View Full Version : The Escher Thread

I noticed that thare was not a thread dedicated to M. C. Escher, so, evidently, I decided to start one lol.

Somehow, I managed to persuade my art teacher to let me study Escher for my GCSEs. My teacher's reluctance was the result of no one ever managing to pull off a succesful Escher inspired piece (because, as part of the course, we have to make our own work based on the work we have studied). But somehow I persuaded him to let me. I've done the working drawing, which can be seen here (http://images3.deviantart.com/i/2004/104/0/f/Metamorphosis___full_piece.jpg). If you think that's long, you should see Escher's 'metamorphose', the piece that inspired it. It can be found in the gallery of http://www.mcescher.com/.

Wow that's a very intresting artist Saruman! I can see where you got the inspiration for you picture from!

All of them are great but this one I like especially http://www.mcescher.com/Gallery/symmetry-bmp/E8.jpg
It took me a bit of time before I saw the blue horses, I like pictures that have an element of suprise hehe

These are wonderful and surprising and some a bit wacky...I love the way the architectural rules are totally disrespected! Your fav is beautiful, Nessa...lots of the pictures where one figure cahnges into something completely different are very nice. I also enjoyed the one with the koi a lot!

I'm trying to do something like that waith salamanders. It's very hard, even when you know the rules. You have to make the shape recognisable, but also fit the rules.

Will you post your work here when it's done? Pliiiis?

Of course, when it's finished... lol
So far I have managed to tessellate a grand total of two salamanders.

Whooo, I've tried tessellations, they're tough! Salamanders, huh? I want to see this...

I love Escher, I have a pottery vase with interlocking crabs on it that is very Escher-like ;) anything Escher is cool

I learnt how to draw tessellations here (http://www.thinkquest.org/library/site_sum.html?tname=16661&url=16661/). When I started my GCSE piece, the maths students took more interest in it than the art students!
As for the salamanders, I think I may be getting somewhere lol...

I've done the salamanders in ink, and they are here (http://images3.deviantart.com/i/2004/136/b/7/Salamanders.jpg).
I also have done the neat version of Metamorphose. I just managed to complete it in the 10 hour exam, with about 2 minutes to spare! I need to take a photo of it, since I don't have a 2.5m scanner... lol

Hmm...that's weird...I had no troubble seeing it. This type of art is very intrigueing...never ending, almost like a celtic border...has the same appeal anyways!

Bet you took a deep breath when you were done, Saru...2 minutes isn't much indeed!:)

I've done two new ones... I quite like these ones, because the shapes seem to fit better than in the salamanders.

Garden Gnomes (http://www.deviantart.com/view/9362936/)(lol)

Finally I got in! Both are great, you're really getting the hang of this tesselation-thingy! I agree the gnomes are best, and they do look a little like worried ballet-dancers! My son insidentally said it is a lot of Dumbledoors! lol Myself I think they are a little shortlegged for that tho.
