Fellow WarRingers, why do you suppose J.R.R. Tolkien's novels - The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion - has captured our imaginations, and inspired us and several others so much over the years?

Personally, Tolkien's books has provided me with a means of escape from this world, and into a forgotten realm by which to get lost in. :read:

I will totally agree with you on that one, it's written so in-depth that i can't help but get lost in it's intricacies (sp?).

i like the reality of them....i have always loved the ending of LOTR...things do not always turn out the way we think they should....i love the background...so detailed and intricate...and i love the errors and inconsistancies too lol it makes it human...
i love the optimism of them...that no matter how bad things get....you just need to keep your head down and keep going....i love the beauty of them...the language, the descriptions...the food for the imagination...the fact that they are something you can come back to all your life
i love them for a lot of reasons....mainly cos these books are my friends......always there for me, no matter how dark things get

Tis very strange, is it not? That all who read it fall into a longing for more. Its incredibly real, in the human sense. Tolkien has changed my perspective on so many things. To tell the truth, I have never enjoyed reading, that is, until I read this. Now its all I ever do.... I search for more things to read concerning Tolkien's works (and its getting on my famly's nerves, might I add lol)

Sindarin, I too get lost in the story. And sometimes while reading it, tis almost as if I were with Frodo and Sam in Shelob's lair, or walking in the darkness of Moria, or in Rivendell, listening to the elve's fair voices.
Whenever I fell troubled, I can think of LOTR, and the characters, and inside each detail, and inside the hearts of those in it, I can get an answer to all my questions. It certainly refreshes me more than anything else could.

.. been friends where one can turn in times of need. You can escape into the adventures of the characters. LOTR and for me esp. the Sil were just so brilliant, and so vivid that no matter how many times you read them, think about them or even dream about them, they still remain so bright and special. I think that the film was welcomed by so many fans of the books because we could see the characters as we had pictured them for so long, suddenly coming to life. Some of the portrayals .. esp. Aragorn, Legolas and Gandalf were just perfectly in synch with my imagination.. and most of the others were very special too.
Having managed to gather all the histories of Middle Earth too, it is sometimes confusing to see how much Tolkein altered and changed the story over a period of time, and it is astounding that there are relatively few inconsistencies given the complexity of the world which he designed and brought to life.

I'm another one who appreciates the depth and detail that he has put into his stories. Name another author who wrote more books just trying to include the entire history of a fictional world that is made believeable by this man's storytelling abilities. His books, in my opinion, have also spawned off hundereds of copies and rip offs that quite frankly don't even come close to beating his work.

I love reading the Lord of the rings book. It is written so well that when your reading it you almost feel like your in another world. I love getting lost in the books and thinking about all the different characters and playing the different scenes out in my head. it is all so enjoyable. it is an excape from the real world even if its just for an hour.

Lord of the Rings just takes you on the journey to Middle Earth where J.R.R Tolkien has managed to create that atmosphere and whisk you away. I love books which can take you away from the real world. :read:
I'm so glad I found some ppl who also love reading, most of my friends don't read and if they do it's stuff like Mary-Kate and Ashley!

I find it a bit sad when people insist on reading 'sweetvalley high' when there is something as enriching and stimulating as lotr to read! :read: :p

Well the above posts have summoned it up pretty well.

I personaly, have always enjoyed reading anything, from fiction to physics, and these were the first books that gave me everything, except the physics, all there in stunning detail. Each one is an ingenious work of art.

Exactly! It's amazing to find a novel that can appeal to so many people of all ages...and keep appealing to them for their whole lives! :)

In my opinion, (tee hee) actually, I am greatful to JRRTolkein. His books intoduced me to the insights, and imaginary worlds of fantasy and majic. The Hobbit was the first fantasy book I ever read. I have been lost in all of this ever since. :read:

I have done Dungeons and Dragons adventures, Gotten into three forums dealing with various aspects of fantasy and majic, ( one is my own forum). I have a dragon friend, I used to know a witch.....................and I own my own shoppe;)

Apart from being a fantastic book and everything said above this, reading Tolkien, and esp. LotR, brought me out of a safe hole and into the real, dangerous world, much like Frodo really, and learned me to cope with it. It helped me realize the power within me to be all that I can be, and tought me how to leave my fears behind me. As some may say that I would eventually have left that hole anyway, Tolkien was the one pushing me out, and I have learned so much from his books. I hope that I in some way can pass this on to my children, cuz if I manage that I will have come a long way!
