I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy nut case!! I have several favorites, Blade Runner, Dune, hell, even Close Encounters to name just a few.:p

What's yours?

Ronin
June 17th,2002, 10:56 PM
U would have to limit me to just one?? blimey!! :o

well...The Omega Man is probably my favorite guilty pleasure/sci-fi flick. loved the classic Heston swagger in the midst of mutants...utter genius :p

but for fave Sci-fi, pure sci-fi...i'd have to go with one of my favorite movies of all time, The Empire Strikes Back. period

Illuvatar
June 17th,2002, 11:01 PM
Silly silly boyyy:fanboy:

Noone said the limit was one......in fact I named a few myself.......

And I'll give ya that one....Old Charles does good Sci-Fi....Planet o da Apes would be my fave as far as him being in it!

Fatty
June 17th,2002, 11:25 PM
Well I would have to agree with Planet of the APes, ESB, Blade Runner and Dune.

The Matrix is good though, but I guess it felt like a novelty film in a way.

My favourite film of all time is probably The Good, the bad and the ugly. But thats not scifi....................errr

Highlander, hmmm I never liked it, dated very badly, such bad accents, hokey sword fights and bad acting, still no accounting for taste!

I once saw a kinda 70's hippy space film called silent running, for some reason it was quite touching...............

Ronin
June 19th,2002, 03:53 AM
unbelievable....whipping me!!! :o shocking...i shall have to tell the Lady about this...hobby of urs :naughty:

completely forgot, for the moment, of Heston's great "monkey see, monkey do" turn in Planet of the Apes and such sequels. classic stuff.

Yes, my dear fatty, no accounting when it comes to taste when its learned that one doesn't like Highlander :evilcool:

i HATE luke skywalker. i know it makes no sense; he's the GOOD guy...but it's instinctual or something. aaaaarghghdhjg!!! mark hamill. :batty:

but yeah. i like everyone ELSE...just not Luke. and...i'm torn between liking and hating AotC...i don't know. some of it was SO bad...i loved the whole...is it pod thing?? those funky car things...but I'm personally thinking that Queen Amidala (her name escapes me...Padme??) is MAD...Anakin is a SCARY dude. SCARY SCARY SCARY. and i annoyed all my friends for hours analyzing him...Freud is fun...

but yes. Sci-fi.

let's go with The Empire Strikes Back. Because it's okay. and Yoda rocks.

Pil
June 21st,2002, 10:41 AM
Yoda DOES rock! Thanks for agreeing, finally! But i was a bit worried when he started fighting christoper lee in the recent film! Didn't you think he looked like sean connery with saruman hair and voice? Ahhh! I just cracked up in the cinema!

Illuvatar
June 21st,2002, 05:06 PM
lol.....

I have to agree with Pil...the wife and I openly cracked up when the Yoda thing broke out!!rofl

I mean had they done some slo-mo or something, it might have been effective, but at normal speed, he looked just like a little monkey jumping around with a lightsaber!!pfbbt

and to get back on topic:rolleyes: .....

I almost forgot another Sci-fi that I can watch again and again (especially with my new Trinitron and Surround System).....

The Fifth Element!!

Catz
June 22nd,2002, 05:37 AM
less said about Highlander the better, i feel:p
and Illu, i was with you all the way...right up to The Fifth Element ;) ....kinda like JP Gaultiers costumes...all style no substance...and Chris Rock was just soooooo annoying....tho it is fun to watch, ill admit ....my guilty pleasure...or one of them  and the soundtrack is pretty cool....
Silent Running....now thats an oldie Fatty...and yeah, even if it doesnt make sense it is a rather touching little movie...Bruce Dern did a good job....Planet of the Apes was cool...the original of course, not the modern rehash...
Tosca.....i just love the reasoning...but yeah, Empire of the SW movies.....
but my fave would have to be Dark City...a wonderfully paranoid, noir little piece of film...and it has Richard O'Brian  what more could you want?

Ronin
June 22nd,2002, 03:57 PM
well, Highlander was the first movie i genuinely watched and paid attention to....so...it'll always rest in my eyes as a great guilty pleasure. and hey, led to one of my favorite TV series and arguably one of the greatest "unofficial" soundtracks by Queen.
The Fifth Element is just fun to watch...Willis is just pretty damn cool and added much of what was missing to the anti-hero. and milla jovovich...well...added something different as well ;)
lets not forget Blade Runner, people, great, great flick. and exploding people....how's that for the right kind of penal punishment?
Dark City....loved it...probably one of the more enjoyable 'sci-fi' movies with true originality.

anyone ever see Dog Soldiers?

Catz
June 23rd,2002, 04:41 AM
lol ;)
yeah......thats what a good many of my male friends said about Mila....translation: what she added was very little costume :o
i actually have a real soft spot for a movie which i doubt anyone has seen, called Typhons People...its a bit clumsy, but its intriguing....and topical now, since its about producing designer people......
and Bladerunner.....of course, but the directors version i hope, without that tragic "happy ending" tacked onto it.....
Dog soldiers....why the heck does that sound so familiar?

tosca
June 24th,2002, 04:00 AM
i saw The Fifth Element on a bus across the country at 5 AM...so its details elude me, but i think i liked it.

i'm watching Midsummer Night's Dream which isn't EXACTLY fantasy...but i like it. :)

what IS Highlander?!?! i've never even HEARD of it and yall seem to have such...STRONG ;) opinion on it.

Bonos-Girl
June 24th,2002, 05:56 PM
well my favourite sci-fi movie (it's kinda one, really, ko it so isn't) is probably the rocky horror picture show, it' like my joint favourite film ever (along with lotr:fotr). does anyone read sci-fi books if so has anyone read the forge of god (i can't remember who it's by), it is soo cool. I read it on the plane to china which probabl took some of the atmosphere away from it but...

Catz
June 25th,2002, 02:40 AM
ahhh Tosca....where to start??;)
OK...Highlander 101 with advance apologies to all you Highlander fans
you ever see the Highlander TV series? with Adrian Paul?
well, Highlander was the movie that started that franchise...starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery....soundtrack by Queen...."Princes of the Universe"....*Who Wants to Live Forever*....there were a couple of other singles, which i cant bring to mind right now....
the reason it polarises opinions so much is, in my case anyway.....that it could have been so great and it wasnt....i mean....Sean Connery playing an immortal egyptian, pretenting to be Portugese....but speaking with a Scottish accent...while Lambert, who is French, is trying for.....and missing....a Scottish accent.....appalling...and just illustrative of the "it'll do" sort of attitude that seemed to permeate the production......and the sequels really knocked the nails in the coffin home.....
that said however....it did turn on a lot of people to SF/Fantasy, and a lot of people have a great affection for it as a seminal moment in their lives...put it this way....its fun enough of you put your brain in neutral first....;)
actually...what about Pitch Black ?
thats another fun no brainer...but quite intense and good fun to watch....

i love star wars but the recent ones are crap compared to the old ones. how can you hav star wars without han solo and luke skywalker and princess leia (sp?). I just doesn't work!!!

Catz
June 26th,2002, 11:44 PM
how can you make Star Wars withJar Jar Binks?????!!!!verymad
that.......thing.....has a great deal to answer for.....Lucas must have been :batty:

Jar Jar must die!!!!lol

Bonos-Girl
June 27th,2002, 08:08 AM
Awww, i like jar jar. hes soooo amusing. doesn't really add much to the storyline but provides laughs. Actually come to think of it, it would probably have been better if he wasn't in it.....

Catz
June 27th,2002, 08:36 AM

Ahhhhh jar jar BBQ....just what i like to see lol lol

Heres another obscure one.......The Quiet Earth....its an old kiwi movie, starring Bruno Lawrence, a NZ actor, now dead....its actually rather effective....and makes a virtue of the fact that they had a limited budget and equipment....now, i'll be really surprised if anyones seen that.....
And not as obscure but not a particular critical success, is PJ's The Frighteners, which i have a soft spot for....i just love the humor in it...."mah ectoplasms all dried up....." heheheh......and i loved the entity in it......very creepy.......
:catz:

Illuvatar
June 29th,2002, 11:39 PM
Whoo Hoo! The Frighteners!! What a good one Catz!! Quite the sleeper of a movie, but I enjoyed it very much!!

Did anybody see the sensory overload movie Event Horizon? I thought it was pretty kewl, but then I liked 2001 A Space Odyssey! :p

Catz
June 30th,2002, 07:56 AM
errrr yep....*laughs*...it was pretty cool to watch.....i just wish something had in fact happened...all that fuss and nothing really happened.....except for the whole cast being slaughtered in various inventive ways, of course...*grins*...hey.....wasnt that bit with Sam Neills eyes (or without Sam Neills eyes....) cool?
Did ya see Pitch Black?
:catz:

So many great sci-fi movies to choose from. Let's see....i loved the Original Star Wars Trilogy......hated Jar Jar in Episode One...what a waste of cgi space.....love the first 2 Alien films...The Fifth Element was good fun, Blade Runner...classic, The Thing (both versions)... always scares me witless, The Day The Earth Stood Still......classic sci-fi, the original Planet of the Apes.....and probably a whole host of others i can't think of atm.

Event Horizon was good...but like Catz said, apart from the slaughtering of the crew...what happened?

and...for the record...I really like Highlander:wiggle:

:elfqueen:

Mmmm the trouble is, i really want to like Highlander...and i think i could ignore just about all its shortcomings....except for those godawful accents.....
how about Labyrinth?....must admit it looks pretty dated now, but its quite a good little movie.....not great but a good way to kill a couple of hours....heheh....loved that bit where Hoggle is spraying the fairies:evilcool: lol lol
:catz:

Bonos-Girl

I love labyrinth, but then again it has david bowie in it so even if it was absolutely awful i would still love it. Old sci-fi/fantasy films are always better than new ones.

Ronin
July 11th,2002, 10:57 PM
Pitch Black, i was wondering when someone would mention it. For my money, one of the greatest sleeper sci-fi movies that never hit it. loved it...and can't wait for the sequels, with apprehension of course.

LOVE labyrinth and still continue to rewatch Event Horizon...sure, a nothing movie...but for its kind, one of the best thats been done.

Any of y'all heard of Reign of Fire? for my money, the next Pitch Black only with better acting...#%@$ing dragons and a great deal of push. my cup of tea

Illuvatar
July 12th,2002, 12:00 AM
Whoo Hoo!! DRAGONS!!!

Sure hope it's not one of those where all the best parts are in the previews!! pfbbt

Like the looks of it though!! Gotta see it!!

July 14th,2002, 12:03 AM
Well as for Reign of Fire....

Here's a review that I saw....http://www.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/12/ca.s02.review.reign.ap/index.html

They've pretty much trashed it! Has anybody actually seen it yet?

July 14th,2002, 06:50 AM
I havent seen it but I want to - not in theartres mind you- but I'll rent it 6 months from now lol I absolutely LOVE dragons.... but ya know - i didnt think it looked so good... My all time fav. dragon movie is Dragon Heart..hmmm I'll add a thread 'bout that

Black Rider
July 20th,2002, 09:07 PM
Dune was a great sci-fi movie. i've seen it twice, but everyone who sees it with me thinks its too weird. Star wars is of course classic, except for jar-jar, who is a waste of space.
i also rented the 10th Kingdom once from Blockbuster, if anyone's ever seen that. it's more fantasy i think though, but still good. long, but good.

Catz
July 21st,2002, 12:28 AM
i just cant watch Dune the movie....mainly cos they slaughtered the story....id rather read the book...
Mmmmm the Tenth Kingdom was fun...i have it on video....it is long, but thats because it was made a mini series, to be shown in hour long segments.....loved Scott Cohen;)
:catz:

Ronin
July 23rd,2002, 10:57 PM
Dune the movie was good-ish, adaption of one of my favorite books so...i have some love for it. Dune the miniseries is the most worthless piece of trash ever created (except for Chani :loveyou:).

Never seen 10th Kingdom, looks somewhat interesting. and as for Reign of Fire, shall check it out in the next few days...but i have a feeling i'll really dig it. fingers crossed at least ;)

.. watched Reign of Fire the other day... not bad really (teeHee)! The idea is a little far fetched but the action and stunts are pretty good... but as usual.. the bad guy ( in this case the 30 odd foot long Dragon)... who has all the time in the world to kill the good Guys (Bale,Isabella and the other guy!) ... doesn't... and in the end pays for his stupidity... sound familiar???!!
Remember the old film with Bruce Dern Fatty... isnt that the one where his cute android gets shot ??
Does Thundrbirds count.. loved them!!
Umm....Babylon 5 was very good... the whole series after the film.. loved it!!
Also liked Andromeda.... might have had something to do with Lexa though!!
Manga films like Fist Of The North Star , Akira and Vampire Hunter D.. also liked.
Lots more ... will have to think a little!

Anyone recall the movie Logans Run? Or how about the old Godzilla movies? I love cheesy sci-fi movies from the 70's.

BTW...
Empire Strikes Back is my all time fav.

I didn't care for David Lynch's film adaptation of Dune all too much.

The book was most certainly better. All the books in the series are.

The Sci-Fi channel's original film adaptation of Dune was better than Lynch's version, in my opinion, there was room for improvement.

The Sci-Fi channel is busy at work adapting the other Dune novels into original miniseries, so here's hoping they do a good job.

hmmm....i think i'll try to give my full list of favorites....hmmm...i like many many sci fi animes (japanese animation)...dune is good...planet of the apes is good...star wars is the best!....galaxy quest is really good lol....and i like many of the star trek movies...the list goes on

I love Star Wars! That's got to be my all time vavorite sci fi. Of course, my all time favorite SW film is ESB, but I really like AotC too. (My take on Jar Jar: He is a really good computer animation, the best I think, even better than Yoda, but he just lacks in any kind of character! Of course, you can then ask the question: what is 3PO for?)

Let's see... I also like The Matrix. And a have rented the Tenth Kingdom twice in the last two years, really like it!

Then there's MIB, I like the first one better. And who can not like Space Balls?

I'm probibly the only one here, though who is a Star Trek fan

No, wait! I'm not embarrased about that! I'm proud to be a ST fan!! :wiggle:

August 28th,2002, 05:24 PM
i liked Trek...the original one was the best...followed by DS9 and TNG...but not keen on Voyager....Brannon Bragas technobabble drives me nuts...havent seen Enterprise yet, tho the reviews ove seen of it have been good...
Galaxy Quest is a great movie:thumbs: heaps of fun lol

Oh yeah, I liked Galaxy Quest!

Also Back to the Future and Indepenence Day

I've been watching Enterprise from the begining and I like it a lot. I think it is better than any of the other Trek shows (MHO)

I like the original Star Wars trilogy and I LOVE X-Men.
Highlander was a cool concept, but watching the film more than twice is almost unbearable. I love the Matrix.

This is on the fantasy subject... If you like the Tenth Kingdom, watch the Merlin miniiseries starring Sam Neill and Martin Short. I really liked it. Has anyone read the Mists of Avalon? The book is good but the tv movie they made of it isn't that good.

And on tv I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

Bonos-Girl
August 30th,2002, 01:39 PM
i love the star wars trilogy...pretty much any film with harrison ford in has my vote but they were really good films as well....rocky horror is kinda science fiction.....my joint fave film (with fotr)
