View Full Version : How I would do the hobbit..

Here is my vision for the hobbit, in my opinion what we need to do is to make it more serious than the books by adding not by removing parts of the story. It should anyway be done in the same spirit as FOTR, it should be a real roadmovie feeling in the movie and the places we are about to see should be very different from FOTR so we still have the WOW factor (like not making mirkwood simular to Lothlorien)

How about beginning with Bilbo (as old) writting his story and taking care os some kind of prologue, something which gives us an even more profound knowledge about the hobbits?

And when the dwarves talk about Smaug conquering the mines and you actually see Smaug slaughtering brave stubborn dwarves who tries to beat him, you see Thorin's father beeing slained and so on. It could make an awesome action scene right from the beginning.

We should get to know Gandalf's real intention to start the little adventure and that is all a part of the war against the new evil which has been awoken in the east...

We could make the story more serious by showing more of Gandalf's adventure while Bilbo is with the swarves and showing the council, where they talk about Sauron (including mr Lee as Saruman obviously). We could also have Gandalf seeing somekind of sign the necromancer is back, I just ain't sure how.

we should of course have “Hugo weavings once again as Elrond and I have my own special ideas about what should be included here. Couldn't we give even more depth about the Numenorians here? Someone tells about elrond's brother choosing a mortal life, having a human father. Then Bilbo sees something numenorian and Elrond tells us a story about the numenorians, how Elrond's brother began the numenorian kingdoom and how it became mighty and powerful, we see many generations go and different kings sitting on the throne one after the other, until we see Al-pharazon was king, how he hated death, the gift gaven to him by the gods and evrything about how Sauron made him wake the anger of the gods and the consequences, the elf-friendly numenorians, Isildur and his father and how they started an opposition against Sauron..... (this would not give anything to the hobbit, but would give more background to LOTR and the numenorians history). Imagine if they could visualize this aswell, that would be awesome (kind of like how they visualised the prologue to LOTR, but with Elrond's voice). This is one of the things I want to add to give the story more depth

The other one is, the dwarves talking to Bilbo while they are walking about the background of the hatred between Elves and Dwarves, the whole story about the necklace and what happened thereafter. This one I don't want visualised, just another thing to give more depth to the story.

The spiders and the eagles should not speak, I don't know how they would do the eagles, but they could have Gandalf speaking about the eagles or something and him somehow communicating with them. The spiders should be mini shelobs, they could make alot of scary moments in the scenes with the spiders, unlike in the book.

Don't change any detail in the scene against Gollum, people will love to see as much as possible of their favorite character.

When we enter the realm of mirkwood, Legolas should be there at the side of his father, of course played by Orlando Bloom.

Mirkwood should be a very scary forest, where you get the feeling of it hiding evil in all corners.

I am concerned about the last war which should have a different spirit than the others, otherwise it will look silly. I look forward to the death scene of Thorin, which should be in the same spirit as Boromir's death and him appologising for his mistakes.

The city of men near the sea, should be amazing to watch and different from Rohan and Gondor, you should feel they have their own very special culture.

Smaug should be the highlight of the movie, he should be the best CGI character ever done, I am sure PJ will have alot of experience from LOTR and King kong when dealing with him. You should get the expression of him beeing very old and wise and his voice most be exactly the right. One of the highlight should be him conquering the mines in the beginning and later destroying the human city. I expect PJ to do the right thing here.

The movie should be 3 hrs and maybe a little more, no extended editions feels like needed.

Any other ideas, or disagreements to my points?

The topic doesn't mean how I would make the hobbit, it means that each of you should post how you would make the hobbit as I wrote about my vision, I hope to see more as I know many have excellent ideas (the idea of showing when Smaug conquers the dwarf mine came from someone else in another board).

Some things I am divided in, like if the dwarves should be as many as the book or only 5 and all of them with their own special characteristics- it is difficult to remember the amount of dwarves in the book, I can't even remember most of their names.

Yeah, well the dwarves (in the book) dont really have special characteristics mentioned, so it wouldn't be too hard to remember them. Also, there's the issue with their being 13 members of the group and adding Bilbo makes it a lucky 14. Also, why not have the Eagles speak? They spoke in the books, didn't they? I guess i don't really see it as a big deal if they do.

But how would the eagles talk in the movie? If they just used their beaks as human mouths and human noises came out, the audience may think it to be fake. It would be the same with the spiders.
But, if there was any way, I would like them to talk.

What do you think about adding the numenorian story and the dwarf-elf hatred background?

I thought of stories which could give the whole series more depth and found these to be the most important, we all know the silmarilon will never be filmed, so why not take some of the important parts (specialy for LOTR) of the book and put it into the filmversion of the hobbit?

I also think they should show what Gandalf was doing when he let Bilbo and teh dwarves alone.

Well, it'd be kind of hard to include any information that Tolkien didn't provide in his own writing. Then it becomes a matter of opinion: the screenwriter has one opinion, the director another, and the audience still another. If it can't be confirmed by Tolkien's own writing, it should be kept out.

I think that, if they do film the Hobbit, they should make the trip to the Lonely Mountain a lot shorter, and emphasize more on the dragon and the battle. It would be a more movie-friendly story line. They could cut out the trolls, because Gandalf and Thorin really should have brought their own swords anyways (lol) and probably some of the chasing around the elves/spider scene (not all of it, of course. That was a good part.) Other than that,

I think other histories should be left out as well. The Hobbit should feel like the book, as a tale about a simple little Hobbit who had an adventure. Leave the big stuff for LotR. But that's just my opinion! Don't trout me.

Hehe... maybe the eagles could be telepathic like Galadriel... you only "think" they're talking. Or something like that. I dunno.

Well, Thorin wouldn't have a sword becuause they are all poor, homeless dwarves. They don't really have anything.

Well, I was just kidding about that. But they'd have to cut the travelling down somehow.

Well, if they cut the troll scene, then they wouldn't do anything between leaving the Shire and arriving at Rivendell. I mean it shouldn't take up a lot of the movie, but that is a long distance. Plus, how would Bilbo get Sting?

Good point. Well, in LotR, the four hobbits didn't get their swords from the barrow-downs in the movie, and apparently it would have been futile to stab the witch-king with just another blade... it had to be one from Numenor. I don't know.
