Is there an Elvish dictionary?

"The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth" by Ruth S. Noel.

A complete guide to all fourteen of the languages Tolkien invented.

This is the book I use. :read:

It contains a dictionary of all non-English words, an English/Elvish glossary, rules of grammar and pronunciation; translations, how to write Elvish and other alphabets and runes.

Hi guys! I finally found this forum! You will be happy to know that I have been studding both Quenya and Sinarin for a whole year now, so I will probibly be able to answer a lot of your questions (at least I hope I can!). Elvish is one of my favorite parts of LOTR and I am glad this forum is here now. I don't know anyone who I can talk Elvish with!

By the way, Elf angel, I answered your question in your Elvish Language thread in the Prancing Pony.

As for the book that Sindarin suggested: Get it!!! I have this book and it has helped me a lot! I got mine at Barns and Noble Book Stores.

The only problem with the book that I found is that the dictionary is not compleat. So I have solved the problem for me by making my own Sindarin and Quenya Word List compiled from many different sources, some from the NET, and some from other books. If anyone would like a copy you can send me self addressed stamped envelope and I can send one out to you (of course, I must restict this offer to the USA only, sorry!) The list that I compiled is a very nice companion to the book.

I would love to know if there are any other Elvish "scholars" here besides me. Show yourselves guys!

I will check back here as often as I can, until then, Namįriė, mellano (farewell, my friends).

Elf Angel, Here is the phrase you posted at the top of this thread translated into Quenya:

"Get out of my room!" is...

"Celeth o anim sammath!"

It literaly translates: "Go out of my chambers".

Here is how you pronounce the words:

Celeth [KEL-eth]

o [oh]

anim [AH-neem]

sammath [SAM-math] (pronounce both 'm's, like in roommate.)

Update on the Elvish word list:

For those of you who are sending, or going to send me a SASE for the Elvish word list that I compiled from several different sources, I have an update. I am in the prossess of updating my list right now, adding a lot more words to it that I have been collecting up from all over for the last year. I would love to be able to send you this new, updated list, however, it is going to be much larger than the old one, so it will cost more to send.

The old list has approx. 1,000 words in both Quenya and Sindarin. I am adding up to 400 new words to it. The old list is 6 pages, but the new one will be anywhere from 8 to10 pages. Six pages is just under the mark where it gets to be too heavy for standard letter shipping (one 36¢ stamp).

So if you want the updated list I would have to send it in a larger envelope, which will cost about $1.00 so send. So if you send me a dollar I will send you the new, updated list, pluss a Tengwar Summery sheet, and a pronuciation guide. The Tengwar Summery sheet has all the Elvish letters on it, pluss the Cirth letters (the kind the Dwarves used). It also has the Elvish number characters, something the books don't have! (I found this on a web site quite a while ago. I would just give you the link to it, but I forgot where I found it!!) The pronunciation guide is complete, and shows you how to pronounce all of the elvish letters. (This guide is more complete than the one published in the LotR or the Silmarillion.)

So, if you want the old list with approx. 1,000 words, send me a LSASE. That's all.

If you want the new list with over 400 added words, pluss the Tengwar Summery sheet and the pronunciation guide, send me $1.00, and your address. (The lists are free, I just need the dollar for shipping) :p

I will send the list out to you as soon as I recive your request!

That's all. I hope that's not too inconvenient for some of you.

Once again, I can only ship in the USA. Sorry!

Oh yeah! Include your screen name with you order so I know who you are! ;)

lasta lalaithamin.

lasta lalaithamin doesn't that mean listen to my laughter. I think  well lasta is definately listen I know that much. I think!

Wilwarin
September 3rd,2002, 05:29 PM
Yes, "lasto" is listen, and "lalaith" is laughter. I'll have to look up the rest. I'll get back to you in a little while.

Wilwarin
September 3rd,2002, 06:05 PM
OK, here is what I came up with:

"dolle" could be the Qunya word for "hidden", but i'm not sure on that.

"na" is the Quenya word for "is", and "lost" means "empty".

"helkaer" would be something like "icy sea", "cold sea", or "frozen sea" (go figure!)

"lasta" is "listen" and "lalaith" is "laughter" like I already said. I'm not sure exactly what the entire thing means, it very well could mean "listen to my laughter", but I am not compleatly sure.

So let's see... how would that go?...

"Hidden is empty, icy sea, listen to my laughter". Hmm... Me thinks your brother was just trying to impress you with his "knowlege" of Elvish! :p (but I could be wrong. My Elvish dictionary is undergoing a compeat overhaul right now, so it is hard for me to find all the words I need!)

I'll try again after I get it all updated and straightened out.

Tar-Ancalimė that sounds like a lot of work but I'm sure someone can help Wilwarin is really good at this but might not have time whilst translating everyones names and stuff! but you never know  try repeating it after them! might help!

Tar-Ancalimė

See, I can say what they say (except for "the road is too dangerous"! I CANNOT understand what he says there!!) but I can't remember it except for a few seconds. If I had it written down it would help a lot! but I don't want to write it incorrectly.

Wilwarin
September 3rd,2002, 10:11 PM
Never fear! I just happen to already have it written down! :p

OK, this is the scene of Arwen and Aragorn in Rivendel:

Arwen: A si i - dhśath ś - orthor, Aragorn. ś or le a ś or nin."
(The shadow does not hold sway yet, not over you and ot over me.)

Later, on the bridge:

Arwen: Renech i lui erui govannem?
(Do you remember when we first met?)

Aragorn: Nauthannen i ned ol reniannen.
(I thought I had strayed into a dream)

Arwen: Gwenwin in enninath... u-arnech in naeth i si celich.
(Long years have passed... you do not have the cares you carry now)

Renech i beth i pennen?
(Do you remember what I told you?)

Tar-Ancalimė
September 3rd,2002, 10:15 PM
WOW!!!
Thanksxamillion!

And, if you have this too, what about the scene that starts, "Frodo! I'm Arwen, I've come to help you"
and then Aragorn says, "Stay with the hobbits"?

Wilwarin
September 3rd,2002, 10:22 PM
Never fear! I just happen to already written down! :p

This is the scene where Arwen comes to help Frodo:

Aragorn: Dartho guin berian. Rych le ad tolthathon.
(Stay with the Hobbits. I will send horses for you)

Arwen: Hon mabathon. Rochon ellint im.
(I'll take him. I am, the faster rider)

Frodo fir. A athridan i hir, tur gwaith nin beriatha hon.
(Frodo is dying. If I can get across the river, the power of my people will protect him)

Then Arwen commanding the River to flood:

Arwen: Nino Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer.
(Waters of the Misty Mountains, listen to the great word)

Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer!
(Flow waters of Loudwater against the Ringwraiths!)

(She repeats this twice in the movie)

Wilwarin
September 3rd,2002, 10:24 PM
I'll have to get back to you about the part where Arwen is talking to Frodo. I don't have that part written down yet.

Yes, actually I have been studding Elvish for over a year now. As for an easy way to learn it? Well... you can try something I did. If you have the After Dark screen saver on your computer, go to the one called "Who Says?" It is one where you can put your own quotes on it. I just typed a bunch of Elvish words and phrases on mine, then when ever my screen saver came on I was learning Elvish!

Wilwarin
September 4th,2002, 09:00 PM
Alright, here's the rest of those lines from the movie

When Arwen comes to help Frodo and she is all shiny and glowy:

Arwen: Frodo, Im Arwen, telien lethai...
(Frodo, I am Arwen, I've come to help you)

Lasto beth nin, tolo ton en galad.
(Hear my voice, come back to the light)

Here is the part where Aragorn says "The road is too danerous". It took me so long to fugure out the exact words he was saying! He was talking so fast! at first I thought he said "an i luin men" but that would mean "the road is blue"! lol So I kept backing up the scene and listening to it over and over and over... you get the idea, you've probibly done the same ;) Anyway, this is what I finally heard!

"An delui men" [on DEL-oo-ee men] It means literaly "the road is horrible" I'm sure they just translated it the way it is in the movie for our better understanding.

There, hope that helps

I thought it would be fun to post the rest of the Elvish lines spoken in the film, even the minor ones. So here goes...

Elrond's battle cry:

Have you ever wondered what Elrond says at the begining douring the battle? You knew he was yelling something, and since you couldn't understand him you probibly figured it was in Elvish. Well, you were right, here is the translation.

Elrond: Tangodo haid! Hado i philinn!
(Hold [your] positions! Fire the arrows!)

Then there's that one part just before the Flight to the Ford, when Arwen and Aragorn are deciding who should take Frodo. After she finally convinces him that she should do it, he says something in Elvish that sounds like he is giving in to her wish, but it doesn't give a caption for it. This is what he said:

Aragorn: Be iest līn.
(According to your wish)

And then there's that part that I'm sure we all thought was just really freaky! When we see Elronds face for the first time :o He is in this half dream of Frodo's and he is speaking in Elvish. this is what he said:

Elrond: Frodo, lasto beth nīn, tolo dan na ngalad.
(Frodo, hear my voice, come back to the light)

Aragorn at the Council of Elrond, telling Legolas to sit down:

Aragorn: Havo dad, Legolas.

Aragorn to Haldir in Lórien: Haldir o Lórien. Henio, anķron, boe ammen i dulu līn. Boe ammen veriad līn.
(Basicly: Haldir from Lórien. Please understand, we need your protection)

Wilwarin
September 7th,2002, 04:26 AM
And you thought that was all???

The spell that Gandalf says on Caradhras: Losto Caradhras, sedho, hodo, nuitho i 'ruith.
(Sleep Caradhras, be still, lie still, hold [your] wrath)

Gandalf's Moria Gate spells:

The one where he yells it out the first time: Annon Edhellen edro hi ammen!
(Gate of the Elves open now for me!)

Then later when he is muttering in the back ground: Ando Eldarinwa a lasta quenttanya, fenda Casarinwa!
(Gate of Elves listen to my word, Threshold of the Dwarves)

( the first one was in Sindarin and the second was in Quenya) :p

Then there's the spell that Saruman spoke to the mountain while standing on the top of Orthanc: Cuiva nwalca Carnirassė! Nai yarvaxėa rasselya taltuva ńotto-carinnar!
(Wake up cruel Redhorn! May your blood-stained horn fall upon the enemy-heads)

There, I think that's all... if there's more that I am forgetting, just tell me and I'll see if I can figure it out too.

Nessa

Where!? where can I learn Elvish, I want to learn it SO bad!! And if I can learn it I want it to be the language used in the movie, PLEASE!!! Please, please, please! help me learn elvish!! (I mean like the whole language, not just a few nouns and verbs, maybe even become fluent in it):whoohoo: :whoohoo:
Is there like a book you can get or something...

Wilwarin
September 7th,2002, 06:36 PM
No, unfortunately there is no one book that I know of that has the complete Elvish language in it, or one that teaches you how to speak it fluently. The book, "The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth" by Ruth S. Noel is a pretty good place to start though. But I must say that the book is very incomplete! It contains less than half of the known Elvish words. Pluss it has no phrases that can do anyone any good, only phrases taken from the books. It does give give a pretty good review of the gramer and sentance structure though. I would suggest starting with that book, it will keep you busy for a while. Then if you go to the internet and type in key word "Elvish" you'll find a whole lot to work with. There are over 115,000 sites that have some kind of Elvish theme to them out there!

Just to make it easyer when you are trying to learn the language... The one they speak in the movie is Sindarin. The other is Quenya. Quenya is like the Elvish "Latin" and was not spoken by the Elves in everyday life. Sindarin is the common speach of the Elves, and , in my opinion, a lot easyer to pronounce! The only Quenya spoken in the movie is Galadriel's "Namįriė" [farewall] and Saruman's chant up on the top of Orthannc (see above post).

If you' really, really want to learn Elvish that bad, I would go to Elvish.org. there are some real Elvish scholors there who really know what they are talking about. (I'm affraid I am just a hopeless wanabe. No matter what anyone here may tell you! But I'm getting there)

I hope that helps. Of course, you could always just hang around here for a while. You're bound to learn something!

No, silly, they speak Sindarin in the movie! :p

Only Saruman speaks Quenya when he his commanding Caradhras to fall on the Fellowship.

Also, all the place names in ME are Sindarin.

I'm using sites people have mentioned. and the stuff in the books (the confusing stuff at the back.) I can pronouce things, just about, if I'm shown the words. I haven't learned enough to make up phrases but I have a list of words and phrases that I've gathered.

although I keep confusing the two and its getting annoying. any tips wil?

Actually i was answering Arwen's question on which one of the elves languages that i'm (really) trying to learn..not the movie.
But since you say it's Sindarin (in the movie)..cool.

Ahh! But remember, in addition to Saruman's "curse" to bring destruction to Caradhras, Elrond's battle cry in the beginning of the movie is Quenya, and of course, Galadriel's farewell to Frodo. ;)

Quenya was, in the 3rd age, still known by most Elves but not spoken as a mother-tongue -- it was used mainly for ceremony or for lore and song.........(I swear I have read Appendix E so many times it's ridiculous, lol...).

Eowyn
September 17th,2002, 11:17 PM
you seem to be able to quote it!

you haven't read it too much until you can say a quote and what page its on! if you can say which line STOP READING IT NOW!

Isiltįri
September 17th,2002, 11:26 PM
If I were able to quote the page it is on, I would probably start worrying about myself lol.........

Can anyone think of another battle cry, or should we move on to other translations?

Also....what would you guys think if we had separate threads for Quenya and Sindarin translations? Might keep the confusion down to the minimum, especially since a lot of beginners have trouble distinguishing the two languages and end up mixing/matching......

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!
YOURE A GENIUS!
I was just about to start going crazy cause as if it wasnt enough to invent ONE crazily complete in-depth language, he goes and invents like TEN!!!!!!!!!

(ok minor exaggeration but you get the point)
(so i take it no one has a battle cry. s'ok)

Lasto beth nin, tolo ton en galad.
(Hear my voice, come back to the light)

I believe this should read: _Lasto beth nīn, tolo dan na ngalad_

"An delui men" [on DEL-oo-ee men] It means literaly "the road is horrible" .

I think this is supposed to be _Andelu i ven_

Yes, you are quite right, Lemnas. These are old attempts at figuring out what the Elvish in FotR was. It was before the DVD and the only way we could catch the words was go to the theater many times over. But we didn't have any pause or rewind buttons, so it was pretty hard to hear it all acurately (especially when it is Vigo talking!). Since then of course we know what they are really saying. But thank you for pointing out the errors anyway! It shows that you know something about Elvish! And yes, I too knew that the Elrond line was Sindarin. Someone said it was Quenya but I never took the time to correct he or she (I can't remember who it was).

Oh, and "Pedon i Hedhellem" litteraly means "I speak the Elvish Tongue".

Lemnas
February 15th,2003, 10:32 PM
>>Oh, and "Pedon i Hedhellem" litteraly means "I speak the Elvish Tongue".<<

How do you suppose? TO begin, ped- is an i-stem so we should see _pedin_ "i speak". I am not sure what Hedhellem is, the only thing similar that we have is Edhellen "elvish" which is an adjective... we also need the word "tongue" in here somewehere. If you were to say this correctly I think it should be _Pedin i lem edhellen_?

Wilwarin
February 16th,2003, 10:43 PM
Well, you got me there, Lemnas. I must admit that this is not my phrase, I got it from some where else a long time ago......not quite sure where though.......obviously who ever originally translated it didn't know what they were talking about. But thank you for pointing that out!

Does anyone know how to say just "please" and "excuse me" in Sindarin? Can't seem to find those phrases anywhere.

Thanks is Hannaid (I think)

Wilwarin
April 24th,2003, 10:22 PM
Those are two phrases that I have never been able to find either! I sure will let everyone know when I do though! (if anyone else knows what they are, please, let us know!)

Oh, and, actually, "thanks" would be "hennaid", 'a' turns to 'e' for the plural in non-final syllables. Or you could say "hannad le" which is "thank you".

Where did you learn that "farewell" is "nemardier"? And which language is it suposed to be? In Sindarin "farewell" is "Navaer", and in Qunya it's "Namįriė". Just wondering.

No I don't, but if you visit http://babel.edu/yamada/guides/tolkien.html. You will see all sorts of fonts for the elvish language and you will be able to down load them if you have a Mac.

Yes, "Welcome friends"

Do you know the word for 'thanks'

"Thanks" would be "hennaid"

"Thank you" would be "hannad le"

Ummm, this fellow LOTR fan I know is thinking of a good elvish name/or words (ex.fang or fur ball in elvish) to name her kittern (its a girl). Have any suggestions? ;)

Wilwarin
November 1st,2003, 11:51 PM
Well let's see....

I can't find a Sindarin word for "fang" as such, but "tooth" is "nźl", so how about a feminine name that means "tooth" or "teeth"?: Nźlien [NEL-ee-en] "tooth", Nīlien [NEE-lee-en] "teeth"

Also "furry" (as I can't translate "fur ball"): Helethen [HEL-eth-en]

I could make up other names if I knew more about the kitty. What color is she? What is her personality? Does she have any distinguishing features? Or will the names above work out ok?

Anunil
November 2nd,2003, 12:39 AM
I'll ask her more about her cat's personality, but this is totally great right now! Thank you so much! Your skills r incredible! ;)

Anunil: if you'd like any names in Quenya, I can help you out too. (Sorry - I hadn't checked this thread in a while and didn't realize you had posted!) I know it can be hard to find nice pet names in Elvish, as often they sound too harsh or too exotic to be practical for everyday use, so I could give your friend some more alternatives to choose from, if you'd like. Just let me know.
