Saw this on ComingSoon.net and in todays copy of USA Today.

Meanwhile, what about The Hobbit, Tolkien's own precursor to "The Lord of the Rings"? New Line has production rights although the situation is complicated by MGM/UA's distribution ownership. "There's a reasonable possibility that we can negotiate an arrangement," New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye says. The studio also has the rights to create its own original prequel or sequel to "The Lord of the Rings," but would pursue the projects only if Jackson would be involved again.

hmmm.... I don't think they'll risk filming such things... and I definitely don't want to see such thing

I think the only other Lord of the Rings movie PJ would do would be The Hobbit, which he does now have enthusiasm for (If New Line and UA come up with an arrangement). I don't think PJ would want to do a so called "original" LOTR film. And i hope nobody else would either.

I agree whole-heartedly... Goodness, I hope nobody ever tries to add any of their own story to the Lord of the Rings. PJ's LotR was already far enough away from Tolkien's intention.

(I'm not a purist... hehe...)

How do you have any idea what Tolkien's "intentions" were? You don't. You only have your own.

Unless you ARE J.R.R. Tolkien, you have absolutely NO idea what the "proper" intention or translation is. You have yours....PJ has his. Most people who aren't self-proclaimed purists have no issue's with Jackson's interpretations.

This whole concept annoys the **** out of me to no end.

it would never work. Tolkiens history of middle earth is so filled, that it would be hard to find a time to make up such a story, worthy of being a movie. Besides it would really dissappiont the fans, and it would lack the 'magic' tolkien created in his stories.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm not trying to interpret the mind of Tolkien, but I think he meant his story to be the way he wrote it. I didn't say that I had an "issue" with PJ's movies, I said they were far enough away from the original story. Adding a whole new story would just be too much.

it would be cool to see 3 movies dedicated to the simarillion. if not done by peter jackson mabey by speilberg, lucas, cameron so on and so forth. but thats highly unlikely. though it would be cool.

hmmm... I don't see the whole thing made into a movie.. but parts... maybe Beren and Luthien... or Turin

hmmm... i'm torn... although i'm not sure if i would like PJ making an original movie out of LOTR, be it prequel or sequel... based on what he did with the trilogy he may just do something really amazing... or it would be absolutly terrible... its one of those two extremes... but if he spent enough time on a great plot and brought Chris Tolkien into the project he could very well pull it off, it would just have to be something really special

3 films dedicated to the Sil would be really cool and probably more likely to be made... but i agree with Mirk, you can't make the whole thing

I would like to see a TV series of the Sil... I think it would work better than films.

As for a prequel other than the Hobbit... No. No way should anyone even think of making it. It should be illeagal. verymad

No, no, I would hate for them to make their own original ones. There's more than enough books they could use, they don't need to mess around with it themselves.

I agree, I would love to see some type of think for the Sil... tv movie, regular movie, whatever.

Original prequel/sequel? bad idear. The Silmarillion? Would be interesting, but very difficult as it spans ages. Key epics such as Beren & Luthien expanded and made into a screenplay, that would be interesting. Could even throw in some background scenes from the rest of the Sil, like they did in FoTR, just to sort of explain things. It might work.

I'm just too much a JRRT purist to see someone ELSE writing stories for Middle Earth, unless maybe it's Chris.

I'm shutting up now

why does everyone assume that Christoher Tolkien is the arbiter of all things LOTR?
hes not a good writer..............he has a regrettable tendency to put his own interpretations on things even when hes just compiling information( look at HoME) and he is NOT his father, and didnt know what his father intended any more than anyone else does
if they ever DID do a project with something original, based in the Tolkien world, i certainly hope that they would get a better writer than CT.
that said i cant see a studio taking that risk
the SIl, wonderful tho it is, is just TOO big and needs too much back story and prior knowledge of the world..........just think, even for Beren and Luthien, which is a pretty straightforward love/action story, youd have to explain the whole thing..........that Beren is mortal.........that Luthien is an elf..........what that means..............what a Silmaril is..........what thier world is...............a tough ask

the only way they could do a prequal/sequal, would be to have it when Sauron first makes the ring...and then, because they really wouldn't have a huge book to base it on, it would be...empty, literally empty in a sense of the depth of what the films had cause they had the books...it just...wouldn't be right!

There are some great writers out there, some a lot better than Christoher Tolkien. I' m sure if Peter Jackson was to involve likeminded writer/s it would not be too bad. Don't forget 90% of the paying public are not Tolkien purist's (As Jackson is not). I would not mind a bit of creative license as was seen in LOTR.

Since reading the book again, with some extra material, I would have thought there was a possibility of following Aragorn's life up to where we first meet him in Bree.

We could see Aragorns 'under cover' (sorry to use that phrase) adventures in Gondor, Rohan and the friendship he develops with Gandalf. AND of course, Arwen.

I don't think they should do an original movie...maybe it's just because I'm a tolkien purist. I'd be very worried about the quality of the movie. Even if PJ did it.

But I think that Beren and Luthien would be a pretty good movie. and I disagree with Catz...there really isn't a *lot* to explain...

I like the idea of Aragorn's early life (obviously, it being me.)

I'd like to see a movie of the Silm. It would probably require a narrator ... or each movie to be a different storyline ... or just follow one plot in the movie instead of all of them. Brad Pitt for Tuor, Gwyneth Paltrow for Idril, and the actor from Shakespeare in Love ... what the heck was his name? ... for Maeglin. I can dream, can't I?

there isnt a lot to explain??
how do you work that out then?
lol if youre steeped in the books and understand the Sil maybe not, but to a newbie? half of whom get lost in the SIl, even when they can go back and re read the bits theyre confused over?
explain in a 2-3 hour movie what a silmaril is, why its so important, what the big deal about Beren being mortal and Luthien being an elf is and what that means
i mean good grief, even Tolkien FANS argue those points......whats a total newbie going to do?
and thats one of the SIMPLEST of the stories in the Sil
its too big to explain within the limitations of a movie format imo
i dont think they could do it justice while still not losing those with no Tolkien background......and while it might be nice to think of them doing a movie for the fans alone, it aint gonna happen ;)
