It was today, 31 years ago, that our beloved Professor Tolkien, creator of the world of Middle Earth, that world that has captured all of us,passed away!

I just wanted to say "Thank you", though words are so poor for all he has offered us...A world of dreams, a great literary work...magic!!

Hannon le, Professor! I know you're watching us...from the Halls of Mandos, perhaps, together with all the heroes you brought to life!! :rose: :ring:

Well i believe he does continue to live... in the hearts of everyone who have been influenced from his work, together with all the characters (I don't like the word hero... too demanding) he brought to life indeed.

I'd like to say thanks, because LotR has influenced like all my conscious life. It has brought me to understand and appreciate (even if not embrace) things that I normally wouldn't, as it doesn't demand to teach, it simply shows the ways. As Tolkien said, no allegory, but still applicability (:

He wasn't perfect... his writing wasn't perfect... his characters weren't perfect... and this is the charm that keeps us enchanted all these years. He wasn't a brilliant writer, maybe he even wasnt a good writer... but he was an enchanting storyteller... created the best book version of a storyteller, a job well forgotten these days... and thats why he lives... in it and in us. And may it continue to.

I like to think of his writing as too good, far above the norm of intellegence. I am continually blown away by the amount of detail. How he kept all of that straight in his mind as he was writing it is overwelming to me. But it all made sense and the pieces all fit. It keeps me coming back for more and more. I learn and understand new things with each reading. It may not be the conventional way of writing, but I think it was very clever.

Also, he definately was on a completely different plane of thought and imo brilliant in his creativity. That's why we go around quoting him with love in our hearts! :)

Be at peace, JRR Tolkien! :rose:

LotR and Tolkien definitely made me more sane and more content. I truly thank the Professor from the bottom of my heart, deeply for creating a story with such characters and such plot that is so emotional, so deep, so real. LotR will always be one of my favorite books and epics of all time and i truly thank Tolkien for being such a great inspiration, and for making up a world in which I have fallen in love with.

Thanks a lot, hannon le for bringing us to appreciate the power of what story-telling can do.

Well, it took me some time before I finally managed to read the books (only two years ago!). I still can remember being interested, and having Tolkien on my wish list of books to read... and I'd heard fragments about LOTR and Tolkien's life. One of those things was that Tolkien was literally "living" in Middle-earth (in his thoughts). And I thought: "Well, that's endearing somehow. But to me, such a thing will never happen!"

Oh, how wrong I was!

From the first day I had begun to read the books I was swept away, totally absorbed. I literally vanished in Middle-earth, and didn't want the books to ever end... Now I think about Middle-earth every single day, have a pile of Tolkien-related books, and I even write fanfiction to put my thoughts into words. And there is a certain hunger to learn even more about Tolkien's complex world, his inventions of myth and languages, about Tolkien's writing processes, and much, much more.

Umm, I ramble on and on.... my intention was to say THANK YOU to the Professor for sharing his invented world with us, how it enriched my life, and how it even changed my look on certain aspects in real life. :)

Well, that was pathetic! But so true.
