View Full Version : LOTR and school ::cringes::

yes, my friends, there's that dreaded word once again. School. ::gasps:: but as the adolescent and pre-adolescent (and maybe adult) community gears up for that exciting, and often abhored time of year, questions arise in my mind for the LOTR community.
first of all, for those joining their peers in the grinding daily ritual of lacking sleep only to be taught *important* matters such as stoichiometry and algebra at an ungodly hour once again (but with one year more experience than last year): what classesare you taking? are you doing anything different than last year? are you plastering your bookbags with LOTR merchandise and crudely printed photos of Orli and Elijah? have you been pathetically planning your first-day-back outfit since june (yes, i have, and let me tell you it DOES include the one ring ;))?
and for everyone: are/were you known around your school as "that Tolkien kid" or is it just me?

Well, I've been in school since the fifteenth of August, and it hasn't been so bad. I think a big difference is that I'm an upper classmen (junior). There aren't any classes I have that I dislike, my favorate being psychology, my least of course being Algebra 2.
Regarding Lotr, I've mentioned the book or the films once or twice, but no one except my three best friends know the extent of my obsession....... I have close friends at school but I would most likely never hear the end of it.... lol
There is a guy in my school sometimes hailed as "the Tolkien kid," and he's very well-liked. He's not the smart time, a flunkee and a goof-off (great guy, btw). Despite his terrible behaviour he can be seen every so often pulling out a tattered copy of Fotr, TTT, or Rotk. I've talked to him about it a few times (I become terribly shy in his presence), and he's always spoken earnestly if not lengthily about it. :)

Sadly, I have no friends who enjoys LOTR, not even one who has seen it. I am quite alone when it comes to expressing my obsession with others. Because frankly, no one cares. mecry Of course, I will have a few picture from FOTR in my locker, but none will be showing on ym binders, as I will be most likely to get evil looks, as most the people in my awful school community has a strange disliking for LOTR. Beg your pardon, but they are all a bunch of 'follow the crowd', popular wannabe's, if you ask me. heh, I hope to make a new friend who loves LOTR as I do, now that I am running out of trustworthy friends.
And about those classes.... (ACK! NOT THE CLASSES) I am not taking anything out of what you would get in elementary school. All the required classes, and a-bit-o french, orchestra, and art on the side. heh quite boring if you ask me... I have no clue what my future will bring and what I may want to do with it.
I am going back to school on sept. 3rd by the way... and OH! How I dread the day!mecry

I'm heading off to college on September 9th so i'm really nervous. School wasn't so bad for me. Most of my friends were/are film fanatics so when they saw the film they loved it (except for one who prefers Star Wars episode II... ) but none have read the book.

yeah Nessa, go juniors! i start the 4th with what's labeled 'the toughest year of them all" in regards to colleges and high school. and i also know waht you mean, elbereth, with those wannabe's. luckily for my school it's big enough that they dont take the advanced classes so i never get to see them hahaha lol.
this year i'm taking survey of British Literature a, but i'm pretty sure Tolkien will not be mentioned, just shakespeare, shakespeare, and shakespeare. although in my desktop publishing class i'm looking forward to playing around with graphics and making movie and book jackets, (and fan art ;))

I'm a high school senior this year, but unfortunately i'm not taking any classes where tolkien is even gonna *begin* to come up.
I tried to get them to do a tolkien class a senior english elective, though. =D But it was shot down instantly... :(
But you know what really gets me? My summer reading was "prayer for owen meany". My friend, who goes to a different school, had "the hobbit"! grrr....

Also I have a friend who loves LORt. So we tlk about it pretty often. I Know people in my english class that thought LORt was boring or even hard to understand because of all the characters. I was like What? No way!

I know people who dont understand Lotr or find it boring, their just silly and have no idea what they're missing out on :)

September 2nd,2002, 01:11 AM
yeah... I took one of my friends to the movie because all my other friends were going crazy for it, but she didn't like it... For some reason she would rather watch thos un-realistic disney movies on TV... ugh pfbbt She has no Idea of the true nature of the story, because she is blinded by those 'made-4-teens' movies. yuck
Little Devil
September 2nd,2002, 01:18 AM
Yep, I did the same with one of my friends and she hated it! how could she? I guess she was to thick to understand it as LOTR is kinda like there's more to what you just see. :)
Galadriel
September 2nd,2002, 03:07 AM
Well yeah i guess you are all right. I went to see LOTR with two of my friends. My and my other friend loved it and would go see it like a million more times. This was also before i had read the booka nd I couldn't wait to do that either. biut the other girl we wemt with thought it was just alright. She admitted it kept her enterained but she said that she wouldn't go see it again and thought the books boring. I was like No way
Black Rider
September 2nd,2002, 04:05 AM
whenever i went to see it, and the theatre was packed, the audience would always laugh at the pipe-weed scene "finest weed in the south farthing" "roflmao roflmao " it was so pathetic
Akiba
September 2nd,2002, 05:37 AM
I know people who've seen it and like it but really don't care much for it and actually most people i talk to haven't even seen it one of my friends loved it and was all into it but now she doesn't even really seem to wanna even watch it one more time and at the beginning I couldn't understand why she liked it so muh cause she saw it before meand then when I started liking it she stopped so I have no one to talk lotr to anyways about school I start this thursday and actually kinda looking forward to it maybe not the work but the socialism I actually got pretty good classes pplwise

ah! i missed my LOTR talk in english!! (Kimmy never told me either!) argh... stupid schedule mess-ups! As far as i can tell, not too many people are into LOTR in my school like Galadriel was saying. Some people didn't even read it!! (when it was required) and they were going to get sparknotes and i was like "NO! you gotta read the book! it's really good!" lol i don't know how anyone can not like Tolkien's books!
Anyway, as far as my schedule goes... i'm hoping to get into an already crowded honors english class where LOTR was a summer reading requirement. but as i said before, everyone's schedules were messed up so i don't even know if i'll be able to get in. :(

Good luck HobbitFriend! entdraught
I made my G.C.S.E. options...(like, on top of the compulsary ones)...
ART, FRENCH, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, ELECTRONICS. :(
Why ELECTRONICS????!!!!! What was i thinking?
I am lucky to have the only english teacher in the school to actually like LOTR...and she has promised me some discussions... veryhappy
But on the down side...the teacher is foreign and people have to correct her spellings all the time! :nono:
Little Devil

Hehe..I've got to make my G.C.S.E potions this year! arrghh,I know for sure I'm taking music and probably drama. :)
TheRingBearer
September 3rd,2002, 05:50 PM
Pil, those are nearly the same options I took, except for Geography and Electronics. You should enjoy History and hope fully French won't be too hard for you as I had the WORST teacher. She couldn't control a class to save her life lol
Galadriel
September 3rd,2002, 08:34 PM
Hobbit Friend! What do you mean Kimmy and I never told you about our discussion. We never had one. like I said no one cares anout the book and the teacher is more concerned with the other two we had to read. You reall need to let me know if your getting in the class. I mean Let me no soon. the wait is killing me.

Well, I just got back from my first day of school, and I have never been so sorry to going anywhere than today. What tortue! What an awful experience! I tried to think about LOTR during those bad embarassing moments... but it sadly did not help.
I took this class and I have never been so desperate to drop a class... I am going to change it to a study hall first thing in the morning.
P.S. Sorry 'bout my complaining... i had to tell someone ya know?

R.E. is religious education...something i've had to study for the last three years and now is outta there! :hooray:
G.C.S.E. is a qualification in a subject usually sat by 16 year olds (yr elevens at any rate). It gets studied for two years, yr 10 and yr 11.
Or....if ur MY school. You'll make us do G.C.S.E.s when we are 14...and after studying it for a few months...aaaaaah! But that's over and done with now...and i move on to year 10 with better hopes for G.C.S.E. teaching! :)

oh ok thanks pil, i didn't know that about those subjects. yah, i'd probably go mad if i had to take religious studies, i'm so atheist and would get so frustrated with that subject. and g.c.s.e. sounds like our s.a.t.'s or similar.
omg i started school wednesday, and i'm completely stressed out of my wazoo! it's horrible. i have like 16 books, that's 2 per class average, and let me tell you we don't get any in gym or computers ;) and if my a.p. class doesn't kill me, then i certainly will be reaching death by the time the exam pops up in may. i'm glad the forums closed for a while or i'd be so behind, because i have NO time to go on on the weekdays, excely at like 10 when i'm dead tired. aargh. so i now have the holy weekends to be free, AFTER homework.
ok sorry i was just venting. resume your normal activities now, if indeed you were paying attention. (it's really not that bad, account for some exageration when reading, i'm using my poetic license lol)

I feel your pain Black Rider!!! Here's what I'm looking at: A.P. History, A.P. Psychology/Sociology, Honers English, Honers Chemistry, Algebra 2 (this being harder than the AP classes combined, for me) among others. :o Add about three soccer games a week and practice every other day in between....
And to think I still had time to miss this place. lol
I think I should add how completely average as far as intelligence goes.... I got into these classes by working my rear off, and thats the only way I'm surviving them. ;) I figure all that will look pretty good when I'm try to get into college.....
Oh, and I'm not complaining at all! I'm having a good ol' time wearing myself out impossibly. lol

i wanted to take a.p. psych, but it's only offered to seniors b/c of the mass popularity :-( and i took algebra 2 last year (i'm in precalc this year :o ) and if it's the same in your area of the country as it is in mine, it's not THAT hard. (i'm NOT a math person also)

*Hrmpf!* pfbbt Today in English we went down to the library to take a tour etc. and we had 10 min. to look for a book... So i, of course, go to Tolkien's little section, when I overhear my teacher talking with a student about The Lord of the Rings. Me, being very nosey when it comes to LOTR interrupted and said, "WHAT" So he said they were discussing LOTR and he said he didn't like it much because he wasnt much of a fantasy person and that it was too long....
He got a word of two from me... lol ;) I completely couldn't hold it in and just nearly said, "NO! but its so good, I love it! I actually didn't think it was long enough..."
He said ok and I think I scared him hahaha... but he was an english teacher and he thought a book was too long? I pity him. pfbbt If he, a grown man, cannot sit through a long book as well as a student 2 times younger, I don't know why he said he loved to read lol
