I heard it this morning, although it'll be like in two years, since now he's working on a film of King Kong

You mean the two studios have sorted out their differences already?

Yea, i think so, that's what i heard

I'm shocked. Well perhaps the clean sweep and PJ's speech about at the oscars got them off there behinds then.

I had heard that PJ was definately going to be directing it but that it was still speculative as to which studio he would be doing it for.

i'd say more but they are definately being made by peter jackson, though new line wont have rights to distribute...that is MGM's right at this point in time.

Jackson himself said "New Line Cinema has the rights to make the movie, but MGM has the rights to distribute it". to quote jackson again "I guess MGM's lawyers and New Line's lawyers are going to have a huge amount of fun over the next few years trying to work it all out, I'm obviously busy for a couple of years on 'King Kong' so those lawyers can just go at it for a long time."

and to quote jackson yet again he said "I'd want Ian McKellen to be back as Gandalf, I'd want it to feel like it was part of the same mythology that we've done with 'Lord of the Rings'" and he mentioned that the feel and set locations would "have" to coincide with where certain shots were filmed. :)

i cant wait to see it, the hobbit is my fav book...so i've added mostly quotes instead of rumors and speculation.

Are you sure they're making it? Well it isn't a big surprise if so, but I still can't believe my eyes! :elfeek:

Nice! that movie wouldn't be the same without PJ and Ian

Definately, Pj is the man to direct that movie and I can't think of anyone else than Ian as Gandalf. It would be nice if Elijah plays Bilbo and John Rhys-Davies plays Thorin :)

I think it would look a bit messed up like that if Gimli played Turin and Frodo played bilbo hahah
IMO ;)

I think they performed very well in LOTR so they would do it fine in The Hobbit :)

Exactly my point

I think is awesome that they are making the Hobbit. But PJ should make it soon that way if he uses any of the actors from LOTR, they wont get out of character. Same for PJ. It's a hard book to do, but it will be great!!

ah, but try to imagine the confusion... well, regarding John there would be no problem, he's hiding under his mask anyway... but Elijah as Frodo and Bilbo? quite confusing, I bet! lol he's to much known as Frodo now...

Why not let Ian Holm play Bilbo? He was a good Bilbo...nice and miserable.

I knoow John loves the films but would he be willing to go through all that torture again seeing as he is allergic to te prosthetics.

Indeed, but he's too old to play a younger Bilbo, I think... unfortunately... :(

I can't really imagine Elijah Wood as anyone other than Frodo when it comes to these movies, so it probably might not be a good idea to have him playing the younger Bilbo. While I can't wait for this movie to be filmed, aren't some people going to be bored with it? As my younger sister put it, it's going to be "Gandalf, Bilbo, and 12 Gimli's." And is PJ going to have Andy Serkis as Gollum again? And what about Howard Shore's music....won't it be weird if the Shire theme isn't playing when Bilbo is shown at Bag End? I just hope that this movie ties in as a good "prequel" to The Lord of the Rings.

I heard Howard Shore would do it if he was asked. Andy Serkis is in it for sure. The Hobbit in someways will have a harder chance of success than LOTR did since it will have to live up to the standards set by LOTR, hopefully it will since PJ is doing it.

hmm i dunno if Ian Holm is "too old" to do Bilbo in The Hobbit..

since he got the ring, it prolonged his aging.(that spellt right?)
Remembering the "You havent aged a day" comment from Gandalf.

However if he is too old in real life i dunno, with a little make up
and plastic padding im sure they can work it out. lol ;)

Not Elijah, it would look really bad and confusing for the people that don't know the story really well... :(

lol I dont think hes too old, is he?

Yes, and also he has to get some kind of copy-right laws cleared up or something...

Night Wolf
June 29th,2004, 07:49 PM
the only copywrite laws are that MGM/MIRAMAX (i think?) have exclusive rights to distribution or something, but as PJ said there's like 2 years for them to battle it out in court and see what happens. either way it will be made, its just that Newline want the best deal and so do MGM, in the end they'll strike a settlement and the film will be made.

Yay!! The Hobbit!!
I think it is great that PJ gets to make the Hobbit!!
But, I dunno if Elijah and JRD would be good for such main characters. I mean, it would be weird seeing Frodo in Bilbo's clothes and Gimli in Thorin's clothes. I really hope they use Ian again though. Maybe they'll bring Ian Holm back for Bilbo too. They can probly make him look younger, like he looked in the very very beginning of FotR.
It will be a little sad, though, to have a movie with PJ and Ian but no other members of the LotR cast. Maybe PJ could get all the cast and put them in minor roles and completely change the way they look, so they won't be confused with their other characters that they played, but they'll still all be together.

Basically, MGM/MIRAMAX owns the rights to distribute the movie and Newline owns the rights to make it. I really dont think they "battle it out in court" as you said. They basically are gonna come up with a deal so that they both make a ton of money.

I'm glad this movie is being made. BTW it will be much easier to film/make this movie, due to the simplicity of the plot. There is also much more character development via bilbo and gandalf. P.S. Beorn is gonna own, and if he cuts out Beorn like he did mouth, ill toliet paper his house and burn new zeland

as far as I know they don't even have a screenplay or something like this yet and you're already complaining? calm down, for Pete's sake! wait with getting angry until there is something to be angry about! :p veryhappy

:nono: I thought that PJ was making KING KONG? I am sure that as soon as he finishes that movie, he will get to working on the script for THE HOBBIT.

PJ IS making King Kong and nothing is settled yet...but because of some kind of buy-out it might be!

Well, I'm glad to hear that the Hobbit is most likely going ahead... I hope it lives up to the hype though. I'm sure Ian McKellen will be fine but a different Bilbo is unthinkable. We'll just have to see how it goes :p:)I suppose Hugo Weaving would be in it as well? And do you think Orlando Bloom might pop up in Thranduil's court?

I am personally glad that PJ is finally making "The Hobbit". I knew he'd have to do it sooner or later. But will he make "The Silmarillion"?

Abendstern
July 24th,2004, 09:59 AM
 The Silmarillion covers some thousand years with hundreds of characters... not very likely that they're able to bring that into a movie script... :p
But it would be possible to pick some of the single stories there... I would love to see the tale of Beren and Lúthien on the screen...

PJ might not be able to film The Silmarillion because being as complex as it is...it would take greater ability to produce. I'm NOT saying that PJ isn't up to it, no, I mean that it could probably be made a 20 years or so. Because then we could use more digital stuff to help the storyline. But as Abendstern said, maybe he could do some of the stories! That would be SO cool!

PJ´s crew pfbbt doing The Hobbit, that really scares me, just imagine everything they will change with no reason ..ahhh. The Hobbit book is perfect the way it is, and easy to turn it into a great and faithful movie without need of those stupid changes and additions.

Ohhh nooo :nono: I ´don´t want to see Legolas stuck where he should not be! , or Arwen, or Aragorn, or Gollum and the battle of 5 armies taking more time than it had on book!!! :nono:

White Lady of Rohan

Altho I agree he shouldn't really have lines; it's the Hobbit we wanna stay faithful to.
