Hello there!

I'v been bumping the peps in the Sil. Forum for a while now and
they told me to bugger off and go borther someone else...
Nah just kidding ;)

They Told me to ask at this end of the forum cause
you peps might have more information conserning my
questions.

Me and a Friend of mine are building a module for a PC game,
based on the First Age of Middle Earth.

We ran into alittle problem with the appearance of the general troops
of the varius(?) houses...

Got a link from one of the peps in the Sil Forum so now i atleast
know what general colors they all should have.

Next prob. was the weapons..

Now i'v managed to scrape together enough information about:

Fingolfins troops. (app. mostly axes cept Fingolfin & his guards)
Fingons troops. (Same as Fingolfins)
House of Hador. (same as above, Hurin had an axe though right?)
House of Haleth. (same as above)
Im guessing the whole lot of Dwarves used axes.

Gondolins forces. (Spear & swords, atleast one of the 12 houses used bows)

Laiquendi i think had bows and shortswords as favord weapon.

Missing information on the Following: :(

Fëanorians.
Finrod Felagund
(favord weapon of the forces in Nargothrond wich is what im really after in that case)
Bëors Men.
The people following Angrod & Aegnor.
Cirdans people.
And Thingols troops in Doriath.

If Anyone got any information about all this stuff i'd be really
happy if ya posted it

Oh shucks, I just got some free time why not...

First off my sources for the First Age are, Unfinished Tales, and the Silmarillion. I don't happen to own that *other* series (Lost Tales and the like) and I have issues with their reliability. So I'm afraid I can't reference the entire Fall of Gondolin lay for you.

What I'll do is give you what we know about each group and then what we can infer about each group, fair enough? All righty lets get started.

Basically we have many references to swords and the Noldor, I can find no reference to the Noldor (specifically) using axes. The sword is often associated with the Noldor in a general way (see first pages of Chapter 13 of the Sil).

The axe we know was used by the Sindar. This includes those Sindar in Gondolin.

So basically you could say Noldor favors sword, Sindar favors axe. However we also have many cases of the Sindar using swords (Beleg, Thingol ect...), Thingol's armoury was filled with axes, spears and swords. We know that both the Noldor and Sindar used bows. Fingon's people had horse archers. The marchwardens of Doriath used bows as well.

Basically what I'm trying to get at here is that there is allot of overlap.

Gondolin was a mix of Sindar and Noldor, and used sword, bow, axe (only the Sindar) and spear. We don't know how many Sindar used spears and swords and axes as well as the Noldor.

The houses of men did seem to favor the axe. However they also used swords bows ect...

Dwarves used axes, but also knives, and (inference here) most likely swords, and spears as well. (they made much of Thingol's initial arming)

So really I don't think you can get to specific in this area.

Basically I would say that:

Sindar favors axe

Noldor favors sword

Men favor axe or sword

Dwarves favor axe

In depth the best we can say is:

Fingolfin himself used a sword

Fingon's people have used bows against the dragon

Barahir's people used spears when rescuing Finrod

People of Haleth used axes

Sindar of Doriath used axes, swords, spears, bows

Dwarves used for sure axes and knives probably swords and spears as well

Gondolin as a whole, spears, swords, axes, bows

Fëanor and Sons of Fëanor: for certain swords (Maedhros), bows (Celegorm)

Nargothrond: Archers for certain

Green Elves: bows

Angrod & Aegnor: don't know, but as they were hunters most likely bows

I hope this helps somewhat, I haven't really had a chance to do allot of digging for you but if you have further questions throughout your design process for the game let me know, my e-mail is available in my profile. You might also find my website interesting, also in my profile.

What game is this for?

In the Lost Tales 2 there is a complete list of weaponry the Houses of Gondolin used.
It may may be LT1 but the description appears in the Fall of Gondolin. Some used maces, spiked clubs, swords, archers. He was quite detailed and even described some armor.
This list does not appear in the Sil though.

I'm working off memory here so...

Whoa..
This is great stuff.. :)

Will be coverd for a while now atleast =)

Sadly enough the game (NeverWinter Nights) wich
we are making the module for, dont have horses.
so Fingons peps will have to be running til the day
a patch or update gets horses into the game.
A CEP (Community Expansion Pack) has come out
that did include horses, but they are sooo bleeding
ugly i just cant find the will to put them into the mod.
Looked like a horse made out of cardbordboxes. :(

Oh btw you got detailes on "all" the more famous
characters in the First Age?
Thinking of Weapons now... =)

Like Huring i know used an Axe befor he was captured,
dunno if he useda sword prior to this event or not but
if so i'd be glad to have the information.

Fingolfin used a sword, that one we even got a
name on too wich is a great detail for the mod.

Thingol had a sword wich was also named,
dont remember what name it had tho but
think thats easy to find in the back of the
Silmarillion. ;)

Turgon had also 2 swords i think...
both we have a name on.
Tuor used an axe in the fall of Gondolin..
dont know the name it was given tho.

Fingon.. ? cant remember his personaly favord weapon
to use in combat.
Same goes for Cirdan & Finrod Felagund.

I'll go with bows for Angrod & Aegnors people but
swords for themselves. Swords for the Fëanorians
and the Sons of Fëanor.
(mod. is gonna be centerd around F.A 450 so Fëanor will be dead.)

Think i'll go with spears & bows for Cirdans people..
or if theres any text saying otherwise.

Other then that i think we coverd the whole favord weapons
among the general troops. :)

hmm.. only thing im seeing as a problem now is the
personal favord weapon of famous characters.
If ya got that already stored somewhere,
i'd be really glad if ya posted a nice long list for me to save

Oh and if any of you remember any texts where roads are mentioned,
(not the ancient road and dwarf road, got that one coverd already)
Just simple text saying: (s)he took the main road from
[place A] to [place B] that went across/through/side
off the landscape around [place C].

Have asked this in the Sil. forum but with limited resault. :(
I would sooo much like to stick to the story at every aspect
of this module..

Thanks for all the help, will be coverd for a while now

Tuor: axe-Dramborleg

Beleg also had a special arrow, sorry don't remember the name

don't know if this makes a difference but the Prof made a specific reference so...

Eglamoth of Gondolin had a curved sword, no name but it was a singular occurence.
