Which artists who paint Middle-earth inspired paintings do you like? Pick any one.
I myself like John Howe and Alan Lee. John Howe has done really good character conceptions, like that one of Gandalf in the rain, Eowyn versus the Witch-King, and Gandalf fighting the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dum.
Alan Lee does awesome location paintings. You can tell he inspired the design of Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. And his drawings of Orthanc and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields rock.

A favourite artist would be tough to chose. But I know what I like and I like Ted Nasmith!! I love the detail his work and I can look at paintings of his for ages picking out different things. This painting I paticulaly like
http://www.warofthering.net/gallery/tednasmith/images/luthien.jpg

It looks simple enough, but you can tell which way the sun is slanted by the way the leaves chage to a brighter colour - there is the markings on the trees and you can tell that Luthien had been spinning by the creases on her dress - wonderful details!

Well, my favourite artist is Ted Nasmith (I like especially his "landscapes", like the ones of Rivendell or Gondolin)
But I like other artists too, like John Howe, Robert Goldsmith (unfortunatelly, I know only 2 paintings of him - link (http://fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images.php?collection=goldsmith)) and Michael Green (he has got many great drawings - link1 (http://fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images.php?collection=green), link2 (http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=My_eGallery&file=index&do=showgall&gid=102))

My favourites are John Howe and Alan Lee. John does great depictions of the characters and Alan does great scenery pictures. I also loved his depiction of the scene where Eowyn offers Aragorn the cup.

I also love the paintings Jeremy Bennett did for the films that can be seen in the "Art of" books.

My fave artist is Ted Nasmith. His work has such depth to it. He always manages to invoke different qualities of light into his paintings. I love that pic too Nessa! As well as his landscapes, but I especially love the way he renders buildings and statues. I really like the work of John Howe, but his buildings are never the way I imagine them. Nasmith really captures it for me - always the way I had it in my head. The first picture I saw by him was "Minas Tirith at Dawn" (http://www.tednasmith.com/lotr3/TN-Minas_Tirith_at_Dawn-Web.jpg) (on a book jacket for RotK) and it was just the way I had pictured it! A little spooky actually...

I also love the work of Tim Kirk and Roger Garland. Kirk's Orcs are my favourite Orc images and I just love the quality and imagery Garland has. My favourite by him is called "Tale of the Sun and Moon" (http://www.lakeside-gallery.com/sun%26moon.html) showing the vessel of Anar.

I've always loved Ted Nasmith's art the best too, but I'll have to say I have a new favorite. I love the way Kim Kincaid captures the personality and detail of her characters. I've never seen an artist capture Aragorn's and Frodo's eyes as perfectly as she does, and Gimli's portraits are absolutely stunning!! veryhappy

Oh and I forgot to mention, the one of Sam crying makes me want to cry too!!! She's that good!!!

All great artists, they are, but I like this woman's work in the Tolkien area...

But I like her picture "the Coming of Fingolfin" I love her use of color. Such a style I could never attain...one picture may have some nudity for those sensitive to such things. (I am not, if you are, sorry for posting the link...)

It's Jenny Dolfen, I think!! One of my favourites, too! Her artwork is just...GREAT!!! I love the one titled Golden Fields...it so melancholic and detailed...

Other favourite Tolkien artists:

Ted Nasmith-what to say? His art speaks for itself!!

Marta Aguado- the most incredible pictures of Luthien I've ever seen!!!

Hope Hoover-also on Elfwood, search her out!! :hooray:

These are but a few!! I draw, too, people say I'm pretty good, but since I do not have much time to create myself...I've sought out LOTS of art, especially Tolkien-based and fantasy one!! :elfqueen:

Over all, my absolute favourite is John Howe. His paintings - Tolkien or fantasy - are incredibly detailed and I was over the moon when I first found out he'd been picked as conceptual artist on the film with Alan Lee! The biggest surprise I got was when the Balrog came on the film and it looked just like John's original painting. Same applies for Gandalf! It's because of this his work means such a lot to me - he's very much an inspiration. ;) My fave paintings of his are "A song for Arbonne", "Ship of Destiny" and "Moria".
