I would imagine that ME didn't really exist because Tolkien wrote it to be a mythological account of how he thought the world came into being... Middle Earth is just a figment of the Professor's creative imagination ;)
You can find proof, i think, by reading Tolkien's Letters or his biography.... perhaps he elaborates on his make-believe land in those two sources. Also, if you want description of ME, the early formations are described in the Silmarillion. Also, you can see if you can use the Middle Earth Atlas as a source too.

Hope that helps. Good luck =)

"The Letters of JRR Tolkien" Edited by Humphrey Carpenter
"JRR Tolkien: A Biography" By Humphrey Carpenter.
"The Middle Earth Atlas" by Karen Wynn Fonstad
All can be found published by Houghton MIfflin. (not totally sure aobut the Middle Earth Atlas though)

Also, if you mean whether or not ME existed as a manifestation of lands before, I think Tolkien imagined it to be kind of like how Europe many thousands of years ago.... how it was before all the development was done upon the land by humans. Certainly, it has been said that New Zealand is Middle Earth =)

Not sure about newspaper articles.. i remember reading somewhere how he got inspired for writing about the Mines of Moria but do not remember the source... what specifically do you want the magazine/newspaper to cover in terms of his influence or how Middle Earth is described?

Middle-Earth only existed in Tolkien's mind. It was never a real rhelm.

It's only fantasy.
