour or so every day online, or reading related books is ok, as long as you balance it with other things. I cook, work, and spend a lot of time keeping my house in reasonable order. (sure, I have LOTR music on at work and home, and computer wallpaper is all Aragorn, but hey- I'm obsessed! lol ) And, VoS, I also can't let go of ME...and there are days when I prefer it to the real world! But, as Frodo said, we will not always be torn in two...we will be whole here in the regular world, someday. Until then, enjoy ME!!

Thanks IDM:thumbs:
You're right about balancing things.I am sort of balancing it at the mo but soon I will be up to my eyes in schoolwork so it'll take my mind of it.
But it's great to know there are people as obssessed as me:grin:

There are worse things to be obssessed with...

As to me... I read LotR when I was 9... in love with Tolkiens work ever since... my greatest proof is that I learnt many rhymes and poems by heart.... and if there is one thing I hate it's learning by heart... but I just had to know these...

Anyway... I'm moving this to the pony... as it's has to do more with the enchantment with Tolkiens world (books, movies, i-net etc).. rather than just the book which is what this section is about.... hope you don't mind

Ohhh it is a pleasure (obssession, it could be)I don“t want to leave never. I would say to VoiceofSaruman, if you haven“t read the books you still you have so much more to be obssessed! ;) But someday for sure it will end (Not at all, a special feeling will remain), but enjoy it while it last.

I agree with Prince Faramir...enjoy meddling in Tolkien's world, but just don't let it get out of hand. There is nothing wrong with enjoying LoTR for what it is...an entire world.

and Prince Faramir: he has read the books...

Shazzle - some time ago a few of us were constantly having to defend the movie rendition of Faramir, knowing that everything was not just as it seemed. All you have to do is add the line to your sig and you are in. (Plus defend movie Faramir now and again. But that isn't necessary much anymore, since the EE version of TTT and now ROTK, has relieved everybody's feelings of dislike for him. Now he is pretty popular!)

It's so nice not to be alone in our obsession. I went to Barnes and Noble this afternoon and witnessed a touching LotR moment. Of course I was in the Tolkien section and observed a father buying a set of LotR for his daughter. Such a nice moment. The obsession will be passed on to the next generation.

I've watched all the movies so much I have all the characters lines memorized. I have ALL the books. Yeah VoiceofSauron, I kind of feel the same things you're feeling. lol

It is definately shocking to see to see that the LoTR obsessions can reach 30 years and thensome.

I first experienced an obsession a few years ago with the TV show La Femme Nikita. It was such a heart breaking gut wrentching experience that I swore never to let myself feel that way again.

In my defense, I have to say that I fought the LoTR with a passion. I didn't let myself be lured into the Middle Earth realm when I watched the two movies, I even had the will of delaying the reading of the books for years. When I read the Hobbit, I claimed triumph and marched gloriously into the fellowship. I knocked that down with no problem at all. Then came the Two towers and thought that there was no real challenge anymore so I jumpped right into The Return of the King with swiftness and pride.

It was the tunnel and Sam's corageous fight with the spider that gave me a mortal blow. All of my defenses broke when I thought Frodo had died. It was so sickenning I had to put the book down to recover, and then I made a great mistake....I took the book again and continued reading.

I'm obsessed. At least I know it and I've skipped the denial part in the recovery process, but look and see that there is no hope, or that this obsession can last for decades is just overwhelming.

I'm having Elvish dreams that are coherent like watching movies and I can remember them. I'm already studying Elvish, I've got a study plan for every single LoTR related book. And as soon as I'm done with the Silmarilian, I'm going to read LoTR again, and that is too much as I have never in my life read any book more than twice.

oy, oy, oy!

I felt silly thinking that I was the only late comer to this obsession, thank you VoiceofSaruman for posting this lol

January 6th,2004, 10:32 PM
lol I just bought the two extended versions and was looking to justify buying the two theatrical versions. lol

ImDaMom, it is so true, this is not a gutwrenching heart braking experience, it is lots of fun and by the looks of it it'll go on for decades and decades.

Hi and Welcome Erendiel

I have both the theatrical and extended versions of both movies and will buy both of ROTK. While I find I watch the EE movies more the threatrical has different stuff on the second disk than the EE disks 3 and 4. That could be justification??

I am so beyond obsessed... haha..and there are people like me too.. i am indeed very glad...
but my family thinks i'm crazy not to mention my friends.
I have more LotR things than i can count... I've had addictions and passions before but this one is beyond crazy.
i have 4 LotR calendars for the 2004 year... do i need that many is a question i want to ask  i've read the books a lot, have recently started to read "Philosophy and LotR" and have seriously started to get my family into it too. lol

i need help... some say i need psychiatric help lol (but must remember about school and reality and such) ;) (oh that's hard, precious, HARD INDEED!!!)

I'm so glad you posted this, VoS... you spoke my mind!
