Not likely, I know, since he died quite a while ago, but has anybody met Professor Tolkien? Or at least seen him? Or Christopher Tolkien?

Not me though i dearly would have liked to!
we're in different centuries though :p (practically) and also different continents ;) but yeah it would've been really cool to meet him.
Chris Tolkien, on the other hand, there is still possibility of meeting him... but i get the feeling he is not such a nice guy for some reason... why do i have that feeling? hmm..
But cool question... but i think all of us are too young to have met Tolkien... he died in 1981... anyone lived in England at that time and read the books when it was first published?

but i think all of us are too young to have met Tolkien... he died in 1981... Didn't he die in 1973? I think it was a year before I was born. ;)
I'd love to have a chat with Christopher Tolkien, though. But I would guess he wouldn't like being asked too much. :p I once read that he didn't like all that fuss about the movies, for example, and that he has quite a strong opinion on things. I think I would back away from that man. ;)

Actually, there ARE a few of us here old enough to have met him, altho I certainly missed my chance. My brother was to have heard him lecture, but the Prof sadly passed away before that scheduled event.
(And 1973 is NOT another century, although it may seem that way lol lol- it's the year I graduated from high school!!)

It feels like another century sometimes! lol lol
Oh gosh, I bet your brother was disappointed. Is he as big a Tolkien fan as you? My brother is, he's the one who first gave me the Hobbit to read...in fact we were laughing last night about my calling him Gandalf when I was in high school. lol

I guess technically it IS another century, but not to me!! My bro actually got into LOTR because of me- I got him to read the books (which is the only thing he ever listened to me about.......he's older, and has always thought he knew better) He enjoyed the books, but I fear he never got into them like I did....I have not spoken to him much since the films came out, but I did hear that his daughter enjoys the books and movies, so at least she has the Tolkien bug. (We live in opposite parts of the country, and we have little in common- no animosity, just nothing to talk about)

Thanks, but guess what..... I AM OLD!!! (sorry- the birthday is around the corner, and while not a biggie, it's still a number that I never thought of when I was young...er) lol

awww IDM, your way too young to be called old. (Although we may feel it at times!) lol Now old is my 84 year old father in law. lol I wonder if he's ever read Tolkien? That man really likes to read history. I wonder if he'd get into historical fantasy. hmmm Maybe that's an idea for a Christmas gift. :mmmm:

There's a thought. Tho my dad thinks we're all bonkers about LOTR (and he's a major history/entemology buff) We'll be celebrating my dad's 80th this year (at Thanksgiving....a real reason to give thanks, don't ya think?) and both my in-laws will hit 80 in the first quarter of 2005. What better reason for a party!!

Hi everyone, its been awhile.. (to busy with... you know busy with everything!)
I haven't met or seen him of course since I was born after he died.. BUT!
As the matter of fact, my grandfather has met him back in the 70's. My grandfather had a very good friend from Finland.. and they went to visit him (can't remember when.. but sometime during the 70's) Tolkien learned the finish' langauge at the age of 17 and one of his elven langauges is inspired Finish.
My grandfather's friend met him in London and became friends with him. Pretty cool, right?
My grandfather says that he has very fond memories of the dinner with his friend and Mr Tolkien..

-gasp- Rada! Oh my gosh, that is so FLIPPIN COOL! Now I can say that I'm have one of those "six degrees of separation" things with Professor Tolkien! (Does that make sense?) Except...well, do connections with forum buddies count?
I'm too young to have met him (obviously) but I did see the place where he and the rest of the Inklings used to hang out...I tried to take a picture, but the bus was moving and it turned out blurry. I nearly cried. :(

Hey...some of us were around for JRR (and today some of us feel like we were around for Homer) (and by Homer I'm assuming you DON'T mean Simpson) But sadly, in the 70's, I had neither the werewithal nor the inclination to travel to UK to meet the good prof. Silly silly me!!

I WISH I could have met Tolkien!!!!!!!!!!! (Too young, though... :( )
I did have the privilege of meeting a former student of his, once, in fact he was one of the ppl who introduced me to LotR (I was little & too stupid to apprecciate that i met someone who knew JRR though!!)
*sigh* What about grandkids though? I heard (on the EE) that one of Tolkien's (great?) grankids was an extra (an Ithilien ranger I think?)

Hey Leia  welcome to this forum~! =)
Meeting Tolkien would've been really cool indeed and meeting his former student is cool as well~
I think the Ithilien ranger who handed the weapons to everyone's name is called Royd Tolkien...i think... He was the only one in teh family to really support PJ's vision of LotR and went down to New Zealand just to visit PJ and crew but ended up being an extra. =)

Well that proves that at least one in the Tolkien family accept the movies.
I belive he was going to be a guest at the One Ring Celebration. Here´s a link:

Royd seems to be a real nice fellow, but I guess all great Grand-sons are.
Anyone has the LOTR Visual Companion books? In the third one it says that Christopher has approved it but he does not like it. How come he is so against the movies?

perhaps he thinks it's not what his father had in mind when the books are just reduced to film/movie elements... i'm not so sure but i know all of the sons aren't that for it... none have watched it (i believe).
Royd is very enthusiastic and supportive of the films (even played a soldier of Gondor in the Osgiliath scene as mentioned before) but Christopher not so much. :mmmm:

Tolkien had a daughter too didnt he? Is she still living by any chance?
I would love to meet Tolkien's grandkids & talk w/ them! That would be very cool  what lucky kids to have such an awsome family legacy! notworthy
But, in some ways I can see how they might not go in for the movies....I mean, it was their grandfather's masterpice, and perhaps they do think he wouldnt have approved of the changes made......

Royce Tolkein was in the battle of Osgiliath, passing out spears as they ready for the orc attack. He is JRR's great grandson.
