Yes, that's right, they're usually jpg's (and I'm quite sure that all of the thumbnails are jpg), they're definitley not bitmaps... The size of thumbnails is mostly around 1.5-3KB, so they are not too oversized too... ;)
Unfortunately there're thumbnails which are much bigger, like those pumpkin-piccies you can see on the main page atm (approx. 55KB). I 'll have a look round, whether I could decrease their size somehow...

hmm...I've thought about Merri's problem and sometimes I've a similar one - it can't be my modem, I have dsl, but the thumbnails won't show (the site's loading and loading) and it slows down every other site I've open... I usually have to quit the browser and come in again...

Did you meet with this problem only in the main page, or in random pages?
EDIT
And I almost forgot something important did anybody of you meet this problem after the upgrading of PF?

it's the whole photoforum... and it's definitely the photoforum - first I thought my modem's damaged but after I figured out that the rest of the internet pages works more or less fine before I enter the photoforum...
well, looks like I'm not the only one with this problem, I've found a topic in the technical help section and Illuvatar answered This sometimes happens if your firewall or internet security has script blocking enabled. I've just popped into the photo forum and back here and other places on the site, and evertything seems fine. Please try disabling script blocking, and see if that helps. well, I'll try this the next time the problem occurs, but I'm not entirely sure if it's my firewall... :(

i've fixed the bitmap problem (it was my computer...sorry), but i have also found that problem with the pages taking forever to load. usually i can be in the photoforum for like 10 or 15 minutes, and then it just stops working, and i stare at a page with empty boxes... :(

And how about your firewall- (and other security) settings? (script blocking, cookies, etc.)
