lol Difficult to believe but I am starting a new story. It has nothing to do with the first one although it is about my favorite ME character  . It takes place in the fourth ages. Long after the destruction of the ring. Enjoy. veryhappy

Part one. The nightmare

The rising sun brushed the land in hues as the nature awakened under its warmth. The flowers and trees blossomed with life just as the birds rose into songs praising the morning. The wind toyed with the waist high grasses bending them to the ground at his caprice when suddenly they came separated not according to his will. Two stallions dared to cross the vast field riding hard towards a line of forest on the other end. Their elven riders encouraged the mounts into the swiftest run they could manage. Ahead rode a maiden with a hair of silver and gold. Her cheeks slightly redden by the breath-taking gallop. Not too far behind her was an elf, his hair of dark ebony. His glance came ever present of the graceful figure ahead of him.

The she-elf was first to reach the forest where she slowed her mount giving a moment for her companion to catch up. “My Lady, you fly like a wind. I could not keep up.” Said dark haired elf. His main motivation not to keep up lay in admiring his wife when she galloped across the plains.
The she-elf playfully turned to face him. “As I recall the first one to reach the trees, is to ask a wish from another.”
“I shall do everything in my power to oblige.” Jested her companion with fake naivety as she-elf motioned her stallion closer to where he was.
Her eyes, blue as the morning sky and twice as gentle rested on him with unmistakable love. “I shall ask that you embrace me and never part with me again, be with me forever.”
His lips parted in radiant smile. She waited for his laugh to lighten her spirit and the more terror struck her by contrast as she heard ominous voice laughing out around them.
“He shall never be with you.” Thundered the voice cruelly. The she-elf bolted towards her companion reaching out to him. Dark cloud blocked the sun and hideous creatures pounced on the resisting elves drawing them farther apart. She struggled calling his name, “Elrond!” The name charged him like lightning as he managed to momentarily free himself from the orc’s grasps. Black arrow struck his heart before he could fully rise. His eyes, colour of a liquid silver blazed at her with a last dying spark. “Celebrian!” She heard the last cry.

:whoohoo: For finally starting a new story, LP!!veryhappyI had been looking forward to that!!:hyper:

I like the prologue already!! :p

As it is a new story, however, and it has nothing to do with your great "Ealmane" one, I thought it a good idea to move it to its own thread...I'm waiting for you to give me a title for it; I had to make one up to make the thread happen! ;)

Wow great start!
This really is just a nightmare right? The peace and fun turned into danger and tension, is great, and the tension feels more because of the peace.

I like it!

Part two, waking in the night

“Celebrian?” A comforting arm lulled her into security as she opened her eyes. The blurry world slowly came into focus while her mind switched from the dream to reality. She was in bed, in the dark room with stars peeking through a transparent curtain on the window. Lightly glowing figure of her husband leaned over her. “What disturbs you so, mel?” He asked gently, pushing away his own vexation to comfort his wife.
“You are well.” She whispered. He nodded guessing what she meant.
Celebiran sighed with relief but ran her hands down his back and rested them on his shoulders in case she was mistaken. The thirty years since he came to Valinor were like a droplet in the sea in comparison to the millennia they spend apart. She feared to wake one day to discover he was not with her.
Elrond leaned on the pillows and cradled his wife on his lap. “Of course I’m well. I feel better than I ever had since I lost you.” He brushed his cheek on her hair. “It was only a bad dream.” He assured her. He too had trouble fully realizing that he finally deserved the happiness to be with her again.
Celebrian yawned relaxing against him, dreams were claming her. Soft words were whispered to her, their meaning muffled by sleep but they served their soothing purpose combined with rocking.

Has it really being thirty years since their reunion? Her dreams swayed towards their first meeting after their separation. She simultaneously wished for his return and feared to see him again because she knew he would change as she has also changed. All her doubts, insecurities, and fears melted like a morning fog under a light of the sun as soon as she saw him. One thing had never changed for them. They always loved each other.

Part three. Arriving to Valinor

Stepping lightly on top of the white sand Celebrian crossed the beach to the changing border where little sea waves where licking the shore. She came there every morning to wait. Her glance traveled far to the invisible shores beyond the line where the sea blended with the sky. First she was waiting in the healing gardens where her soul was purged of the trauma she sustained in middle earth when she was captured and tormented by orcs. She did not want to leave her home and family but she could not stay in the land where every sound, every motion or shadow struck her with senseless terror. She departed for Valinor ripping a chunk of her heart that still remained in the place she could not go back to.

When the healers allowed her to leave the gardens she came to visit the beach, desperately looking for a ship that would bring news of her family. The ships indeed came with news, more often in the past decade than before. The brought news carried little comfort, for many elves were like refugees fleeing west from the growing darkness. They unwillingly shared any information. She received brief notes from her husband that were one way contact. She could not answer. Their content hardly contained any details, he probably spared her from that knowledge but it troubled her more because than she would imagine anything.

She prayed that her family would survive and come to her one day. She knew they would not be the same when she sees them perhaps they may have forgotten her and did not love her anymore. She wanted to be sure they were safe. She never even received a promise that they will return. She remembered few private minutes she shared with her husband before she sailed west. More than anything he wanted to assure her that he will follow her but he could not lie. “I cannot guarantee to return to you.” He said. Celebrian did not accept the freedom he was offering her. “I will wait for you and we will meet again even if I must travel to the Hall of Mandos to find you.” She told him. She could almost feel him standing next to her again.

Someone was standing next to her, a presence. It was not a physical presence. She felt it in her mind that someone was near but not daring to enter her thoughts. Celebrian reached out to the weak link and almost came overawed with emotions. “Hello Celebrian.” A familiar voice talked to her. She threw her mind across the waves searching for him a little startled she could not. Surely if their link returned her husband was somewhere in Valinor waters. “Did you really see this little of me before?” The voice was hurt. Celebrian recognized her mistake. She was looking for a bright sapphire aura of Vilya that overarched his own glow. It was gone now leaving purely his majestic light. He opened his mind to her. Celebrian slowly examined what changed, not as much as she thought he would. There were new scars; his daughter, fading of Imladris, lives he could not save as a healer. She thought a loss of Vilya power would be one of the worse scars. It was not. When the ring faded it took nothing from him although he thought it did. She understood his fears were similar to her own and they were irrational now that they could feel each other. A powerful surge of joy emanated from her and playfully brushed across his mind. She heard a low chuckle. “At least wait for me to step on the shore then you can touch whatever you want.” She was laughing out loud on an empty beach that was not that empty anymore.

Part four. Early morning

The band of light playfully ran across her eyelashes waking Celebrian. As she opened her eyes her hand traveled to a part of the bed where her husband slept. She quickly awakened not finding him there, however she could still sense his smell, the blend of cinnamon, tea and berries. Light footsteps on the other side of the room got her attention before worry overtook her. Celebrian looked up at her husband who came out of the adjacent room buttoning his shirt.
He smiled at her. “Good morning. How do you feel?”
Instead of the answer Celebrian pushed herself upwards allowing her nightgown to slip off. Elrond sat down on the edge of the bed and patted her naked shoulder. Celebrian lightly sank her teeth into the hand. He pushed her into the pillows. After a brief struggle Celebrian found herself pinned down, something that surprised her each time. “Hungry?” He asked with light mockery in his voice. “I could prepare us some breakfast.” His lips played close to hers. “I send Elvira away so we can spend this afternoon together. No one is invited to visit us and I will not be teaching any lore classes today.” He knew she didn’t need to do anything either.
“You can cook?” Teased him Celebrian perfectly aware that he in fact could and it was not bad. She managed to free herself from the grip still remaining close to him.
He pressed index finger to his lips. “Tell no one. The Valinor would be shaken in its core by the revelation.”
Celebrian gave him a small kiss. “Why don’t we cook something together a bit later?” Elrond grinned. He preferred watching his wife getting dressed in the morning to messing with food. “As you wish.”

Part five. Breakfast

Elrond threw a light shawl over Celebrian’s shoulders before taking a seat across from her at a small table. The elves didn’t feel cold but the shawl was comforting in a chilled morning air. Their simple breakfast consisted of tea, lemblas and sweets. Celebrian watched attentively across the steam from their cups as the half-elf spread raspberry jam on a slice of lemblas, his eyes thoughtfully on the task. The concentrated look appeared even when he was doing something as simple as eating. When he finished Celebrian stretched her arm trying to snatch the lemblas but he pulled it away with impish grin inviting her to get closer.

Just when their breakfast was getting interesting a loud call interrupted it. “Lord Elrond!” Celebrian noted half amused and half annoyed smile on Elrond’s lips. Some guests didn’t need an invitation. They did not respond verbally, waiting for the visitor to show up.
“There you are.” A golden hair Vanya discovered their location. It didn’t take him long to find the couple. The call was a warning that made sure he didn’t walk into something intimate.
“Good morning Glorfindel.” They both greeted him.
The elf greeted them with a radiant smile to hide his vexation. “Morning Lady Celebrian and Lord Elrond.” Glorfindel was definitely agitated by something if he was so formal.
“Lord of what?” Half-elf asked smiling to relieve the tension. “How many times do I need to tell you I am just Elrond?”
Glorfindel insisted stubbornly. “Still a Lord whatever that means, when you are not a Lord then you are a Master.”
“What brings you here?” Elrond changed the subject. He was pleased to see his old friend but also tempted to get rid of him. Celebrian noted her husband eyeing their visitor like he wanted to throw him out on his ear.
“Eamane.” Glorfindel spoke of his wife. The elf after several millennia of wondering alone found someone special. “She, not without my help, dropped the vial you gave us. She was sneezing all night.” His wife’s pregnancy developed uncommon side effect. She was allergic to flowers. He glanced at them pleadingly.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Elrond’s annoyed expression change to a concern. “You should have come earlier. We don’t mind even if it was late evening.” The half-elf was compassionate to Glorfindel’s fussing. “Fortunately I kept in mind accidents when those potions were made and have extra.” Elrond rose questionably looking at his wife.
“I will be right here.” Celebrian covered an amused sparkle in her eyes with eyelashes. Elrond kissed her fingertips and hurried to get the potion. Celebrian sipped her tea and nibbled a biscuit waiting for them to return.

“Where were we?” A shiver ran down her spine with her husband standing right behind her.
“Must you sneak up on me?” She was not displeased. Celebrian reached upward pulling a dark hair lock.
“I like my victims aroused.” Followed a sly answer. “Glorfindel left as soon as he got what he wanted. He apologized for not returning to speak with you. He was in a hurry to return to his spouse as was to mine.” Elrond leaned closer to her.
“Elrond?” The Vanya appeared in their breakfast area again. “Almost forgot to tell you the news. Another ship entered Valinor waters. It should dock in a few hours.” He heard it when he visited the city last evening.
“We will come to gape.” Celebrian smiled and Elrond sighed.

Part six. Reunions.

“Ada!”(father) Celebrian flew up the deck with havoc at her wake as she disturbed the elves who were exiting the ship by moving in opposite direction from all of them. She almost pounced a silver haired elf who was waiting for everyone to disembark before he would step on the Valinor shore. “I missed you little one.” Celeborn affectionately smoothened array of gold and silver locks. “And mom?” She teased him. The elf looked in the direction where his wife patiently waited in shades of the trees separated from main crowd. “She knew you were coming and didn’t tell me.” Celebrian accused even though it was done for her sake. She would have found no peace waiting for the ship was she to know in advance who was aboard.

Celeborn released his daughter just as she felt someone staring at her. Turning around she encountered two sets of blue-grey eyes that contained a mixture of disbelief, awe and affection. Although there was no difference in their appearances Celebrian could still tell who one was who. Upon getting caught staring Elrohir found his shoes extremely interesting while Elladan met her glance almost with challenge. “Sons.” Celebrian approached them slowly fearful they would run from her. She searched for any accusation traces for leaving them nearly millennia ago. She was confident her husband explained to them why it was necessary for her to leave and that it was not her or their fault she could not stay. They seemed to understand but there was doubt and uncertainty how to approach her in the glances the brothers exchanged. Celebrian held out both of her hands, palms open to them. “Do you recognize me?” She asked softly. No hesitation, two dark heads nodded at once. “And you do not want to hug me?” The twins exchanged another look. “We would…” Elrohir began hesitantly. “Like to.” His brother finished the sentence as they did sometimes. Celebrian found herself sandwiched between two elves. She almost instinctively pulled them closer to her examining them as the twins relaxed more. She almost laughed noting the old mischievous glitter returning to their eyes. So far they were too baffled by everything.

“We can go ashore now.” Celeborn was first to move from the spot where he stood exchanging glances and private mind conversation with Galadriel. Celebrian dragged her sons into opposite direction from where her father went granting him private exchange with his wife. Luckily their attention lingered more or nearly another copy of themselves leading a she-elf towards them. The twins were planning to pounce their father as soon as they were off the ship however the presence of the she-elf spoiled their plans. They greeted Elrond gaping. “Elladan, Elrohir do you have any idea who this is?” He asked them. He hid a smile observing the twins wrack their brains trying to remember if it was anyone they knew before. “I would like you to meet your grandmother, Elwing.” He finally took mercy. The twins nodded identifying their reaction to this mythical figure in their family. “We never…” “Saw you before.” At least they managed to put the complexity of their situation in one phrase. Elwing smiled amused by her grandchildren. “This is how the life is. Sometimes we have no idea someone distant cares about us, sometimes those we love are taken from us by death or separated by distance, and sometime those whom we have not seeing for a long time but none the less love are returned to us. The twins nodded their understanding. “We are glad to be here.” They smiled first time since they entered Valinor.

Part seven. The elflings.

The sun peeked through the melting clouds causing the forest beneath them to glow as the light bounced off the droplets left after the rain. An elf advanced through the trees careful to pull all wet branches out of the way and avoiding mud wherever possible. He searched for a place to sit down but the ground was not too welcoming. At last he settled on an elfling swing, deep in contemplation. An hour later he heard light footsteps approaching but chose to ignore them although they were right behind him. The ground swirled as he was given a most generous push. Holding on to the ropes to avoid the unwelcoming muddy ground he quickly looked over his shoulder wondering who would dare do that to him. ~Of course.~ He should not have wondered.
"My dear anciend friend do you not think such entertainment is suitable for someone a lot smaller and several thousand years younger?" The bar screeched dangerously as he recieved few more pushes. "Have you considered what will happen if somebody sees this? They will think I lost my mind." Said the half-elf.
"They would think it's good to see you having fun. However if somebody would be too shallow to see this differently what will they think about me doing this? I am older than you." He receive a beaming answer.
Who told you I’m having fun?” The half-elf asked hiding amusement. “No one believes you have a mind to begin with.” He was rewarded with a push that nearly made him fall of the swing. Elrond tightened his grip on the ropes.
“You have lost you mind.” Two voices were followed by two identical elves.
The bar began to bend and half-elf jumped off not waiting for the structure to collapse. He shot the told you so look to Glorfindel before looking at his sons however finding them nearly laughing. “What brings you here?” He eyed them suspiciously.
“Mother, she was reading and she said you went for a walk.” Although they arrived only few days ago the twins could identify when Celebrian was worried.
Elrond shrugged certainly not willing to discuss what was on his mind.
“He will not tell us what is wrong.”
“There is nothing wrong. Can’t an elf be moody once in a while without being pestered about it?”
“He won’t tell.” Confirmed Elrohir. “When the questioned do not surrender he must be dealt with.”
“Let’s toss him into the pond.” Suggested his brother.
“You’re not making this easy. Since you won’t tell us what’s wrong we will have to distract you somehow from sulking.” Said Glorfindel. Until this point Elrond was confident they were joking however as they continued it became clear they really would do it.
“That will not be happening.” Elrond tried to pin them down with a stern look. He began walking away slowly pretending he was not running away.
Glorfindel rolled his eyes. “We’re not intimidated.”
“You should be otherwise I might have to teach you a lesson.”
“What kind of lesson?” They edged towards him wicked smiles playing on their lips.
Quickly weighting out the options to be either wet or sacrificing the stern façade the half-elf turned to his heels and escaped down the path. It has taken the elves several seconds to digest an unexpected turn before they raced after him. Elrond disappeared around a sharp path bend, following him the trio arrived on a glade with no one in sight. The tracks stopped abruptly in the middle of nowhere.
“I forgot how fast and sneaky he can be when he wants to.” Glorfindel muttered disappointed. “He is hiding because there was no time to run far from here.”
“We will search.” Said Ellandan. “Are you sure he didn’t learn how to fly while he had Vilya?” The other twin scanned the trees or maybe the sky above them. Half of hour later the three elves met on the same side of the glade almost frustrated with their effort fruitless. Suddenly they were covered by a cold shower as if a tree poured all the rain droplets it collected at once. They jumped away too late completely soaked. Glaring upwards they found Elrond sitting on a branch, one hand holding onto the trunk struggling not to fall of and another across his stomach, shaking with silent laughter.
“Come down here all three demanded.” To their surprise the half-elf complied lightly jumping down. He landed easily but than staggered paling.
Confused the twins moved foreword to support him. “What’s wrong?” Before they reached him the color returned to his face, the posture returned to normal.
“Nothing.” He grinned wickedly at them.
“Oh than we can still toss you into the pond.”
Elrond raised an eyebrow giving twins reprimanding look they received as elflings that didn’t fail now. “No pond.” They understood he will be angry if they did it.
“That will teach me to start games with Elrond.” Glorfindel muttered disappointed.

Part eight. The wet bet.

“Ada is not here yet?”
Celebrian looked over the top of her book at her son who brought a trail of dirty footprints into the living room. He plumped onto a sofa soaking it with his dripping clothes. Some things never changed even over three thousand years.
“Go to your room and dress into something dry. Then you can clean up this mess.” Celebrian told her son. Answering his question was not necessary.
Elrohir flinched, cleaning up was the last thing on his mind. “We wanted to toss him into the pond and got soaked ourselves. I think he is in a better mood now.”
“Where is you brother?” Celebrian asked concerned assuming Elladan was as wet as his brother.
The twin waved his hand generally. “He is off to Haldir. Making more bets.” Sly smile indicated that he knew exactly what the outcome would be.
Celebrian was proud how quickly her sons got absorbed in a world they never saw before. They found all previous acquaintances and were informed of what happened in the past ten years as well as what was stirring at the moment. The gossip they were speaking about concerned Glorfindel’s family. He decided against being told the gender of their child before he or she was born. The other elves were too curious and made bets on who it would be. “Did you make a bet with your brother as well?”
Elrohir shifted in his seat with a self satisfied grin. “We have. I think the child will be a he but Elladan thinks that as well so my bet was a girl.” His smile increased at Celebrian’s confusion. “You don’t know what the loser has to do.” Celebrian didn’t feel like getting teased and pretended to return to reading. “The loser will have to help Ada teach lore classes for a month.” Elrohir said quickly. “Elladan hates it and he thinks I do too. It is an excuse for me to do it though. I was revising these skills secretly and I would like to do it. Doesn’t matter who is born I win either way.”
“You father would be pleased if one of you joined him.” Celebrian looked at the wet trail of footprints again then suggestively at Elrohir.
The twin sighed with his distraction failing. “All right, let me dry up first.” He met Elrond at the entrance to the living room. The half-elf was wearing different robes than the ones in the park.
“What was that about?” He asked carefully stepping over the mud before reaching his wife.
Celebrian pulled him to sit beside her. She put away the book. “We had a small conversation regarding Glorfindel’s family and a possible reason why he wanted to speak with you without his brother.”
“Everyone is looking for me to have such conversation. Perhaps I should start accepting the bribes. Too bad they do not dare ask Lady Galadriel instead of me. She should know.” The Valinor residents suspected Elrond being a healer who worked with Eamane knew the gender of the future baby.
Celebrian looked at him questionably. “Do you know?”
Amused sparkle in his eyes told her she will not have the answer. “We shall see.”

Oh and thanks for changing it Ithil! It somehow reads better that way. No offense of course LP! It's a lovely story and Celebrian and Elrond are obviously the focus, but as a side note... it's still nice. ;)

Part nine. The newborn.

“Mellon nin (my friend) please sit down. You are going to pace a trench in the floor boards.” Elrond was getting dizzy watching his friend make circles in the waiting room.
The anxious elf was about to reply irritably when a door opened revealing a she-elf healer. “Lord Glorfindel, come in to meet your son.” The elf froze shuffling his feet uneasily at the softly spoken phrase suddenly uncertain what to do. A helpful push from his friend carried him inside the room where a bundle was placed in his arms. Glorfindel held it close to his chest protectively keeping both arms around it. A blanket covered the newborn’s features and Glorfindel didn’t know how to unwrap it without taking one of his hands off the precious bundle. Luckily the blanket content didn’t wish to remain covered up too long and shuffled getting to the surface. The lively child remained silent but moved around a lot despite being few minutes old. Huge azure eyes shined with curiosity and trust, ready to absorb the world with the blessed naivety only the elflings possessed. He possessively wrapped both hands around the elder elf’s finger staring at his speechless father.
“He is adorable.” Celebrian appeared near his left arm. “What name would he have?”
The response came from a mother who lay surrounded by pillows. “Elgalad (radiant star) because he brought so much joyful light into our lives even before he was born.”
“He has your eye color.” Celebrian addressed Glorfindel trying to get a reaction from the new father.
“He also has your taste in clothing.” Elrond said teasingly joining Celebrian as the elfling directed his father’s sleeve into his mouth. Elgalad released the sleeve pouting and a first whimper escaped his lips.
“Could he be hungry already?” Suggested Glorfindel uncertainly. He crossed the room to sit down on the edge of the bed near his wife. “Thank you for this wonderful gift.” He whispered placing a child in her hands. Elgalad stopped crying. Glorfindel laid a kiss on Eamane’s brow. “How do you feel mel?” (love)

Elrond intertwined his fingers with his wife. Celebrian understood the unspoken words. “Your friend doesn’t need anyone to keep an eye on him. Let’s leave them to this private moment.” The couple quickly removed themselves from the house. They took a secret shortcut from Glorfindel’s home to their own not risking any questions from anyone they might meet.

Part ten. The late or early visit.

Soft whispers of the night wind and even breathing of the two elves lying entangled on the bed were a picture of undisturbed serenity until a pebble entered through the window hitting the dark haired occupant of the bed. The silver eyes opened into lazy slits just as another pebble hit him. Elrond disentangled from Celebrian’s arms. He prompted up on the elbow to peek outside. Dark eyebrow flew up questionably when he met the sapphire glance. Elrond tucked a blanket around his wife and sneaked outside. The golden haired elf climbed down from a tree branch near the bedroom window.
“Emergency. The orcs have given up their evil ways and have turned to charity work.” Elrond muttered uncertain whether he should be upset with being so impudently wakened.
“You said I was welcome to visit you any time.” Glorfindel retorted.
“I trusted you not to abuse this generous offer.” Elrond decided he was not upset.
They moved away from the house doors whispering. “It’s not like you had something more important to do than helping your friend who came in search of wisdom.”
Elrond compared his warm bed with a beautiful wife cradling around him peacefully to crawling around the bushes on a cold night with a half delusional friend. “Of course, I have nothing better to do.” He muttered sarcastically. “Although the wisdom is sleeping at this hour I would like to know what brings you here.”
“I just realized something.” Glorfindel paced around the half-elf vexed. “I’m a Father.”
“Oh?” Elrond disguised a snicker as a yawn.”
Glorfindel didn’t believe the deception. He looked at his friend anxiously not understanding what was so ironical in his dilemma. “I don’t know anything about being a farther! What do I do? You’re a father tell me.” He demanded
“First of all sit down.” Elrond motioned Glorfindel to a bench in his garden. “Secondly, what did you know about being a husband? Never the less you did an excellent job.” He subdued the frustrated gesture pulling his friend to sit. “Glorfindel, elflings do not come with instruction manuals. Parenting each child is a unique experience. You discussed this decision with others and prepared in advance now trust your instincts, yourself and your family to make right choices in his upbringing.” The intonations in his voice were soothing.
Glorfindel sighed heavily. “I know… I’m probably overreacting. It’s just that the moment I held him in my arms he gained a hold of my heart. I felt so protective and responsible to give him the best he can have.”
“That you will give.” Elrond understood his friend simply needed assurance. “Mellon nin (my friend) don’t doubt yourself. I speak with conviction when I say you will be a good father.” He smiled relieved to see the vanishing agitation in the other’s eyes. “Now, why don’t you return to your family and get some sleep.” ~They will be very upset if they find you missing.~ Thought Elrond.
Glorfindel got off the bench. “I suppose so. Are you sure?”
Elrond nodded. He yawned watching his friend disappear among the trees. Half asleep he managed to return to his bedroom without bumping into anything and cuddled in warm bed. Celebrian immediately reached out to him restoring their original sleeping position before he left.

Part eleven. Hurts and healing.

The chocolate brown eyes, that remained clear despite the exhaustion, looked at Elrond through the tangled black traces with kindled thought. “Erestor lie still.” He ordered brushing away the hair. He wrapped the elf’s hand between his palms. Through the establish link between them Elrond poured his energy into another helping the recovery. He stayed with other healers day and night in the recovery houses. It was where he also spent several unpleasant days after his arrival with Galadriel. The extinguished rings of power drained their bearers the worst. He felt cold shivers, the touch of Mandos and concentrated his warmth on them until the shivers ceased. Elrond lowered the hand back to the soft bed. “You will recover fully in a few days.” He said. The half-elf expected the arrival but it didn’t save him from the shock to see his old friend and post advisor in a pitiful state. The misty passage to was inevitably closing and each group that arrived from Middle Earth showed the signs of fading, a consequence of remaining where the familiar spiritual energy was drained from the land. “I know I should have left earlier but it was so difficult to let go of Imladris. I was there when it was first established. It was build as a sanctuary to preserve memory and history, now it is gone. The city was sad, empty and was slowly slipping away from the awing almost magical beauty.”
Elrond brushed away a tear from face. He didn’t speak fearful his voice would betray his emotions. “You need to rest.” He finally said.
A light hand touched his shoulder. “So should you.”
Elrond turned around to face his wife wondering how she managed to come into closed to anyone but patients and healers area. “I am not finished.” He replied stubbornly.
“The others will finish for you. I have not seen you since yesterday and you were working none stop. Are you planning to stay until you faint from exhaustion?” She motioned him towards exist. “I have other healer’s agreement to take you home.” She hated to see the dark circles under his eyes and general melancholy.
Elrond was a lot more tired than he was willing to admit. He almost fell asleep on the way home. Celebrian walked him to their room making him sit down on the bed. She understood the bath and food would have to wait until he would wake up. She pulled the sleeping clothes out of the drawer and returned to her husband who was struggling with buttons. She smiled helping him change the attire. The half-elf immediately stretched out on the bed allowing the dreams to claim him. Celebrian slowly undid his braids and soothingly stroke the black hair. She ran fingers across the sleeping features removing the stressed frown. She doubted another thirty years would be enough to erase all hurts. Sad tears were shed in Valinor what should be a paradise to them.

Part twelve. Fall at the waterfall.

The sun shined brightly in the sky sending the warmth down on a cheerful elven company who settled for a picnic near a small waterfall.
“Glorfindel, would you please quit staring at Lady Celebrian so intently. Elgalad is far safer in her hands than in yours.” Eamane tugged on elf’s clothes so his feet folded underneath him and Glorfindel was forced to sit down on the grass where she-elf wrapped her hands around him and placed her chin on his shoulder. “I know he is. It’s just that…” The blond elf stopped guiltily. He loved the elfling dearly and worried no matter how much he trusted whoever held Elgalad. He would slay a throng of Balrog’s for his son’s safety.
Celebrian smiled at him in understanding. “I will return him to you shortly.” She promised.
The elfling oblivious to the worries around him happily cooed poking his head out of the blanket. Celebrian easily predicted that many hours will be spent in the future in search of this little elf when he learns to walk. She smoothed few unruly golden locks the baby had. She also felt guilty. The elfling should have being returned to his parents already but it was long since Celebrian held a baby. All her children have grown centuries ago and they didn’t want close parenting or caring, the two things she greatly missed. Arwen’s children were out of her reach. Elladan and Elrohir showed absolutely no interest even in mating, never mind having their own children somewhere in the next millennia.
“Some ‘honest’ bet that was! You wanted to have those lessons with Ada all along.” Elladan’s insulted cry resounded through the area reminding of the twins presence as Elladan realized he fell victim again to his brother’s devious planning. The older twin chased Elrohir in circles trying to drag him into the stream for soaking. At last he succeeded grabbing Elrohir’s shirt when his brother’s foot slipped into a crack between the slippery rocks and got stuck there. Unable to stop Elladan bumped into his twin tumbling both of them down. Rough hit against the rocky surface stunned both of them, especially Elrohir who was at the bottom. The younger twin gasped in pain.
Celebrian passed Elgalad to Glorfindel rushing to save her baby although that baby was a head taller than her. Elladan climbed off his brother helping Elrohir sit up. The elf seemed confused wondering how the absolutely perfect day cleaved into shreds of pain. Celebrian hugged him gently as he hissed when Elladan freed his ankle from the crack. “It may be broken.” He said miserably. The ankle swelled and reddened increasing in size before their eyes.
“Elladan go get your father.” Celebrian ordered calmly. She had to give him something to do so he would be distracted from dwelling on the guilt. Elladan swallowed a lump in his throat and ran as fast as he could to their house.

Part thirteen. A bit of aid.

Teary mist obscured his vision because he hurt his brother. Elladan would have gladly hurt himself instead. His breath came out as short gasps as he ran faster. “Father!” Elladan yelled storming into the home garden where he expected to find Elrond reading. A shattered glass sound coming from the house was an answer. Elladan in an instant skipped over few stairs following the sound to the small healing room. Green puddle with shreds of a broken glass container lay on the floor. Elladan saw his father dismayed by this sudden appearance. He missed the guilty expression the elder had. It did not occur to him that this is not the place where he expected to find his father.
From the sentence fragments spoken between the gasps Elrond managed to understand that Elrohir broke his ankle. “Elladan calm down.” Elrond handed his son a glass of water. “Elrohir will be fine. Everyone heals faster in Valinor than in the East.” The elder elf quickly regained the composure which affected his son enough for the elf to calm down. The puddle was left to be cleaned up later. Elrond picked up aid kit from one of the shelves. “Show me where everyone is.” He asked. Elladan nodded. He did not run back but walked quickly followed by Elrond, until they have reached the waterfall.
Elrohir already regained his senses and was attempting a smile. He looked better than his brother. Closer examination proved that the foot was bruised and sprained, not broken. “You will be able to walk again in a day or two.” Elrond told everyone. Although the hurt was not serious it dampened the mood. No one wanted to remain by the waterfall. Celebrian invited others to stay for lunch. She slowly walked with her husband behind all others. Elrohir holding on to his brother limped back to the house. Glorfindel walked close to them holding Elgalad with Eamane keeping her hand on his elbow.
Elrond wrapped his arm around Celebrian’s waist drawing her closer. He was not fooled like others by calm appearance which Celebrian forced because of her sons. She was terrified that they could get hurt. The incidents were easier for him to handle. When Celebrian sailed away to the West leaving them in Rivendell the twins set out with vengeance to destroy every dark creature on Arda. They often came home with a horrible injuries made by crude orc weapons. Elrond soon adapted emotional defence keeping his feelings locked away. He still cared but it helped him to temporarily stay impartial as a healer.
“Dearest, I love you.” Elrond thought to sooth her. Celebrian leaned closer showing she caught his thought. “I will not go near that waterfall again in the near future.” She thought. “That is a shame. It is a very nice waterfall and I was planning to prove to you that being near it cannot be so bad.” Elrond replied eager to distract her. The image of how he was planning to prove his point was vivid. Celebrian bit inside of her cheek to prevent herself from laughing. “You are impossible!” She told him. “That is why you love me.” Celebrian kissed his cheek. “For that and for much more.”

Part fourteen. Ride through the field.

“You are still brooding.” Gentle reprove came. Celebrian didn’t answer as Elrond laid a hand on her shoulder. “Elrohir is doing a fine job exploiting his brother while Elladan is willing to fetch him drinks and fluff the pillows. He said. Celebrian smiled leaning closer to him. “Come, there is something I wish to show you.” Intrigued she followed him into the yard where two stallions were waiting. The animals immediately snuggled to them nuzzling their pockets for treats. Elrond waved them away. “Not now. You can have all the sugar and apples you like after we returned from the ride.”
“We?” Celebrian pretended to pout. “So am volunteered into this?”
Elrond formally bowed and kissed the tips of her fingers. “Would lovely lady Celebrian grace this ride with her presence?”
“You may help me mount.” She curtseyed.
He grinned smugly lifting her into the saddle. “Do not leave without me.” Elrond warned noting the mischievous sparkle in her eyes.
Celebrian commanded the stallion into run as the answer and he followed keeping up with her easily for she could not gain much speed riding among the trees. There was no winding path as they made their way through the land avoiding stray branches and bushes until they have reached an open field with a line of forest far on the other side.
“I will race you to the other side.” Celebrian yelled finally picking up the desired speed. “The winner shall ask a small wish of another.” Elrond gladly obliged the request. He pursued his wife closely making certain he does not win.
Celebrian first reached the forest and turned with a smile to her husband. “I believe…” She began but the words froze on her lips sounding too familiar. She recalled the dream with fear. Celebrian glanced around nervously almost expecting the orcs to jump out at them.
“Congratulations are in order to the most beautiful rider of Valinor.” Elrond oblivious to the ghost kissed her. Celebrian tensed soon melting into the sweet touch. The wind tugged their hair playfully, the trees whispered in ancient language old as the earth and the birds sang celebrating life. Nothing happened.
Both elves slowly rode side by side absorbed in the silent unity. Then it happened, the stab of pain coursed through his chest the intensity of which coursed through him in suffocating waves ceasing the breathing. Celebrian noticed when Elrond’s mount slowed even more, uneasily stepping sideways as intelligent animal adjusted to the balance of the rider who was about to fall. Celebrian grabbed her husband’s hand trying to prevent the fall and then her fearful cry resounded through the woods. She felt no pulse.

Part fifteen. Suspicions.

Celebrian found comfort in listening to Elrond’s breathing. The deadly faint was replaced by sleep. She sat in an armchair near the bed looking at her husband’s pale features refusing to be removed from the room for several hours. When the twins came to replace her she motioned them away. “I wish to be here when you father wakes up.” She said and they had to concede.
The gallop back to her home with unconscious body forever imprinted in her memory. Then sending the twins to find the healers and waiting for their return. Elrohir first returned with Eamane who lived closest to them. Glorfindel’s wife had great healing talent but even she seemed at a loss. Several hours of examination were in vain. No injuries or anything out of the ordinary was found that could have caused the breathing to stop for a several short intervals. The best theory the healers came up with was a heart problem. Otherwise there was no explanation. “What happened?” She asked the room and thus asking the higher powers for she found no answer.
Elrond shifted uneasily. The dark eyelashes fluttered open and his eyes slowly focused on the surroundings stopping on Celebrian first with confusion, next with alarm at last with a guarded expression. Celebrian blinked away the tears some of which were from relief but others from fear and tension of the past several hours and for the uncertainty of the future. Silence fell between them as she struggled with new suspicion wanting to question him and fearful to hurt him farther by asking.
Elrond was the first to break the silence. “How long was I unconscious?”
“Past the entire day and into the evening.” Came immediate answer. “No one knows what caused this.”
He sighed.
“You knew something was wrong with you didn’t you?” Celebrian ventured to ask. A wave of guilt she felt from him proved the thought. “You kept this concealed. What is wrong with you?”
She felt a weak barrier surround his mind keeping her from reading his thoughts. Normally she would not insist. It could have easily harmed both when someone was unwilling to open their mind to another. Celebrian pushed her will against the barrier forcing her mind through it as his fears and hopes became evident. He was aware something was wrong with him soon after the twins came to Valinor. He secretly was looking for the cure. “The cure from what?” She asked daring to push farther, her world narrowed to one mind as she soon understood that he didn’t know. Only a dim suspicion lingered deep in his consciousness.

:) Finally an update. I got a little stuck. lol

Part sixteen. The will of Valar.

Before entering the serene majesty of Valinor’s golden wood Celebrian released her stallion. The twins along with Eamane and Glorfindel have sworn to secretly keep an eye on her husband meanwhile she travelled for the Elder’s advice. A loving smile touched her lips when she saw her mother walking among the trees. Where else the Lady of Light might be curing nostalgia of a distant fading realm that used to be her sanctuary. To the untrained eye both woods would have been the same but the energies surging through them were like a glimmering lake open to sunlight compared to the clear waters of a hidden pool.

Celebrian followed her mother, her mind open. Galadriel reached a glade where the land was turned like something was planted there then she sat down on the ground. Galadriel looked up at her daughter and stretched out a closed hand. When she opened it there was a golden seed in her palm which Celebrian recognised as the one from the home of her birth. “The first of these seeds used to grow on this soil until they were taken to the east and there they flourished and changed on the adopted land, by fate they were meant to return here many millennia later. Some of them will live here again others may not adopt. Mixing both together would make the woods more beautiful than ever.”

Celebrian kneeled beside her mother. She knew how to find the truth among the puzzles her mother weaved. “Just as Valar would do much to save Illuvatar’s children we would do much to avoid the preventable fading of the trees.”
Galadriel placed the seed in the ground stretching the process as long as possible. She did not wish to see the pain written in her child’s eyes. “It is not always possible to save all that we love. Even things bound to will and magic of Valar might eventually fail. Many of their enchantments bound to old Middle Earth are fading.”
Celebrian understood, she could barely believe in the truth of it but when the half-elven made their choices the immortality of that choice was bound to Middle Earth, the oath had never reached the shores of Valinor but that world was changing and so the spell was failing. She refused any consent of such end. “Why would Valar not recast the spell here? The trees of the Middle Earth Golden Wood might have faded but you brought their seeds here so they will survive. If the Valar do not wish to do help then what must we do?”
Galadriel feared the question. She feared to lose her daughter again before she could fully understand that she found her but she would not lie. “The Eldest elves held much knowledge of Valar. Their knowledge was passed on in scrolls and we left them underground in old libraries of Minas Tirith. Perhaps there you may find the answers you seek.
“Then someone must go there.” It was the only possible reply for Celebrian.
Galadriel shook her head. “The passage to Valinor is nearly closed forever. It will be gone within a year and we elves can never return on our own. Only the Valar might grant one leave. Leave such thoughts child.” She was clinging to hope that her daughter will remain with her.
Celebrian hugged her mother. The rays of sun fell through the canopy to caress both she-elves lost in their sadness and the trees released their healing energy to sooth them. “I cannot do so.” Celebrian whispered.

Hello Charis. I'm glad you are enjoying the story. :)

When I first began I thought Legolas and Gimli might still be wondering around ME but they are about to leave, so I mentioned somewhere roughly 30years since Elrond's arrival to Valinor. This story is mostly concentrated on Celebrian and Elrond. Legolas and Frodo however are not really the kind of individuals Elrond would spend a lot of time with as friends so I have not mentioned them so far. I can have a glimpse on them mayhaps in a chapter or two. How does Bilbo's 140th birthday sound? :o lol My heart wouldn't allow me to think anyone, even a mortal would die in Valinor. There is a reason why they are called undying lands. :p

Chapter seventeen. Desperate Plea.

“No? That cannot be your decision!” Elladan openly glared at the shimmering figure in front of him indifferent to disrespecting the Valar. He could not accept, no, for an answer after the undertaken trip to the stairs of Manwe’s palace to plead their case.
Shimmering light moved towards him glowing brighter but the stubborn elf maintained the stare only narrowing his eyes. “Your brother and you have overstayed the time assigned to you in Middle Earth as it is. You nearly failed to be accepted in Valinor. You cannot return to the mortal land. Otherwise you will perish there, no matter what the intentions are.”

Another cloud passed over the sun. Celebrian felt invisible chill rushing through her. She went to the mountains with her sons and now listened to the argument they could not win. The twins were the best choice to travel to Minas Tirith. They knew Middle Earth better than anyone. They had every skill to find the cure but Manwe declined. However he had not thrown them out yet. What was he waiting for? The twins could not go but who could? Her eyes clouded in memory of Middle Earth and her torture. Round, yellow eyes glowing at her from the cave’s darkness and excruciating pain. She screamed until her voice broke. Her oath was to never return to those days. In Valinor she was safe from ever experiencing that pain again. The kindness of memory granted her a degree of forgetfulness but could not completely erase the terror brought at that time. Would she dare return so close to the sight which forever claimed her with fear? Her throat felt perch dried. “What of me?” She asked quietly. “Manwe, you say my sons cannot go back because they have stayed there too long but I have left Middle Earth before my time.”
The glowing presence turned to her. “What of your fear?” Manwe interrupted her. “The orcs are not completely gone yet. Would you relive the torture?” The twins were certain his voice softened.
Celebrian’s lips thinned into bitter line. “I cannot think of a greater torture than watching someone I love fade from existence, even the torture experienced in the past pales in comparison.” The thoughts of a being before her were unreadable. Celebrian was desperate to convince him. “Please, allow me to go. You are the Vala but you have same feelings as I do. You also share existence with a beloved. If she was ill wouldn’t you do anything to save her? Even wild animals fiercely defend their wounded mate. Won’t you let me to do the same? I beg you, do not fail in justice.” She sobbed, the tears streamed down her face. The palace fell silent. The elven sensitive ears caught sounds of wind howling in the mountains.

They shuddered when they heard Valar speak. “The eagles will take you there.”
“This is madness. Mother you can’t! Not alone.” Elladan yelled.
“Silence!” The air about them swirled with a wind gust. “I will allow you another companion, not one of your sons. You have two weeks to prepare.”
With that astounded elves were shown outside where they grimly made their way towards mounts. Elrohir was first to speak. “So...” He reasoned. “who is going to tell Ada?”

*Gecko slips in after much reading hoping that noone has noticed her six page absence!* Ladypain, I must say that I am captivated by your story. I was taking the time to read through some older posts in here and I am glad that I stumbled onto this one. Your writing is excellent. I must admit that I was not even a slight fan of Elronds, favoring men to elves *hangs head in shame* but your portrayal of him is amazing. I'm finding myself liking him more and more! Good work for that! Your character development for each character is great and i can't wait to see what happens next!

I'm sorry for the long delay. The uni started and it has plenty of work in store. The updates are not going to be frequent. :( However I got this one done.

Chapter eighteen. Family Difficulties.

“Don’t you dare telling me that Celebrian went to visit her mother!” The outrage was slipping through the wall of self control. “I spoke with Rumil who saw Lady Galadriel less than two days ago and he knows nothing of my wife’s visit.” Elrond glared at the only elf who braved to stay. The other visitors disappeared as soon as they noticed Rumil and figured their deception was coming to an end. “I will not be deceived farther by all of you. Where is Celebrian?”
Erestor calmly accepted the rising emotional storm as well as order in the last question. “I refuse to be spoken to in such tone.” He parried. The situation needed to be discharged before it became worse. His friend’s anger tantrums were rare but scary even to those who witnessed them before.
Elrond paced the room in agitation. “Liars do not deserve a better tone. Either you tell me or I will start looking for her myself.”
“That will not be necessary.” Melodic voice interrupted them.
“Lady Celebrian. I am most pleased to acknowledge your return.” Erestor formally bowed to her with open relief. “I will leave you together.” He offered already outside the door. Celebrian turned around to close the door behind Erestor then slowly turned to face her husband choosing her line of behaviour. She hoped to find him in a different mood. Celebrian offered a loving smile. “So, the healer finally released you from bed. I am glad your health improved.” Sensing she will get no answer she had to speak farther. “Elrond, I’m sorry I did not tell you where I went but I was away for ten days. Are you not happy to see me? Why greet me with a scowl?” She prompted gently.
The soothing tone had no effect on angered elf. “Where were you?” Elrond demanded.
“Why don’t we sit down and I will tell you.” Celebrian attempted to guide her husband to the nearest couch where she could easier extinguish his anger with a few touches but he was refusing to cooperate.
“No. I’m will stay exactly where I am if you don’t mind.” He snapped.
Celebrian gave up on her efforts and stepped away from him. She explained in details the visit to Manwe and as she spoke ill mood descended onto the room. Elrond’s eyes became progressively darker until they were nearly black like a sea on foulest day. “You cannot go!” He said at the conclusion of her story.
Celebrian sighed in rising frustration. “I will not watch the illness slowly taking your strength.”
“I will not allow you to take that risk.” He returned angrily.
“Would you prefer to die?” Her tone was barely restrained.
“Yes!”
All her efforts were getting crushed by that resolved word. “I will go whether you want me or not.” She yelled mostly out of despair.
The poor remains of control were gone for him as well. “I will not let you go.”
They were both shouting. “You can’t order me what to do.” She countered fiercely.
“I will this time.”
“I will not listen.”
“I will tie you up and lock you in the room.”
“I will tell Glorfindel to tie you up and keep you in the room until I leave.”
Elrond gasped. It was very much in Glorfindel’s character to agree to something like that. “You wouldn’t dare!” He furiously marched out of the room slamming the door shut. A small crystal vase fell off the stand on the floor with a shattering sound. It broke in pieces.

I love it!!! But... who will go with her?

Hazards guesses... Glorfindel? Hmmm but he's a new daddy... he'd be a safe bet though. And he's got quite a lot invested in Elrond lol

Other than him I'm afraid I'm clueless...

Chapter nineteen

“Bilbo Baggins, I must say, this hobbit still have not forgotten how to cause mayhem.” Eamane caught unmistakable amusement in her husband’s voice. He loved nothing better than to see the Lords and Ladies of Valinor baffled.
“Indeed. He invited over 150 guests for his 150th birthday.” Elrond agreed. “His health has improved since his arrival. He seems younger.”
“The one who is young in spirit is always young. Just look at the way he organised this party.” Glorfindel pointed with a tip of the paddle towards an island in the middle of the lake before dunking the paddle back into the water in one fluid motion.
The island, surrounded by small fires and torches on a thin beach line, stood out against the night. The lights bravely danced in the lake’s darkened waters. Laughter and music played among the trees in middle of the island increasing as more boats arrived at their destination.
“Mithradir promised his spectacular fireworks.” Eamane joined their conversation. “Many old friends are going to come. I missed them.” Despite the modest size of Valinor she did not see many who came from Middle Earth as often as she wanted to.
“Glorfindel!” Elrond’s voice betrayed irritation after he reached out to pick up a paddle to help his friend steer the boat and found it missing. “What happened to the paddle?” No one knew what caused his illness but it didn’t prevent them from creating theories that often involved restricting him from doing something. Elrond found it irritable despite their good intentions.
“We must have left it on the shore.” Glorfindel faked innocence. “You can swim back there and get it if you want.” He attempted to tease his friend meanwhile rowing even faster towards the island.
Elrond prepared a sharp retort when distressed whimper stopped him. Elrond immediately focused on an elfling in his arms. “I’m sorry little one. My grumbling shouldn’t affect you.” He affectionately ruffled blond hair as blue eyes questionably probed him. Eamane beamed with pride looking at her son. Every elf they have met so far instantly fell under the charms of the little one. Elgalad with good nature accepted attention of all strangers. “This will be first celebration he attends to.” Elrond noted, his frown replaced by a smile. Sharing more peaceful conversation he didn’t notice how they reached the island and got out of the boat. Only when they got surrounded by other elves who wanted to see Elgalad did he return the elfling to his mother and moved away from the crowd.
Despite the magnificence of the party he did not feel like celebrating. Elrond wondered around lost, occasionally nodding hello to many of those who greeted him until he realised that his wonderings had to do with hoping to see Celebrian. They have not talked for over three days since the argument. Irritated he moved away from the celebration to walk among the trees where it was more peaceful. He sat down on a small secluded bench. Even the music changed matching his mood. From joyful and filled with life it became unsettling, very similar to the Call of the Sea the elves felt when they were called to Valinor. He nearly jumped when a light hand was placed on his shoulder. “Melleth. Despite my best attempt it is impossible to remain angry with you.” Celebrian joined him on the bench snuggling close. Elrond instantly hugged her. Their eyes met. Hurts of the distant past, regrets and sadness, she could read it all. “Over millennium have passed and yet I feel the pain all anew when you speak of leaving again. Cele, the link between us was broken when that ship taking you to the white shores entered Valinor waters. We were on the way back to Rivendell when I felt the sting. I had to dismount. I sat under a nearest tree motionless for hours. The other elves in the group made camp. Then we could not stay any longer since the orcs were always a threat. Glorfindel had to ride with me until we stopped for the night. I cannot imagine that break was easy for you either. At least then I knew you were taken to safety to be healed. Now you are leaving possibly to meet death.” Finger placed on his lips prevented him from speaking farther.
“We have shared that pain but I am willing to risk it again if it means finding a cure. Mithradir volunteered to accompany me. That must be a good sign.” Celebrian remained adamant.
“I suppose we cannot wish for a better escort.” Elrond agreed reluctantly. He captured her lips in a gentle kiss pouring all his love into it. Celebrian knew he did not come to peace with her decision. The kiss was a balm to their souls to cure past and future wounds, it was forgiveness that both so desperately needed.

Chapter twenty

A handsome elf not without disapproval watched as Lady Celebrian tiredly handed over her weapons to her sons. Their training for the day was over. Early in the morning Legolas came to spar with the twins not without surprise discovering their mother there. Celebrian insisted on training before her journey. The twins had no choice but to offer her support although like him they disapproved. Out of solidarity he gave them the space to practice and moved to another training circle however the location still allowed him to keep an eye on them. Legolas had no idea that Celebrian could wield weapons at all. Yet, she did. Judging by what he saw she had skill though it was rusty. He was among those who offered to be her companion. Gandalf however was a safer choice. During their meeting Legolas got an impression the old Maia was once more up to something that he was not telling about. Nevertheless he was uneasy with lovely she-elf undertaking difficult journey even under protection of a wizard. When she fought, the weapons made her seem even more fragile. She lived in the peace and safety of Valinor far too long. Could she even handle moving great distances on horseback through the countryside?
“Legolas, it is good to see you.” A voice interrupted his musings. Legolas turned jumping back from the unexpected source, instantly placing his knives in the defensive position but ready to strike. He somewhat relaxed when he saw the speaker.
“Lord Elrond.” He acknowledged politely. Legolas suspiciously viewed a pair of knives elf Lord was holding.
“I am sorry my sons could not practice with you. No doubt their skills are admirable but perhaps I can remedy?” Before Legolas could give his opinion on what he thought Elrond should not be doing he was attacked. The younger elf tried to hold back but he had a formidable opponent. Soon he was fighting full strength. Both elves fought with great skill and agility, fluidity of their movement reminded more of a dance. “Is that what you really think about my wife?” Not expecting the question Legolas nearly fumbled with his particularly successful attack. “Worry not. I do not need to touch anyone’s mind to know what they are thinking. I leave such tricks to my mother in law.” Elrond could easily read the accusing expression. Before the younger elf could answer a blade was knocked out of his hand and another tipped nearly pressed to his neck. Legolas capitulated gracefully. “This is not a modern technique. How did you do that?” He asked curiously.
“You are correct young one. Gil-galad was fond of this trick. Celebrian also knows it.” Legolas was certain he noticed a spark of amusement in the elf Lord. “If you ask nicely she may teach you. So, what do you think?”
“I believe Lord Elrond you went into a great deal of trouble to make a point.” The younger elf responded.
“The twins have a very good friend in you Legolas.” Elrond smiled. “Unfortunately your good senses and maturity do not seem to rub off on them. It was rather convenient for me to make that point however my aim was to check my skills. Neither Glorfindel nor twins would have allowed this. So, I thank you. Unless there is something you wish to know I will take my leave now.”
Legolas bowed. “I do not wish to keep you from conversation with Gandalf.” He nodded at the wizard who was standing at the edge of practice field without approaching. “Good day to you.”
Exchanging his knives for a bow Legolas moved to archery range. The elf, send few arrows to target with deadly precision. His thoughts were still on Celebrian although taking a new turn. He remembered when friction between Mirkwood and Rivendell grew so much that Lord Elrond with his wife had to visit his father to settle the dispute that could have cut off Mirkwood from negotiations with other elven realms. Thranduil was furious and threatened to throw them out by force if they did not leave at once. King’s anger had many elves covering in fear. What impacted Legolas was the serene smile with which Lady Celebrian answered his father. She smiled at the storm. The great beauty and fragility were a façade to the inner strength that was not easy to defeat. She was a daughter to great Lady Galadriel, the follower of Fingolfin who survived with his Host the terror of bitterest North, going across the Helcaraxe and cruel hills of ice, upon Feanor’s treachery. Similarly to her mother Celebrian could survive where many others would parish. She managed to heal after horrible torture and dared to return. There was fire in her that was never extinguished, he decided. Perhaps it was not a folly after all for her to go where her heart led her.

Chapter 21

Loving hand hovered above dark strands before reluctantly it was pulled back unwilling to disturb a sleeping elf. The feared hour of departure was upon her. Celebrian was conflicted whether to wake her husband, allow him to sleep or at least attempt to make him more comfortable before leaving.
Above all else they wanted to spend their remaining day together but it was not to be. Elrond was called away to the healing wards and when he returned home drained Celebrian already locked herself in the room where she needed to collect the items for the journey without distraction. She could not afford to be late for her ride. The half-elf fell asleep on the couch while staring into the fireplace flames and waiting for her. Elrond would wake up if she continued looking at him. Her decision made Celebrian leaned down placing a butterfly kiss on the sleeping elf’s lips. Her heart missed a beat seeing peace on the beloved features. Perhaps it was best to see him this way before leaving to be spared the agony of separation.
Stepping outside Celebrian took a deep breath refreshed by the cold evening breeze. The goodbyes to her sons and friends were said during the day. Trying not to brood she entered the stables where the white stallion stood ready for a brief journey. She patted the stallions nose getting only a soft whine in returned as intelligent animal understood it needed to be quiet but also felt approaching separation. The Valar did not wish to attract any attention to her departure. She was to ride out away from elven village to the other side of the forest where Gandalf would be waiting. Two Great Eagles were to take them safely to Middle Earth. Despite the twisted path Celebrian urged the mount to go faster keeping up the fast pace until she noticed two shadows. Riding closer she found what she was looking for. The two birds curiously looked at her but the wizard was not there. Disappointed she was about to make a mental remark about wizards who are often late when a beat of hoofs told her of approaching Maia. He was wrapped in a grey cloak, all she could see was the white beard. “Mithradir.” Celebrian called out to him softly. The Maia dismounted bowing to her. “It is time to go.” He said gruffly. One of the eagles extended one wing and Celebrian took it as invitation to climb on. Involuntarily she closed her eyes as the great bird unfolded wide wings creating a small dust storm at the take off. When Celebrian opened her eyes they were flying high above the darkened by the night land, only the rivers below them reflected with silver light. For the better or worse her adventure had begun.
