I was wondering if anyone--particularly if you are in the New York, Pennsylvania area are into Combat Re-enactment, regardless of whether its based in Middle-earth or not--what I mean is any type of armoured combat using rattan, steel or boffer weapons in a formal setting like the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronisms) or more barbarion type warfare like the Tuchux (UUAAAH to my fellow clans kin) or boffer middle-earth warfar like Dagohir--
If you are or are interested in learning more because you always wanted to get into it --sound off here and I'll share some pics and stories to get you into the spirit of the warrior, and perhaps we can set up some training sessions with our clan champion Gijchar and Annora.

I started a thread under the Armoury called sword fighting. We may be able to get people to share their knowledge on all the combat systems and fighting styles available.

How far from Boston do you live?

May be a little to far to travel with my busy schedule, but we can still trade stories here on the forum.

I dont usually got there but www.swordforum.com has a practice partner search section kinda like a swordsperson classifieds. I was banned from there due to an unresolveable dispute with the owner of the forum (LOL) but you might be able to find someone closer.

I am interested in that sort of fighting, not really with swords because personally it is not my choice weapon, but overall attending an event in which you can fight a true battle like they did back in older times. My weapon of choice is a war axe styled from the ninth century, or a club. I hope to attend a festival in Europe later this year in which you can legally fight using real weapons. Most attending usually wear chainmail for protection, though I noticed most that do get hurt usually have scrapes or wounds in an unprotected area (the head included). Nothing too serious thankfully. It is hard to explain but I hardly have any interest in most weaponry past the 1400s. I would be very thankful if there was a larger organization of LOTR based battles, would be pretty expensive getting armor based from the movie but well worth it

Greetings Walderomir!
Thanks for your honored input! We have a number of clansmen, women who fight with axes---my fiance fights at my side with a pole arm , and axe head at the top of it---I understand not wanting to use weaponry past the 1400's --I personally prefer fighting either with a long great sword, a katana or one hand axes-1 in each hand
If you want a middleearth type battles go for Dagohir, but they utilize boffer weapons, and tho fun at times can lack in realism(tends to look like a nerf battle)
Also I wouldn't get armour based on the LOTR movies, its inaccurate according to Tolkien's details, and as much as the documentaries say they are on the DVD's they are not---for 1 the gondorian helm they say lacked a detailed description about the wings on the side, when if you turn to Tolkien's letters, Tolkien gives it! and their was not any plate armour at all
If you are interested in learning in detail from Master Blacksmith Joe Piela come to Ringbearers Day, where with The Lonely Mountain Forge, we will be doing a program spot "Small Unit Battle Tactics of Middle-earth" where we will detail, describe, from Tolkien writings how warfare played out, the types of armour, and also do a combat demo---

Hi Anthony,

There are some decent boffers coming out now.

http://www.rsw.com.hk

I've heard very nice things about these products and may pick up one or two.

If you want I'd be happy to start a discussion on the film trilogy's Gondorians, and am more than willing to play devil's advocate about it. ;) You do have a good point about the helms (though I quite like the movie designs). Anyway feel free to start a thread about it so i don't keep highjacking this one. lol

Hey IronHills Dwarf--
Cool boffer site, but one thing about a wily Tuchuk, we make our own weapons-boffer or otherwise--its the idea of "oneness" with your weapon with us--whether its building your own boffer, rattan or other kind of weapon--the more your able to build it, or work on it yourself, the closer you are to the lifestyle of ancient warriors,---
If you wish to begin a thread on the films' Gondorians more power to ya mellon--right now tho I think I need more book talk than film--I have lots o deadlines for papers and lectures, and the more involved in book talk the better--which means after Ringbearers Day I will be joining more on the book threads of the forum here--:-)
I am really steadfast against the films--but would contribute occasionally to film discussion,
Thanks
Anthony

I get what your saying on construction, I like making my own wasters, but boffers are hard to get right (balanced, sturdy etc...). Ancient warriors (like their modern day counterparts) head to the smithy or armoury. ;)

I'll hold off on the Gondorian thread then till you've got the big day over with. I'm sure we could keep it book focused if you prefer.

You are right, there are many differences between armor from the books and from the movies. I personally like some of the armor used in the movie, especially seeing the Rohirrim armor loosely based on Viking armor. One other type of armor I really liked from the movie must've been the Uruk-hai armor, especially the Uruk Pikeman outfit. I've seen amazing replicas made, some actual steel while others used a plastic composite, came out looking great either way but very pricey :mmmm: . Recently I've been getting more interested in the fact that most of the armor used for the movie was made of plastic rather than metal. Must be a lot cheaper as well as lighter, good for some festivals just for show rather than actually having to wear around 20+ pounds of well oiled chainmail. Well, it is good to see people with the same interests as I :)
