What do you think is the purpose in having Haldir and a band of Elves fight and die in The Two Towers?
I mean to keep Arwen frsh in the plot?
To get to use more than one tye of 'Massive' model?
I really do not get it..............
What do you think?

Hmmm... It does seem rather like a pointless change, doesn't it?
Maybe to somehow glorify the elves, make it look less like they were hiding through the whole thing. Maybe because elves look rather cool fighting. Their death could be a sentimental oppurtunity, you know? Sacrificing themselves and all that.
In any case I don't like it.

Well, that's true...
Haldir and his elves fighting and dying would be seen as honorable.

i think it has to do with the fact that the elves look pretty cool on film actaully;) lol
they are the creatures that are generally (note i said "generally"...please dont everyone argue the point:rolleyes: lol ) the most popular so i guess it seemed a good way to show then off a bit more....plus the fact that in a battle scene, at night, it can be hard to tell the protagonists apart....but the elves should be easy to spot....
im awaiting the scene with interest....;)

A very good point.
I'm looking forward to it also. :)

the reason must be the elf-mania... There are most people's favourites and the more of them there are in the movie, the more people we have in the theatres...
And I can't understand it either, as IMO it doesn't have any other sense and doesn't look logical at all

I like Elves, and I think it will be a very emotional scene, but I don't think it really needed to be added.

I like the elves a lot and am awaiting the scene with growing intersts. although I don't think that they needed to be added in just to satify us elf loving people.

I believe the scene, although not entirely neccessary to the plot, has been added to illustrate how the elves want to vanquish evil from Middle Earth as well, and how they are will to fight the enemy alongside their allies and die for their homeland.
I think P.J. is doing this so it doesn't look as if the elves are simply leaving M.E. for the Grey Havens and hiding in seclusion.
Peter probably wanted to show a duality of sorts when the Elves and Men forge a second alliance against evil.

That's what bothers me...hello...they even narrated the prologue as "A last alliance of Men, and Elves..." etc. Hello. The Elves should be busy protecting their own border instead of the Men's! After all, who's gonna be left to protect Lorien from the Orc invasions?

I thought that once the ring was destory Lorien would start to fade.

Dunno, maybe PJ wants people to know that Elves are part of Middle earth and they care about their lands...I know it's not exactly true. But not everyone knows about the actual situation the elves are in, cuz they haven't read the book!pfbbt
so PJ might want to make the impressiong of "Middle-eath's final defense" or something like that to common audience...
Just my opinion...I don't think PJ will just let elves sit there...:naughty:

It'll probably make for a good movie sequence but whether or not The Two Towers needs it is another question.

it's kinda like the beginning sequence of the film, when everyone is fighting against evil together....maybe they're trying to show that things haven't change that much over thousands of years....

well, whatever the reason may be I wish he hadn't! pfbbt Although since reading this I get an idea how he's going to make Helms deep last for 45mins. (it didn't even take that long to read!) :(

This is a part of my theory. Also to keep elves a bit more in the picture as it seems (for some bizare reason) that everyone loves elves. (Poor diluded souls...). Also, at this point, it's the only way to get Anduril into Aragorn's hands since he didn't pick it up at Rivendel. PJ has established Arwen and placed more emphasis on her relationship with Aragorn than in the books, so he has to put her in the second movie to keep that plot line alive.
Besides, I'd pay to see elves slaughtered enmasse anyday....

This may be, in fact, the most blasphemous thing that Jackson has done. The Battle of Helm's Deep was the first victory of Men. The Rohirrim had been repressed and deceived by Saruman and to have the Elves present in a fight which really isn't theirs gets to me. It robs us of seeing some of the Valor that was shown by Men during that conflict. That's my beef with it.

If it's a really good scene I will think "wow I'm glad he did that"
But if it just kinda takes away from the rest of the battle I'll be like "K whatever"
So I guess what I'm saying is we'll have to just wait and see!!!!!

I don't care about it too much. There's a certian point at which I think we just have to say "If you want the story Tolkien wrote exactly as he wanted it, then read the book. " I honestly don't think Jackson has any obligation to stay completely true to the books. I actually think it's a blessing that he's stayed as true as he has! (A *lot* of movie adaptations that come out of Hollywood aren't nearly as true to their book counterparts as LotR is).
So if he wants to put elves in Helm's Deep, fine by me. It may not stay completely true to Tolkien's intent, but if it turns out to be a good sequence then I'm all for it! (my atidute with Arwen's Flight to the Ford as well - and I thought that was pretty dang cool)
BTW, I've read that they decided to tone down Arwen's role so she's not as much of a "warrior princess" at Helm's Deep.

Well its a good point that Arwen may be bringing Narsil/Anduril to Aragorn but i have been reliably informed that the sword wont appear until RotK. I think the Uruk-Hai should put Haldirs head on a pike and parade it around :P

Hoom! The Elves ought to stay in their woods! After all, they don't have a beef with Saruman.
And who the heck is going to protect Lorien? (Well, I mean, besides Celeborn and Galandriel...but you do need a certain amount of archers.)

The film isn't just for the people who have read and love the books, its for movie goers aswell. PJ had to change a few things in the film to make sure things still made sense to non-Tolkien fans, without straying too much from the story, which i think he has doen a pretty good job:thumbs: maybe Helms Deep isn't the best place for the Elves to be in but if having Elves there encourages people to watch it, then maybe that will encouage more people to read the books and then they can get a full understanding of the ways of the elves and middle earth at that time.
