Okay, I was hoping that The Hobbit Worship Thread would be a place for general hobbit swoonation, but it seems others have branched off. :)

Pippin has Pippins-Girlo, Merry has Pil, Frodo has A!Elbereth, so it seems I have the absolutely terrible job of devoting a thread to dear Sam. :grin:

A great character, portrayed by a great actor (Sean Astin), an all around cutie........... Sam.

Sam is important to me, also, because he supports Frodo. And of course, that would mean alot to me. If no one was there, where would Frodo be? Sam has the best virtues... especially when it comes to friendship

I kinda got freaked out....but i was also dying to laugh...she was looking around everywhere and whispering lol I told her to meet me in the comp room at lunch. I got there before her and printed her out a copy...since she liked it so much... She ran in...grabbed the pic...and scooted out. Sam was my favorite character in the books, and I was so glad to see how Sean Astin portrayed him in the movie. That was one of my main concerns, that they wouldn't pick an actor that would do Sam justice. Well . . . in my opinion, they couldn't have picked a better actor. :thumbs:

Sean Astin is adorable, even in his new svelte form. Love his portrayal of Sam. Sam is my favorite character, bar none. I really like the way Sam stands up for Frodo to Faramir in the new MTV clip. Sam's loyalty, courage and dogged (no pun intended) determination are the backbone of the story, especially in ROTK.

one thing i didnt like about the way the script was sorted out in the fellowship extended (and i think the regular one too) was when the hobbits leave Bree they made Merry be the cautious one about Strider...that was all sam in the books!!! and i dont know about other people but i felt they cheated him, because it almost made him look gullible. Sam, in the books, is really the untrusting one which to me just makes me like him more cause he is just looking out for his friends

Concerning Merry's suspiscion for Strider, I'm actually glad about the shift. Merry spent a lot of time being the clown, his being skeptical of Aragorn showed his shrewdness a bit. Sam maintained his natural suspiscion, I think, just by the expression. ;)

Anyway, I like Sam because he doesn't have any of those strong characterisctics (i. e., Merry and Pippin are warlike, Frodo is kinda out there, etc). Without dismishing Sam's role, I just don't agree with that, for it's a little bit distorting Frodo's role. Don't forget that was Sam who wanted to follow Frodo, and not Frodo asking Sam to come with him. (and, if we want to be honest, that was Gandalf, knowing the dangers of the mission, that insisted to make Sam accompany Frodo !)
In the film, we see it, in that wonderful and very sad scene where we Frodo is crying while taking his decision to go to Mordor *alone*, and trying to escape - still alone - until Sam joins to him. So, Frodo is not the "crippled" one (even if it's said with humour), unable to go anywhere without his gardener. But he is fine enough to enjoy Sam's presence (Sam is his friend), so it can't be considered as unable to do something without having someone on his side...
Although we can consider that, without Sam, Frodo would not have gone far (as he said himself in TTT). But nothing to do with a need to be always protected by someone : the mission is so dangerous that, of course, it's better to be "accompanied", that is to say it gives better chances to succed in the perilous quest.

oh boy. I really don't have anything against Frodo! REALLY! lol For me it's always a toss-up between the two (Frodo and Sam). I said it once, but i'll say it again: I never meant that Frodo was a cripple!! honest! it was only a simile/metaphor. Yah, Frodo was going to go alone and be all brave - like Tolkien said: "Courage is found in unlikely places." And I think that some of that courage came from knowing that he had someone to "share" this burden with - his trusting and loyal friend, Sam. Even in the book it said that Frodo only agreed to take the Ring out of the Shire in hopes of following Bilbo's footsteps and having adventure for himself: FotR pg. 61, "'I should like to save the Shire, if I could... Of course, I have sometimes thought of going away, but I imagined taht as a kind of holiday, a series of adventures like Bilbo's or better, ending in peace. But this would mean exile, a flight from danger to danger, drawing it after me. And I suppose I must go alone, if I am to do taht and save the Shire...' He did not tell Gandalf, but as he was speaking a great desire to follow Bilbo flamed up in his heart - to follow Bilbo, and even perhaps to find him again. It was so strong that it overcame his fear."
So, it looks like Frodo is afraid, and i don't blame him, i would be too if i were in his position. But if Sam hadn't gone with him (and yes, it was with Gandalf's help), Frodo wouldn't have made it far. He probably would have gone right off to find Bilbo instead of completing his mission. ~*~ But i say it again: I love Frodo and i don't think he's a cripple :)

Sam is a symbol of friendship, loyalty, determination, and strength... he was there for Frodo in Mordor the whole time and i think Sean Astin did a great job in portraying a loyal and sensitive thread.. he has all the qualities a gf/wife would want... loyalty and kindness... and i remember in ROTK, at the end where it was noted that Frodo was the luckiest hobbit to have a Sam still taking care of him... Rosie must be lucky as well =)

very resilient and always had hope...even till the end... i remember in the Mount Doom chapter, he had that inner debate with himself on what, why and how must he still have hope where every sign points to death when they finally would reach Mount Doom.... but then even though there seems to be no hope in surviving, he still sees the Quest through.... he's so very admirable indeed =)

another great thing that i love about the character Sam is again in Cirith Ungol: he's at the end of his journey, can't find his master Frodo, and has to somehow go alone to Mount Doom without him. And then, of all things, the torch blows out and he is now sitting in darkness... with no hope. And what does he do?? He SINGS!

I saw RotK for the second time last night, and once again Sam had me in tears.

When Frodo asked Sam for the ring back you could read his thoughts in his eyes. He didn't want to have to give Frodo back the ring when he knew it was causing him so much pain, and he was hurt that Frodo would think that he wanted the ring fro himself.
That was a fantastically acted scene

And there were so many times when I just thought "I love Sam!"
And I almost cheered when he picked Frodo up and carried him to the top of Mount Doom - go Sam!
And I nearly cheered again when he married Rosie... they are so sweet!

Sam is most certainly my favorite of the Hobbits, and my favorite character in the entire book :grin:...and the only on who makes me cry!! I've never cried in a film before in my life and I sobbed at the Grey Havens scene, not because Frodo was leaving, but because it hurt so much to see Sam so sad himself! :(

Sean Astin as Sam is always Best Supporting Actor of 2004 in my heart.

He does deserve an Oscar. I have seen it 7 times and he brought me to tears each time. Such a powerful performance.

I loved Memphis Belle, and also Toy Soldiers. One interesting thing in Toy Soldiers is there is a scene where he sits on the floor under a desk and sobs (for his friend's death) and it reminds me very much of his sobbing scene in ROTK when Frodo tells him to go home.
I also like him in the indie movie 'Boy Meets Girl' which I've watched 7 or 8 times. He really has some interesting but wierd acting bits in there that lets him cover the spectrum of styles.

(AND, YES, he has the Oscar in my heart, no matter who actually wins. I think (and hope) Tim Robins or Djimon Hounsou will win, but neither had to work so hard or stretch himself as much as
Sean did. )
