View Full Version : Launch of my Site!
IronHills Dwarf
March 23rd,2004, 06:28 AM
This evening I uploaded my new site:
Middle-earth Warfare (http://users.iglide.net/usborne1/Iain/Middle-earth_Warfare.html)
On this can be found my "Elven Swords" essay illustrated with color artworks complete with artwork descriptions. The site graphics are a tad crude at the moment but this will change over time.
I hope you all enjoy the current essay, you'll find the reading experience (for those of you who already read it in its rough form as I posted it on this site) much improved. The text has been edited to include some new material and the artworks certainly enhance the experience.
My latest essay, covering the history of Orcish weaponry and tactics, will be uploaded when it is finished. I'm also open to other suggestions for essays.
So come take a look!
Feedback is preferably directed to my e-mail account, which is listed on the site, but I'll give it here for good measure.
i_norm2001@yahoo.com
But you can also reach me through the Private Message system of the forum here.
I sincerely hope you all enjoy the site. Bookmark it!
your's,

Thanks Gil Galad, glad you enjoyed it. I'd also like to say if anyone has a particular weapon from the books (preferably from the First Age) that they'd like to see me try and draw just let me know. I'll add it to the list of things to try.

Well it was going to go up this past week... but fate, or should I say my ibook had different thoughts. While I like a light show as much as the next man, I'm not to happy about the screen of my 'puter trying to imitate a disco ball.
So once I get that little thing ("such a little thing") fixed, it'll go online. Right now I'm on a borrowed machine without of course all my files *bangs head on table violently and calls for another wodka*

roflmao Pity I'm not there to help you. I mean help with the ibook issues, not the head banging issue. lol Hang in there, you'll get it sorted. ;)

i have to say i love the sword designs. you should see if anyone could produce some of them. i'm planning on smithing some swords in the next couple years but i wouldn't have the skill to do your stuff for a long time.

I've hopefully got a smith already, who's extremely skilled. So with a little luck some of these will see reality in the future. I'm always excited to hear of people hoping to get into smithing, its a truely wonderful craft I'd like to have a go at sometime.
I'm glad you like the site! If you have any ideas for a Tolkien based weapon you might like to see a design for let me know.

Greetings Iron Hills Dwarf--I am a neophyte to these forums and as always I tend to sway toward the arms and armour area of a forum when I come to one---I was looking over this thread, and took note of your site--I did have a question as to whether you were a metal smith or not--but your post answered it, might I inquire who your smith is? My good friends Joe Piela and Jenna Brocious of The Lonely Mountain Forge http://www.thelonelymountainforge.com does the work for my fiance and I. They have numerous recreations of arms and armour from Tolkien's tales---but recently are responsible for the arms and armour of the forthcoming film Ancanar http://www.ancanar.com/armoury/index.php
By chance are you a re-enactor? We do alot of rattan combat--thanks for the site!
Best,
Anthony aka Olyanë Wolverine Clan, Tuchux

I'm glad you enjoyed the site Anthony!
To answer your questions, I'm not currently involved in re-enactment. As a university student I just don't have the spare cash for arms and armour. So I design what I can and just hope that one day it'll be made. I'm planning on asembling some maille this winter but I'm not in a position to commission blade work with my finances.
The fellow who has expressed an interest in my designs in Nilion Elentano. A British smith. You can see his webpage here (he's still in the process of setting up his forge right now).
http://eldayncraftworks.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/
So with luck you'll be able to purchase the designs at some point. I'd be happy to answer any other questions if you might have.

Hi there folks, it has been a good while since last I visited.
Have been talking to Illuvatar during the last few days between breaks from our respective flu and bronchitis but well I'm putting something together for him, and well to make WOTR my home as it should have remained all the time.
At last I have a forge coming from the U.S custom made for me by Darren Ellis. It has taken me more than I wish it had, something similar here would have costed me $4,480 (just because it's made in Britain, sounds more like the bloody moon to me, like anything in Britain). This one I'm getting is just $500 in contrast, so quite a difference. The only thing is that the exclusivity on the blades is probably going to be given to a british retailer, however I plan to make a line out of that from what IHD and I have put together, and whatever else we can put together, including some combination armour items, and well it would be lovely to see it all here. There will be a few nice surprises in store for you all folks ;) :)
Most of all I'm very happy to be back!
P.s Great stuff in that site of IHD , don't you think folks? there are some things that need playing about with, but overall as a conceptual design I reckon it will yield some truly lovely weapons, just have to start making them hehe

Great to see you back again Nilion!
Wonderful news about the forge, (isn't everything in Britain expensive? :p ). Some features of the designs will certainly have to change for physical items, but that's to be expected. I'm going to stick up a few more designs in the next few days.

Yes everything is very expensive in Britain, trust me, that's one of the things to consider when I do pricing of my pieces, especially because I want to stay competitive and keep selling outside Britain.
Certainly some details will be played with but I will inform you of which and why, let us know when there are more updates mate and keep up the excellent work!

Nilion if you get the chance take some pics of your new forge and post them. I'd love to see it. I'm sure it will be a far cry from the corner of my garage where I dropped in my own forge. Definatley to small for swords, though I don't think my skills are up to trying a knife yet.

I will certainly do Orc. Have been in touch with Darren since and we are adding forced air burners, which means that I will need a blower, but still even tho it rises the price a little it is nowhere near outrageous.
Forge (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/eellis2/EllisCustomKnifeworks/My_Homepage_Files/IMG_499.jpg) That's the layout of the standard horizontal ones he sells. 14 inches long and 8 inches in diameter all for about $190 I believe. So basically I'm taking a longer body of 27 inches and the same diameter and I get my custom forge, tho I reckon mine will have to sit in a four legged frame. Then it's time to order my japanese dog face hammer, and make use of the tongs and anvil and through and well generally have loads of fun
Ahh I also told Illu I would send you guys some merchandise of all sorts to be reviewed, but Illu's wife told him that the jewellery won't look nice on you :o hehe so will have to send you some weaponry when something can be sent your way
Anyway how's your own forge doing? I only saw once your first pieces but then I didn't check again.

Nilion,
Nice forge. What are you using for fuel? Its definately a lot more slick than my coal burning fire pot that I rigged up an old coal burning furnace blower to. (At least I never have to worry about NOT having enough air flow).
Unfortunatley my forge has been pretty quite for over the last year mostly due to my year stint in Iraq doding mortars. I did get a chance to play a bit when the weather hit a high note in december, but right now my slack tub is frozen solid. I'm waiting for it to warm up enough that I can get out to the garage and first clean up everything that it has accumulated while I was gone and then get back at the forge.
Definately love to see some of your stuff!
