I'm reading The Hobbit again and got to the elves bit but they don't actually say who the King of Elves is
Is it Thranduil in The Hobbit?

Yup, tho I think you're right the name is never mentioned... Thranduil is either the one and only king and founder of kingdom or is the king of the elves since his fathers death at the end of the Second Age, so there's no chance to be talking about another elf. (:

Thranduil took over teh Kingship of Mirkwood after the end of teh 2nd age when his father(and grandfather??not sure on that)was slain in the siege of the barad dur.

are you sure its not mentioned.......i must check that, maybe i just knew his name and assumed that it was said.

Yeah, Thranduil's father (who died in the 2nd age mecry) was named Oropher. Aparrently.
The guy in the Hobbit was indeed Thranduil! very cool as he is Leggie's dad.
I love the Hobbit- Thranduil seems so nice near the end. I'm rambling here. ;)
Sorry I'm just a huge elf fan.

me too, does anyone know what his name is supposed to mean?

Onilalle
July 8th,2004, 07:55 PM
What, Oropher or Thranduil? I think Thranduil is meant to mean something about a wild river, but I've no idea about his dad.

hmm.... good ol' Professor Tolkien didn't really give us too much info about Lego or his family... *pouts*

I know. pfbbt I wanted to know more! I wish someone would do that, y'know like someone who in some way was connected with Tolkien's family... wishful thinking lol

I've always thought the King of Mirkwood during the time of the Hobbit was Thranduil. and I thought they mentioned his name. hmmmm...

Vorneniel
July 28th,2004, 03:10 AM
i thought they had too, but i'm too lazy to go look

Mirkgirl

His name positively isn't mentioned in the original and in the bulgarian translation. However it is possible that some translators, knowing Tolkien's works and deciding that the elf deserves to be named, have used Thranduil's name. Either way, it is also positive that he was Thranduil. It's not a mark of good translator tho, changing this, as the lack of name usually is more than just "couldn't be bothered to think of a name".

Which actually is an interesting Q.... why do you think Tolkien never bothers to name him?

well maybe he wasn't important at the time. I mean, to the storyline. He was just an Elvenking, he didn't have to have a name. I think that in the index and timelines in the back of RotK and the Sil they mention Thranduil was the Elvenking at the time of Bilbo's journey and so that's why I thought it was mentioned in the Hobbit.

I guess he thought it'd be more effective? Still I think Thranduil sounds like a fantastic character and I can't wait to see how they portray him in The Hobbit film. That'll be interesting, by any means! ;)

i'll be holding my breath until it come out lol, which means in about five minutes the suspense won't be what's killing me lol, you know... i think Peter's gonna sneak Orlando in the way background somewhere for like one scene, it sounds like something he would do, what do you think?

Mirkgirl
August 2nd,2004, 11:08 AM
He probably will. Where's that puking smilie when you need it heh

Well actually I do not mind him mucking around. But it won't be enough for the screaming drooling bloom fans. So they'll prolly have him on screen half the time which will be a nuisance

lol Ah Mirky... ;)

I think it would be cool to see Legolas in the background. I somehow don't think it would happen though.

well, with people like Peter, ya never know ;) personaly i hope he doesn't, or can't, either way would be good

As much as I'd love to see Legolas again (ducks incoming trouts), I think it would take away from The Hobbit to see him. Plus, Orlando's upcoming film list is so extensive that I can't imagine him having time to do it. lol

Mirky, I may be obsessed with Orli but I certainly am not a screaming fan. lol I don't do that- it's really silly. rolleyes I doubt very much if Orlando's gonna be in the Hobbit... Laur's right; he has a little too much on his hands right now anyways. ;)

yes, it would be cool to see him (and Arwen) in the background of The Hobbit, but it would take away from the film. hey check out this (http://www.warofthering.net/forums/vbulletin225/upload/showthread.php?p=381315#post381315)...it's my way to start The Hobbit film.

Actually, being a totally crazed Legolas fan myself, I have a few new rumours on the Hobbit film!!!It seems we WILL see Legolas and...Aragorn in the film, though neither is mentioned in the book!!! Personally, I always wondered where Legolas was in the Battle of Five Armies... :legolas:

As for the king of the elves, it IS Thranduil-my...dad-in-law!!! ;) :legolas: !!! You should not forget...The Hobbit was written before LotR and Tolkien had no plan to write any kind of sequel at the time, so I guess he didn't think it important to name the king of the elves right then and there! In LotR, in the Council of Elrond, Gloin says something about the elven king not showing him and the other dwarves the same kindness Legolas said they treated Gollum with! :legolas:

Dear Eru, Ithildiel! :elfeek: Where did you hear/read that about Legolas??

Thranduil is my father-in-law. (don't I wish) lol ;)

Gwaihir

So it is certain that the Elven King in the Hobbit is Thranduil. I think that Tolkien simply didn't bother to name him (who knows why) until LotR.

Dear Eru, Ithildiel! :elfeek: Where did you hear/read that about Legolas??

Thranduil is my father-in-law. (don't I wish) lol

lol lol Well, since probably many people here also wish Thranduil was their father-in-law, we are not going to argue about it, right??? lol

Anyway, I read about Legolas and Aragorn probably appearing as guests-played by our well-known actors- at a link posted in the forum of lordoftherings.gr about the Hobbit film! I'll seek out the thread and post the link here, if I can...and if you'd like!! Though I think seeing them in the film might be a little...off, I always wondered where Legolas was during the Battle of 5 armies!! lol (I know, I know, probably not created by Tolkien at the time...but I still wondered!! lol )

Hadn't heard about Dragonball, though! I had heard about the Fantastic Four and the Avengers- the comicbook, also!

Vorneniel
August 12th,2004, 06:15 PM
yeah, in the four DBZ movies, he's playing the tallest, burlies human... i hope he's been working out lol :p

Great... :( I'm not a fan of Dragonball, I'll have to admit...Though I LOOOOOVE cartoons in general!! ;)

I'm looking forward to the Fantastic Four- Orlando as the Human Torch- and the Avengers- he'll be playing the Black Knight! One of my favourite characters!!! :archer:

I wonder...do we have any clues at all on who's going to play Thranduil in the Hobbit??????

:legolas:

pbbft, wish i knew, and more importantly who will play Bilbo, 'cause i'm gonna scream if for any reason it's Elija Wood

It won't be Elijah, I'm sure PJ knows better, besides even Elijah said it wouldn't be right.

lol lol lol lol Don't be hasty... lol lol lol By 2007 when they'll star shooting, Elijah Wood will be older, so he might make a decent Bilbo...
