So many great and wonderful stories are contained within the Sil, which one is yours?:)
Mine would have to be Of Beren and Luthien. Being a hopefull romantic at heart:loveyou:, I was thouroughly enthralled with this story and have re-read it several times.
The lengths that both Beren and Luthien go for love, even after death is a love story for the ages.

I like Turin's tale, though it is a bit depressing, how can one guy be so unlucky!
My favourite is the Downfall of Numenor. But then I have always been a fan of the Atlantis myth.

i thoroughly enjoyed the Downfall of Numenor...but i'd have to steal an idea, as my favorite story if Turin's tale. i mean...so unlucky...but Turin, or whatever 1000 other names u'd like to call him, is just so utterly....ballsy. gotta admire that ;)

I think Of Beren and Lúthien must be the most popular story in The Silmarillion. It is certainly my favorite. It's not just a romance story, there's virtually something in it for everyone. I would love to see a motion picture made based on it.
My second favorite has to be the Ainulindalë. Many find it boring, but I call it "enchanting". It is the "highest" story in the legendarium. The very idea behind it I find intriguing.

Hate to go with the Flow, but my favorite SIl tale is definitely Turin's.
I also really like Fingolfin's Death tale. Don't know why, its just cool.

Woah, he is pretty cool but calm down. That's probably my second favorite part of the book.

One story that I really enjoy reading is the Saga of Feanor. His life was full of arrogance, betrayal, pride, and misery ... these are great ingredients for a tragedy! His betrayal of the Teleri and the kinslaying are shocking. This is one point in the book that made me stop and recharacterize Elves in my mind. You always imagine them as benevolent and angelic ... Feanor exhibits the weakness of Elves that we never take time to ponder.

i'll have to say that I'm most affected by Turin's Tale. So angsty and tragic, and yes, darn unlucky.
Actually, I love the entire saga about the Elves, from their beginnings, to the faded (?) strongholds of Rivendell and Lothlorien after the War of the Rings..... Algamesh is so right to point out that we seldom think about the hubris and violence of the elves.
I can't explain it, but The Silmarillion touches me in a totally different waay from LoTR. I adore them both though. I feel a greater sense of history and epic in Silmarillon, perhaps because it does cover a long span of time, and because the descriptions of the elves and their own history, are so meticulous, engaging and vivid. you do get a sense that the "wages of sin" are indeed paid by their descendants.
Ok, pontificate a little too much. see ya!

Well said Algamesh!
I too feel that the Kinslaying had far reaching impact throught all of the books, even as the last Elves headed into the west, the doom that was wrought by those events still had a part to play!
