I was talking with a good friend of mine who does the most incredible LOTR costumes and I said to her that there would probably be a lot of pent-up demand for Eowyn's/Finduilas' blue starred mantle.

"... and over all, the lady Eowyn wore a great blue mantle of the colour of deep summer-night, and it was set with silver stars about the hem and throat. Faramir had sent for this robe and wrapped it about her; and he thought she looked fair and queenly indeed as she stood there by his side. The mantle was wrought for his mother, Finduilas of Amroth, who died untimely, and was to him but a memory of loveliness in far days and of his first grief; and her robe seemed to him raiment fitting for the beauty and sadness of Eowyn."

She's done Aragorn's shirts for me and we're currently working on a full Boromir outfit.

I wanted to check out with the Ringers here if I'm right -- would you get Eowyn's mantle for yourself (or for those Faramirs out there -- your own Eowyn)?

Here's a sample of her work ...

Thanks in advance,

I would love to get a copy of the Starry Mantel, as well as an Eowyn dress!!!
Its just the money that is a problem...usually these things range in the hundreds, and that is a lot to spend on something I really dont have a place to wear :(
But her work looks beautiful, thanks for posting it!

I asked IDH to move this thread to this forum, cus a lot of costume related question started surfacing, hope ya'll don't mind! :) As to your question Domlegolas, AlleyCatScratch (http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/) is the best site for costume research! We also have some research done in here, within the thread "Q&A on sewing and design, give and get!" Or if you want to make a costume and don't know how that's also a good place to start asking for help!

I hope you don't mind, Eowyn of Rohan, that I used your piccie from PS as reference...it's such a beautiful mantle and I'm sure a lot of people would like to see it!

I've visited your friends site earlier, Eldarion, she has lots of beautiful costumes! Will be exciting to see what she can do with this one...I looked over at AlleyCatScratch but noone's posted any research on it yet. Anyhow I'm sure some will buy it...it's just not so that everyone enjoys sewing! Is her site in our link-collection by the way? She should be...all the better chance to get business!

hmmmm *ponders on a bright idea that suddenly struck* I gotta ask Illu something! *runs off*

Hi Cuiel Rilwen,

That is a beautiful pic of a mantle, but it's really not the canon mantle from the book. Overall, I think PJ and Ngila did an incredible job of costuming across the three movies, but I have to nitpick here.

Little history to begin with:

Finduilas came from Dol Amroth, which was on the seacoast. She married Denethor, lived in Minas Tirith. She most likely lived on the upper level, which is basically a castle carved into the side of a high mountain crag. A mantle in either case, in either environment has to be WARM AND SNUGGLY.

The canon mantle suggests this (from my quote *way* above <g>) but the movie mantle doesn't. It appears to be made of a thinner fabric with crystal beading sewn onto it and gold embroidered trim. Not exactly what a delicate woman would wear in a howling wind...

Think of the Irish Aran sweater vs. a golf sweater.

I can understand why PJ and ND made the mantle the way they did - visually it's stunning, even for the short time it was on the screen, and you do want to show off Eowyn's chemise and figure.

From a wearability perspective, the canon mantle makes more sense. After all, who doesn't want to wear some LOTR clothing to work or in a casual setting and have it dawn on onlookers - "Hey, isn't that... aren't you wearing ..."

Oh...I didn't consider that the mantle you were talking about would be a different edition than the movie-mantle. I'm sorry, I guess I'm just so used to the fact that the movie-costumes are being researched and copied that it didn't occure to me.

Does your friend have any schetches or research posted on her site that would make it easier to say would I be interested in buying it or not?

Hi all,

My friend at Twin Roses Designs (www.twinrosesdesigns.com) has created Eowyn's chemise and starry mantle!! This is the movie version, not the JRR canon version ...

Ooooooooooo that is gorgeous!!!! Really wonderful...the fabric is absolutely right...the glittering effect just right and more subtle than another version I saw...I like this! I'm sure someone will want to buys this...considering you get two garments it really isn't terribly high priced even if it's a lot of money! I really like what I see of the chemise too...the smooth neckline for example. I hope she gets more piccies up, I would like to see the silk chemise without the cloak over it!
