Hi, I'm new here ;)
I'm not sure if this was already discussed or not, or if there's already a thread for ideas for the hobbit, but here are some ideas I was just fumbling with. Add your own ideas if you have them!

I agree with most people that Ian Holms shouldn't be Bilbo due to age, but what do you guys think of the movie starting out with him as the older Bilbo writing at his desk and then having the movie be a flashback type thing? He could start out writing "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit..." Similiar to the "Concerning Hobbits" scene in the FOTR EE. I think it would connect The Hobbit to the LotR trilogy. (If The Hobbit does ever get made that is...)

I also think it'd be cool to see John Rhys-Davies playing Gloin

Another thing I was thinking about was the Aragorn and Arwen meeting. I think they do meet at around that time...maybe alittle bit before, but since they didn't show it in the trilogy...But then again, it really woundn't have anything to do with the rest of the movie since they dont play any part in the book at all...just an idea... :( ok, not a very good one either...anybody got any other ideas?

Actually I always thought they ought to let Elijah Wood be young Bilbo, but well... it might remind people too much of Frodo?

You heard wrong. I think that date is from the fake preview that was made for it.

I like the idea of Ian Holm playing Bilbo
but John, playing Gloin mmmm no way! :nono:
It's just because the people will not understand thath one is Gimli's father
because it's the same actor as Gimli.

I don't remember where, but I read, 3 actors from LOTR will be in the Hobbit
Ian Holm, Ian McKellen, an Liv Tyler

nahhh..i still have Frodo in mind playing him lol
I hope Ian Holm is Bilbo though... how old is he?
Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis should definitely be back as Gandalf and Gollum though...

Im pretty sure Ian Holm won't play Bilbo. He's like 74 or something. I know he's like 10 years older than Ian McKellen. And he i heard that he does have some health issues. Yeah, he looked fine in that one scene in FOTR, but that was only one scene. He'd have to look younger for the entire movie.

It's very difficult for me to envision this, mainly because i LOVED the cartoon version when i was a kid and have a hard time detaching myself from that image...

Although, I'd LOVE it if PJ got his stuff together and made that happen... i'm trying not to hold my breath though.

it would have been nice having ian holm playing bilbo again. although if it is like you say,Faramir, well, it would be best if they chose someone that we don't already assosiate with a Tolkien-character. the whole idea of having Elijah playing bilbo, would be wrong. it would probably end up as a sort of freakish "frobo" (mix of frodo and bilbo.)thing... i for once would have trouble separasting the two different characters, if played by the same actor. but don't get me wrong, i don't have anything against the actor. i think he did a good job in the three movies. but he's a definetly a no-no for the hobbit...

I did my own little opening/ending for the Hobbit storyline in another thread and I'll repost it here so all of you can see it. The older Bilbo would be Ian Holm, Gandalf would be Ian McKellen, and the other four Hobbits would be played by Lija, Dom, Bill, and Sean.

[We see Bilbo sitting in his room in Rivendell looking back through his book. Frodo is sitting in the corner reading while Merry and Pippin play a game of chess in another corner and Sam packs. Bilbo sighs and Frodo looks up and asks him what is wrong. Biblo just smiles and gestures towards the book he holds in his hand.]

Bilbo: "Ah Frodo my lad. I was just thinking of my adventure I had so many years ago. If I had the choice to go on another one...I would do it in an instant. I have no regrets about that journey. Shall I tell it to you my lad one last time before you leave tomorrow?"

Frodo: "Yes...I should like it if you would, dear Uncle."

[Frodo closes his book and comes to sit at Bilbo's feet, just like he did as a child. Sam notices the beginnings of a story and so leaves his packing and comes to sit next to Frodo. Frodo nods for Bilbo to begin. Bilbo opens his book and begins to read with a small smile on his weatherd face.]

Bilbo: "There and Back Again; A Hobbits Tale by Bilbo Baggins...."

That's how it starts. Then while he's reading, Merry, Pippin, and Gandalf (who happened by in the nick of time) join them for the reading. Then The Hobbit actually begins and we get to journey through Middle Earth again.

When The Hobbit ends, we see Frodo in Bag End reading the end of the book. Frodo sighs and smiles as he stands and glances out the window. He looks back at the book then he heads to the study, sits down, opens the book, takes his pen, and begins to write where Bilbo left off.

We know he writes LotR. That's just my idea of how PJ could start and end it.

Hard to say about Ian Holm, he is getting up there. They should be getting somebody who sort of looks like Ian, at a younger age. Elijah was great as Frodo, but he was great as FRODO. Bilbo and Frodo are two different hobbits. I believe there must be a difference. I'd be glad if Ian McKellen came back for Gandalf....as for Gloin, I heard John Rhys-Davies said "No way, not for all the gold in Middle-earth!" lol then again, people can change their minds. Since these are different characters (other than Gandalf) I think they need to have different people. As for Smaug, I wouldn't mind Christopher Lee doing the voice. Smaug always struck me as having a deep sonorous voice like Saruman's...eh maybe they went to the "School for Scary Voices" lol. You know who I wouldn't mind seeing in it playing...Bard? I think his name was. Is Johnny Depp, I think he would have made a good Aragorn too ^.^ Then again, I am an odd one. Well, thats my two lembas worth...

That really would be neat! You're right though- people would think of him as Frodo. He's pretty much typecast now. :) He has a good spirit about that, though.
