OOC: The Epic of the Exiles

It seems to all appearances that there only active RPG here are of third-age variety. Surely there exist here some self-created elves who belong to the more ancient stories?

If anyone is interested, I will eventually change the tite of the thread. Please merely leave your suggestions and/or brief mention of the character you would like to play. Actual Silm characters are permissable, but I would much prefer this RPG to be primarily a self-created story.

I will describe my own character, Rananar, if the thread takes off.....

This sounds interesting. I happen to have a First Age Elf character that I created a while back but haven't had a chance to use yet. His name is Seron. What part of the first (or second) age would this take place in?

This will take place during the time of the exiles, before Nirnaeth, but after the battle of the sudden flame......flashbacks will probably become a part of the story depending on your characters origin.

tell me, is Seron of Eldar descent or no?

Yes, he's of the Teleri, originallly one of the Laiquendi. But I could make him from one of the other kindreds if need be. Since I haven't used him yet he's still kind of felxible. ;)

So if this story takes place between the fourth and fifth battles, then what is the story about? Or do you even have an idea yet?

excellent, Teleri is good unless the char choice restricts your movement, see mine is Fëanorean (what ELSE ;)) and the Teleri don't even set foot on ME during the conquering of Morgoth...

as for the plot, I hope that it develops itself.....what I meant essentially is that it will START before the fifth battle, but the battle and whatever happens after (IF anything happens) will become a part of the story....

my character will be dealing with the mixed feelings of the Fëanoreansas well as interactions with the other Noldor and the Laiquendi/Moriquendi, I call Maglor and Maedhros personification to myself as well as my own character.....but would love it if someone would take the others brothers (so long as they know enough about there personalities and dont hate them to a blind extremem :);))

I really hope there are other people that will become interested, I love Silm and the Fëanoreans (dinna need to say that did I?? lol) and have been aching to describe scenery!!

Well, if your character is going to be dealing with his fealings about the Laiquendi, then that could make for interesting interation between our two characters. (That is if I understood you correctly. Becuase it was slightly confusing ;) ) Or should I just change the ancestery of my character?

well most things I say ARE rather muddlesome lol

truthfully, I am not sure if you should change it because
1) the telerian/noldorian interaction would be very interesting
but 2) it would not be accurate, as the Teleri absained from ANY contact with the Noldor

unless we just want to go ahead and make an exception!!!

so I suppose the best thing to do, would be for you to play two characters, one in addition to S. who has more mobility in ME

I could play two characters (I usually like playing more than one in RPG's anyway) Could my second character be a man though? Would that work?

I also had the idea that if our two elf characters meet, maybe they don't know which kindred each is from until sometime later. They could become friends, then when they find out it could be very interesting. Just a thought.

It would be easier I think if you just went to The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/) and looked up "Dagor Bragolach," "Nirnaeth Arnoediad," the "Noldor," the "Teleri," "Fëanor," and "Beleriand." And also follow any links they give in each entry. After that, if you still have questions, then at least you'll know what we're talking about when we try to answer them. :)

the splitting "sundering") of branches of elven kinds can get reeeely messy when your reading the book, but for an RP all you really need to know arre the differnt characteristics of the diff kind of elves......then you can decide which you are most like/would like to have a charater(s) of!!!!

well, in short version, I am Rananar (not yet Mellondil, Friend of Maglor) a Noldorian elf of the Fëanorean household, through a relative of curufin's wife, and this is war era so it involves lots of personal insecurity and wavering between what is right and what is wrong (because of my enmeshment in the curse...having been actve at the Kinslaying you see)

And I play Seron, an Elf of the Teleri from Doriath (enemies of Fëanor and his kin). The Teleiri did not help in the wars, being quite content to live within the Girdle of Melian and not involving themselves with maters outside. I haven't actuallly thought up the history of my character yet since he was originally from somewhere else. I'll post my full character profile later.

lol, well like Wilwarin said, the best thing to do is check out hte cyclopedia, but to summarize it you can be a:

High Elf:

noldor (the elves who made the rings and the doors of moria, wisest and most hot headed, Galadriel was one)
teleri ("sea elves" don't do much but sing and sail!! but they're cool)
vanyar (holiest and highest but never do anything except once.....dont be one lol )

Middle Earthian elves (dark/grey elves)
Sindar (Leggy and co.........the wood elves)


thats all that really count, I left out he Nandor.....another branch...and all the lil branches I forgot!!! havna read Silm for a while!!

plus, some Noldor don't like each other, and the Teleri hate all Noldor because a Noldorian stole and destroyed thier greatest and most beautiful ships...the first shedding of elven blood was between these groups

Hey Nibiaraniel!! :smooch: About the elf thing, go to Encyclodpedia of Arda.com, and look up the list that Wil made for me (on the first page of this thread). That will tell you about the branches of elves and some important battles that happen in that time period. :thumbs:

well which branch of the teleri? THE teleri- Valinor , sea ones? or Laiquendi, or Sindar, or Falathrim (this last one I dont know much about exept that they become the grey havens elves)
I think female, since we have two possible male characters from Wil, and I am playing two standard-plot male characters (Maedhros and Maglor)
as for names, I like anything with the Sindarin "ros"=spray/foam in it!! like, Sulros is wind-spray ....what think you?

Except that Sulros is a very masculine name in Sindarin, and if you were to have a female character it might not fit. Once you get your character figured out, Telu, I'd be happy to help you with some name choices if you like, just PM me ideas for meanings. Or you could always just look through E of Arda and find some obscure name and use that. Your choice.

As for the Teleri branches, my character is going to be one of the Laiquendi. What details are you guys putting in your full character profiles....since each one changes a bit from RP to another RP.... :p

I think I would like to have a female Noldorin character, since you seem to have mostly males and I prefer females anyway. I'd also enjoy another of Feanor's sons, perhaps the youngest(I think Amrod and Amras are twins, so I wouldn't mind being either or both:)), because I have always liked them, if you don't have anyone else to play them.

If it's needed, I don't mind taking other Tolkien-made characters, either :)

Of course, you can add more or not even use all of these. It's completely up to you, this is just what I like to add. :)

Well, I'm going to be brave and post the first Character Profile... or two, actually :grin: I really love Fëanor's twin sons, Amrod and Amras, so I have decided I will play them, if no one minds ;).

Names: Amrod and Amras
Race: High Noldorin Elves, I think. I might be wrong. I don't get all the divisions. :) Please correct me if necessary :grin:
Gender: Males
Age: No idea. Since I don't actually know 1) When this RPG starts 2) The year the twins are born, I can't say :grin:
Height: Tall, I would guess. A little over 6 feet.
Place of Residence: With their father?
Family: Complicated. Sixth and seventh sons of Fëanor, first son of Finwë, the only by his first wife, Miriel, and I don't know who their mother is.
Weapons: Identical long bows, (obviously with quivers) and swords.
Special Abilities: Fighting, I guess.
Appearance: Tall, with dark brown hair and grey eyes. They are almost identical, and both are lean from fighting. And no elf is fat anyway. With the possible exception of Cirdan. Their mouths are shaped for smiling, which they do often. Strong, large hands and long arms.
Personality: This is where (in my mind) they differ. I always think of Amrod as being outgoing and loud, while Amras is quiet and reserved, but that's just me. I don't actually remember reading anything beyond oblique references in the Sil, so I'm not sure anyone actually knows what they're like, so I don't suppose it matters a great deal. Kind of like how I think of Elladan and Elrohir, but that's due to a series of fanfic I've read, not anything written by Tolkien. Still, I now find it hard to think or either set of twins being any other way.
History: Don't think they have a whole lot, other than taking the Oath of Fëanor with their brothers. As I said, I don't think they're mentioned much, so let's just say they fought quietly with thier heads down. If anyone knows more, please tell me and I will ammend this. Thank you.

Like I said, I don't actually know much about the twins, I've just always liked them. They aren't the most famous of Fëanor's children, and I assume that they just fight quietly with their brothers and don't do anything much. If I'm wrong, please correct me, like I said :grin:

Well, I don't know if this will help at all, but here's a quote from Amras' entry in the Complete Guide to Middle-earth by Robert Foster. Amrod's entry said basicly the same thing, only less.

Amras Noldorin Elf of the House of Fëanor, with his twin brother Amrod the youngest son of Fëanor. He swore the Oath of Fëanor and accompanied his father to Middle-earth, where he lived with Amrod in the plains and forests of East Beleriand. Although the twins kept to themselves during the Siege of Angband, in times of war they fought along side their brother Maethros. Amras and Amrod were slain during the attempt of the sons of Fëanor to recover the Silmaril by force from Elwing at the Havens of Sirion.

Amras and Amrod were alike in appearance and temperament. They seem to have been among the more mild-mannered of the sons of Fëanor, and were great hunters.

Their one overriding characteristic is family loyalty, thus any form of morality or resentment for what evil they have done is overborne by this. WHich brother do you associate them with the most (I think I am playing either Maedhros and Maglor or Maglor and Curufin, and just leave Maedhros in the backround) ?

I don't know who you should be, it depends on which kind of elf appeals to you most. We don't have that many females, though, so one of those would be nice. Of course, there's nothing that says you only have to have one character, either. I'm having three! (Eventually)

Location: Born in Doriath, but for several centuries he has taken to wandering the widerness.
Family: His sister Sírien. Both of his parents are dead.
Special Abilities: Extremely accurate with his bow (but what elf isn't?)
Appearance: Tall and slender (duh, he's an elf!). Long dark hair worn much like Legolas's. Dark grey eyes.
Personality: Quick-witted and wary of strangers. Does not hand over his trust easily. A worthy fighter. To those who know him he is soft spoken and gentle. Rarely angers, and when he does he keeps his cool.
Weapons: A small but strong bow which he crafted himself. He also carries two long-knives, but perfers to use his bow when able.
Other: Owns a horse called Rînlend, but rides him only when traveling long distances. Prefers to walk or run.
History: Oh well, I'll make it up as I get ideas. Sorry.

Race: Considers herself Noldorin but is really also half Vanyarin
Gender: Female (but I think you all knew that!)
Age: About 1593, so she's young
Height: 5'8" (short, basically)
Location: Wherever most of the Noldor live. In other words, I don't know.
Family: An older brother Túrindo (thanks Wil!), and their mother, (I have no name yet) (the Vanyarin). Their father is dead.
Special Abilities: She is good at fighting, but not excellent. Her best ability is healing, which she learned much of in Aman, from her mother, amonst others.
Appearance: Has the golden hair of her mother, unlike Túrindo, and sea-blue eyes. Her skin is fair, and she isn't tall but is slender.
Personality: A big one! She's quite loud and outspoken, because she fears that if she isn't, no one will notice her because she's so short. She hates being short, and reacts violently to anyone making snide comments about it. As such, she's often in trouble of one kind or another. But really, her loud facade is only to hide a sensitive, giving soul that she doesn't want anyone to find.
Weapons: Medium length bow, and a sword that looks too long for her and wins a lot of fights because of that.
Other: She doesn't have a horse, but would like one. She maintains she hasn't found the right one yet, but her brother thinks she's being stupid.
History: She was born in Aman before the Noldor were exiled, and followed her father into that exile. Her mother was kept in Aman by her parents, not allowed to follow her husband, and as he died in the exile, she has become very bitter and estranged herself from her parents. Mel and her brother, after losing their father, wandered the land for many years before finally settling with other Noldor.

But Mel, I was just curious how you think that 5' 8" is short? I'm 5' 8" and am usually the tallest in a group of women. And elves aren't that much taller than men, especially not female elves. I would think that 5' 6" is short. But anyway... I just thought I'd mention that, it doesn't really matter :p

Special Abilities: She is very fast and agile, even for an elf.
Appearance: silver-grey eyes, hair that falls just past her shoulders and is very dark brown. A vulnerable-looking face. She always wears black clothes, and she has a silver ring on the fifth finger of her left hand with a white gem..
Personality: shy. She rarely gives an opinion unless she is asked for it. She finds it hard to make friends and only trusts a handful of people.
History: She has been traveling Beleriand, mostly alone, alone for 200 years, but no one knows what happened to her before that.

One problem, Telu... your character's an elf, and Wil's is human. Actually, I think hers is the only human... someone needs to add another human to keep him company! I don't suppose he would live solely with elves and know only elves, even in the First Age.

I think someone definitely needs to start posting in the RPG, but do we actually know exactly when it's set? I know FoM posted something about it in the RPG, but it wasn't exactly very precise ;)

Well, if it's between the Fourth and Fifth battles...they are about 16 years appart aren't they? Dagor Bragollach being about 455 FA and Nirnaeth begining in 471. So it coulld start any time between those. The question still remains, which battle should we start closer to? If we want the Nirnaeth to be in the RP at all, then I suggest starting closer to that. But what does FoM think?

And I would be happy to start with the first post, as soon as I know the date when it takes place.

And Mel, definitely there would be other humans around. The First and Third houses live in Dor-Lómin after all, it's kind of like a city of men, but elves live there too. So he would know many of both kinds. But yeah, he needs woman—of course, who's to say he couldn't fall for an elf? It has happened before ;)

You see Telu, we originally planned it to take place about 5 years BEFORE Nirnaeth, so that would be about 11 years AFTER Dagor Bragollach. So yeah, it's all that way again. (don't worry about it, FoM ;) ) And yes, I think there was one mention of the Nirnaeth in Mel's last post. It just needs to be replaced with Dagor Bragollach and we'll all be back to normal.

I just did a little re-reading in the Silm… and now I am wondering: I know that only two years after the Bragollach (sp) Sauron comes to the “Isle of the Werewolves” (tol in Gaurhoth or something: too lazy to re re readlol) but how many years pass before the Beren Luthien deal? Is this after? It would probably be better that way, but I need a general consensus in case I do something with Celegorm and Curufin….I need to know whether or not they are in Nargothrond lol Amrod and Amras are easy, because they are just riders/hunters and are always moving…..where is it you have them again Mela? What are (if you have any yet! lol) your plans for them movement-wise?

OK, well, here's a little timeline I've put together, hopefully this will help clear some thngs up.

First Age year

455 — Dagor Bragollach
465 — Celegorm and Curufin Exiled
466 — Beren and Lúthien take the Silmaril from Morgoth. Our RP begins
467 — Recovery of the Silmaril
471 — Nirnaeth Arnoediad

So that's a very basic look at what's happening, if you want more details for each of those years, or the years between, I might be able to add stuff ;) So it looks like this RP will take place over a period of five years. I guess we'll do a lot of skipping forward.

Age: Born in the first winter in Middle Earth after the Noldor left Valinor. I presume that's not very old for elven standards. Can't be sure of course.
Race: Noldor, but not of particulary high blood.
Gender: Male
height: 6' 5"
Combat: He fights with a sword and a shield. As guard of Caranthir (the Dark) he is trained pretty well in combat, but he is better known for his courage and loyalty than for his skills in battle.
Family: No royalty among his ancestors, but his house is well known and respected amongst Feanorians. His father was a close friend of Feanor and died during the second battle of Beleriand, along side with his lord.
History: Caranthir looked after him after his father died. He became one of Caranthir's guards and most trusted friends.
Personality: He's a bit on the quiet side, but he can burst out in fury from time to time. He is some what suspicious of other people but once someone wins his trust he'll trust that person completely. He's very loyal towards his friends. Also, he is very proud of being a Feanorian and a friend of Caranthir, though he sometimes questions his lord's actions and rejects his cruelty. But he would never betray his lord, whatever the other elves may think!
Appearance: He's quite long, with dark hair reaching his shoulders. His fair grey eyes that mirror the shadow which has fallen upon the Noldor.
He mostly wears his guard uniform, with a mail coat and a beautiful helmet. When he's not dressed in this armour, he's clad in green.

Alright, this is getting a little confusing! I think we should all post exactly where our characters are. That way we can all know how far away everyone is in relation to each other. I'll go first.

Brand is in Dor-Lomin, which is in far northwest Beleriand. And Aerlinn is, of course, with him (just saving you a post there, Telu :) )

Seron is near the Little Gelion, which is fairly northeast Beleriand.

So that's where my characters are. Now everyone please post your character's locations, and try to be as precise as you can.

Mel, how can you and Acharne have trveled so far already? Brand and Acharne were just in the same location not too long ago, and Bran is still living in that same day. Anyways, it will take much longer than a few days to get from Dor-Lomin to the Little Gelion. I'll start moving Seron farther south, but I want to keep him in East Beleriand so he can meet Rananar.

I was talking with Evenstar today, and she said she'd like it if a few of us could have more characters. I think she feels that it would be nice to have someone else to talk with Mel and Acharne. I agree with her, since neither of us seem to have much purpose or direction at the moment. Any alternative ideas would be welcome, of course :grin:

We seem to have rather a lot of Noldorin at the moment, with all the brothers, and I was wondering if it would be fun to make a group of characters in Doriath, and then, somehow, have them meet the Noldorin.
