Hey there! I thought I'd start a thread talking about scary movies. You know the kind I mean. The ones where you are just SO scared stiff, you feel like you are either going to scream or pee your pants.
For example, I saw "Signs" a few weeks ago, and it was so incredable! :o It was right up there with one of the scariest movies I've ever seen! I thought that the most frightening part was when they realized they did not bar the attic door down. My friend actually curled into the fetal position in her seat, started rocking and muttering: "Why am I here? Why am I here? Oh my God! Why am I here?" The girl is a nutcase, but MAN! I wanted to do the same thing!
So, here's the place to talk about any movie that you find scary.

I loved that film!!! It was scary as hell!
Especially the scene in the beginning when the alien is seen for a brief second on the rooftop, and seeing its reflection against the television screen towards the end.
Those images seriously freaked me out! :elfeek:
Sindarin

The Sixth Sense was also a very frightening film.
Even though Unbreakable wasn't a scary film, it was suspenseful at times.
I can't wait to see what M.Night Shamaylan does next! :)

Loved the 6th sense.....very much like "the Others"....you didnt see much, but that of course made it worse, cos you imagined it....and your imagination is far, far worse than anything a director can come up with.
and i loved the way they used the gore effects....very sparingly so that they didnt lose thier shock effect:thumbs:

The Others was a fine suspense film. I recently purchased it on DVD.
Although I think it's kind of slow in some aspects, (not to mention those annoying caretakers), it is good overall.
The ending was a sure pay off!

Okay then....
Well, we've been wanting to see Signs, and The Others was great!
I was scared to death as a kid whn I saw The Excorsist, and all the Damien movies were just as chilling!
Me? I'm a Clive barker fan!! Absolutly LOVE Hell Raiser and Night Breed! I even have a Pin-Head mask which usually wins me Scariest costume on Halloween and scares the little trick or treaters half to death!lol
Muahahaha :flamer:

The scariest movie I have ever seen was Jeepers Creepers.... ARGH! I'm gettin chills just thinking about it.
*hears Jeepers, Creepers! Where'd ya get those peepers* ARGH! :elfeek: :o
Also, I think Pinnochio's Revenge is frightening, and Joy Ride is sorta scary... but not too much.

I'm not particularly a fan of "slasher" films.
I enjoy more of the suspense/thriller-type of horror movies.
Sindarin
August 26th,2002, 05:00 AM
Check out the films "Frailty", and "The Gift".
They aren't really horror films as such, but they were suspenseful at times.
Catz
August 26th,2002, 05:52 AM
mmmm The Gift was a great movie....Cate is such a versatile actress....yeah Sindarin, i have to say im not keen on slasher pics either.....gore is a bore.....i like not knowing whats lurking around the corner:naughty:

Stuff where there's an evil prescense seems to scare me more than the slashers, which is prob. why I don't watch them as much... There are some scary ones out there. The ones like that that I've seen more than 5 times is Rose Red (not very good), The Haunting and What Lies Beneath. Personally, the last one was less scary, and more strange.
Sindarin
August 26th,2002, 02:47 PM
Yeah, some directors attempt to make films that are scary, but miss the point entirely.
I couldn't even sit through those movies for more than an hour.
You are right about the concept that the idea of an evil presence lurking, is far more frightening on-screen, rather than seeing actual violence in the film.
"Interview with the Vampire" was keen on this attribute...to an extent anyway.
What the film world needs more of these days is psychological based horror movies.
To have the idea that there just might be something hiding in the shadows, is scary enough. :elfeek:
Read the book "Grave's End" (a true ghost story) by Elaine Mercado, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

That's like with "Blair Witch Project." We never ever SEE the witch, but man! Just the thought of her gives me the chills! I can't watch that movie anymore. I live right near a forest. It's just too scary. . .
After the movie, some evil jerkwad was actually making stick people and hanging them in the forest. Nasty. . .

I loved Signs! It was suspenseful and well-done, a very far-fetched movie that was pulled off nicely. ;) It was also quite funny at points, and Joaquin........ *drools*
The scariest movie I've ever seen is still in my opinion "The Exorcist," it still terrifies me!!! :o And the book was nearly as bad.....
A! Elbereth
August 27th,2002, 02:34 AM
The Exorcist is very scary... and what's even more scary is that it could happen! :o :elfeek: (In my opinion at least) errrr.... gives me chills thinking about it.... "The power of Christ compels you!" lol

I happened to see Signs this weekend and thought it and very good movie. It was very suspenseful and well done. It had its moments but then it did have its low points. Over all i thought it a very good movie.

Back in the the early days of cable (remember ONTV and SelecTV anyone?)...my next-door neighbor and I went over to my other neighbor's house to watch the Exorcist....I don't think I've EVER been so affected by any other other movie....there are a lot of good, suspenseful movies out there, and I love a good thriller, but, that movie spooked us so badly we were afraid to go outside and walk the 100 yards back to her house (well. it WAS dark outside) and I had nightmares for weeks....we went to see it in the theater when it was re-released, and I really almost wish we hadn't, 'cause all that creepiness was still very much in effect...the only other movie I can think of that has affected me in a lasting way was "Angel Heart" with Mickey Rourke....."Serpent and the Rainbow" was another in that genre, and so was a movie with Michael Douglas called, I think, "The Believers, " ..all of them being movies that I THINK I want to watch again, but really know better.....

I saw The Exorcist too when it was rereleased. I saw it on Halloween night, if you can believe it, and the theatre was completely empty. My friend Trace and I felt totally okay about screaming when we saw that one.
Man, when the girl goes down the stairs backwards on all fours - freaky bizzare!

What is it with scary movies and cornfields? My friend Tracy saw "Children of the Corn" when she was little and it totally freaked her out. When we saw "Signs" and up on the screen came a cornfield, she leaned over to me and said: "Oh no! A cornfield! There's always evil lurking in a cornfield!"lol

I like scary movies. It's a safe fear, 'cause you know you're in a safe place and you can't get hurt. It's when the movie crosses the boundry, that I get really freaked.
For example, in Scream 2, when there was that murder in the movie theater, it was just a little to close for comfort as I was in a movie theater at the time. Movie itself was pretty dumb, but that scene freaked me out. I wan't even comfortable fleeing to the bathroom as someone was killed there too!

OMG! The movie "The Shining" was on tv last night. Completely freaked me out! But also got to remembering "The Simpson's Halloween Special" and got a good laugh at the same time.
HOMER: I'm thinking of writing a book, Marge. I think I'll call it: "No beer and no tv make Homer somethin' somethin'.

'Scream 2' was pretty scary in the theatre bit....but I thought I was funny when Courtney Cox got shot and she just kinda fell of the stage. wheeee
'The Gift' was ok but I really hated it when Bobby(was that his name? )set fire to his dad. That was horrible.
Does anyone know what rating 'Signs' is?
Nessa
September 7th,2002, 05:04 PM
Goldi: The Shining is great (the old one with Jack Nickleson). The book is even scarier..... no kidding. :o
(The Simpsons... *chuckle*)
Little Devil, the rating for Signs in America is PG-13, but I'm not entirely sure you're American.....................(?)
Little Devil
September 7th,2002, 05:08 PM

Goldilocks
September 7th,2002, 07:45 PM
How does that work, Little Devil? How old do you have to be to get into a Cert 12 film?

That's cool. The last ime I was in the UK,. I didn't even consider that the rating system was different. So, have you seen Signs yet, Little Devil?
TheRingBearer
September 8th,2002, 09:16 PM
Signs isn't actually out over here yet. I don't know if you're aware of it but we in Britain get most movies a few days to a month or two after it's American release :(
Goldilocks
September 9th,2002, 04:28 AM
Yeah, vaguely remember that. Brit movies you usally get well in advance. Here, they're hard to come by and only shown in select theatres. I have to drive all the way out to Toronto to see one.
Make sure you go and see it when it comes out! I'd see it again, but frankly, I'm too scared.

Here in Brazil, "Signs" will only be released at the movies next friday. I'm sure it will scare my sorry soul back to yesterday (because I'm the easiest guy to be scared), but I have to watch it.

Believe it or not, I actually first saw The Sixth Sense by myself. My parents went to see Blair Witch, and I totally didn't want to see it again, as it gave me nightmares for a month, so decided to see Sixth Sense instead. Those ghosts freaked me out not to be believed! I must've jumped a foot off my seat!
:othis is pretty much what I looked like.

theres not much point watching a scary movie if you have to make yourself believe that the rats (sorry, were they children) running around are scary.
The Others was alot better because there was the premise that there was something out there and you believed it, although you didn't see it.
And the bit with Bilbo at Rivendell made me jump a mile out of my seat!!:o
Goldilocks
September 10th,2002, 01:59 AM
OMG! Bilbo! I had read the book before, but I totally didn't see that coming. And after he changed back, and Frodo put his hand on his shoulder, I kept expection Bilbo to change back. Freak me right out!

Sorry but I really hated the sixth sese it ranked just down there with titanic (ok maybe not that that boring) for me not scary at all:angry: more boring:snooze: The others on the other hand was better it was a movie that had more of a plot than th sixth sense It was freaky it took me a while to realize that they were the dad ones becase of the complete shock I was in I was like No Way!:o

I LOVE the Shinning eppisode of The Simpsons! I also like the Boogy Man one. Have you seen it? It's not a Halloween one, I think it's the one where Marge gets addicted to gambling. It's hillarious!

Simpsons are great. I think the first season ones are kinda stupid, though. The art isn't nearly half as good. After that, however, the series rocks! Even my dad watches it, and he hates cartoons.

I like The Others as well, but IMHO tis not the scariest of all time.
Clive Barker's HellRaiser series, especially the first one would have to rank amongst the top along with The Excorsist for top billing.
But! I would put it up there in say the top 20! lol

September 18th,2002, 01:32 AM
I saw IT when i was younger, and remember being really scared right until the end, which, as with all Stephen Kings, was a major let down.
And i think the reason i was really scared was because clowns have always freaked me out since i was tiny - i got a clown doll for my birthday one year, and it stayed one night in view in my room(which was a very fretful night for me) and then it accidently got lost somewhere! oops!!;)
