Hi Elf Girl. Many words are missing from the Sindarin language since it was never complete. So here's what I have for you. ;) You're welcome in Sindarin is "glasen nin" literally meaning my joy (my pleasure). This may not be accurate though. No doesn't truely exist in Sindarin, however, to negate a word "u-" is placed in front of a given verb. I think the word "lau" has been used to mean no, but I can't find confirmation on its accuracy. Yes is another word that doesn't exist, though, "mae" or "maer" is used to say well or fine like "that's fine" which is an affirmative reply. Hope this helps! ;)

This one may not be 100% correct due to certain words like "move" (rinc) only being nouns and not verbs. Since I don't know the stem for this I can only guess how it might be conjugated.

I recently started learning Sindari (month ago) and i have some problem atm with adjectives (im learning by this book pedin - edhelen Sindarin Course by Thorsten Renk)! well here is the problem in book ( on page 45) it says:

If an -i- occurs in the adjective, i-affection of the prefix needs to be carried out, changing the prefix to en-/ein-.
lint (swift)! ellint (very swift)
iaur (old)! einior (elder)
ring (cold)! edhring (freezing)

and I dont understand if prefix is en- or ein- why in these adjectives is obviously prefix e-; ellint --> prefix is e- and l is doubled? Or is it maybe m changed by some mutation? same in edhring --> prefix e and dh comes from nowhere !

Hi Gilard00. Sorry for the delay in response. I've been sicker than a dog. :( I'm finally feeling elven again. I have this course as well as the one given by CouncilofElrond.com and David Salo's book....so...let's see if we can answer your questions.

Ok, when it comes to verbs, adjectives following a noun, the 2nd word in a commound word, after a negative adverb or nouns that are objects of verbs, if -i- precedes the these, then you have a soft mutation. b becomes v, bl becomes vl, c becomes g, so on and so forth, based on the mutation chart for lenition. I tend to disagree with Thorsten Renk, based on the other materials I have studied in that you would rarely have -i- preceding an adjective. For example, "the green bow" would not be written "i galan cu" though you could write it that way I suppose but that is usually reserved for poetry. Calan is green and becomes mutated into galan, however it is usually written like this: "i gu galan" where the adjective follows the verb. In doing so though both the adjective and verb must follow the lenition pattern. For adjectives, lenition also occurs when following a noun AND the noun would be lenited too.

Now, in specific to your question and after reviewing page 45 I see what you are referring to. I believe what he is trying to get you to learn is basically a new set of rules. The word "i" becomes a prefix and in doing so it is no longer written as "i", but rather "en/ein" which is a genitival article rather than an article or pronoun. "En" also means "of the", rather than "i" which is just "the".

With that in mind you have to use the mixed mutation part of the chart to see what the lenition is. Based on my mutation chart, lint would indeed mutate to "el+lint=ellint". This lenition is called a mixed mutation. Words that trigger this are "er", "ben" "erin" "nan", "uin", "nin" and "en". So the next word in the list is iaur. In going with my chart that would simply have "ein+iaur=einiaur". Ok, the next one "ring" according to the chart would mutate to have "edh+ring=edhring". The difficult part that he doesn't mention is that sometimes "en" is used and sometimes "e-" is used. The mutation chart shows which consonants get "en" or "e-".

Finally a word about this course, "ein" is something that I've only seen in his course. I have not found it anywhere else so in regards to the question above: "iaur" I would have written it "eniaur" since I find no reference elsewhere to "ein".

Elf Girl... the plurals of nouns in Elvish can be a little tricky, especially in Sindarin;for example, most nouns there make their plural forms by altering certain vowels:the plural of "mellon", for instance, is "mellyn", the -o- in the singular changing to -y- to make it plural!In Quenya, things are a trifle easier; except from some irregular nouns, most nouns make their plural by either adding the ending -i or -r to the singular noun: "atan"=man becomes "atani"=men, "elda"=elf becomes "eldar"=elves, etc!:)

KajiRune,you got the first part of your phrase right, but you did get a bit confused with the pronoun endings(nin, -nye and ni).Nye is a sort of verb ending,so if you put that in the end of the verb, it technically means "I protect",so you could use ni, which is'me'!!:)Blue and Eagle do have two words each-Eagle just has a double stem, sor- and thor-,but blue does have 2 different words!;)Also, eala would be come possessive genitive, so it would change to 'ealo'-'Spirit of' the Blue Eagle, technically!So, your phrase would be:

'a' serves to introduce the imperative!:)

Thanks so much for helping me! My knowledge of Elven is very limited. Thank you for the translation. We have a font in MS Word and it's called tengwar annatar alt. I think it's the font from the ring. My fiance wants the phrase to fill the inside of the ring. I hope this phrase is long enough. It's kind of hard coming up with a nice inscription. Do you guys have any suggestions for other love phrases? I also like, "Haryalyë melmenya" and "Melinyel."

Tolkien used "[t]olothen Ethuil" for "the 8th [day] of Ethuil" (spring).
Let's imagine I need to say that "today is the twenty-first day of viressë" or even a shortest version like "viressë twenty-first".
How do I combine those words to write down this date?

Maybe "mîn-a-tatphaen viressë"?
What do you think? Is that understandable? Is that correct?

Well...you are using Quenya for Sindarin it seems. viressë is Quenya. In Sindarin there are never - ë <---dots over the letters like in Quenya.

Today in Sindarin is "sír". Unfortunately for Sindarin, the numbering scale is very small. In fact there is only 1-10 that is attested. I suppose you could say "sír no pae pae a min (no accent mark)" today is 10, 10 and 1 - thereby equally 21st, but its a stretch to do this.

"mîn-a-tatphaen viressë" - Min without the accent would be correct, "a" is correct, "tatphaen" is interesting but its a stretch. Going from pae to phae would be the proper mutation for certain. Can you explain how you arrived at "tat..."? You have me curious! lol This is an interesting challenge! veryhappy

Well, actually "tat-" is not my creation. I googled somewhere (maybe here? were a green site!) the name "talphae" for 20. But when asking for help a sindarin speaker asked me: where does this prefix "tal-" come from?
So he proposed use the T instead of L. Maybe because the phonetical value for T is closer to D.
I don't know if the "consonant meeting" (is that right? [pt-"encontro consonantal"]) "taDPHae" is possible in sindarin. Is it?

But what do you think, Laurelin, about that thing of speak the number backwards?
If we write down this text using tengwar numerals, the greatest value would be on the right and the lower value on the left, right?
Some people say that is possible to assume that we must also speak first the lower value and then the higher value. Do you agree with this? It seems confuse to me, but seems to make sense either..

Well...after doing some research it seems that they lean towards the greatest value on the left and the lower on the right. The pity about Sindarin is that its not near complete enough to speak or write as one would like. So we're left with educated guesses at best. Given the linguists out there that are far more talented than I am, I will follow their lead at do the greater value left and lesser value to the right. ;) For poetic purposes you could change the order though. :p

Sindarin - used in the films
Quenya - used a little in the films, but mainly considered high elvish sort of like Latin is to English/Spanish/etc.

Incidentally, Quenya is more "complete" whereas Sindarin was never finished as a language so it might require us to reword your sentences a bit to make them work.

Hi Arwen! Sorry for the delay. I was finishing final exams. Phew! lol

Ok, your first request is a bit of a puzzle. Wingwaith isn't a word. However, I found a website that had a Lord of the Rings parody where one character was talking like Elmer Fudd (Warner Brothers cartoon character - Wascally Wabbit for example instead of rascally rabbit. Hence Wingwaith could be Ringwraith!). There are no words beginning with "W" in Sindarin so I'm at a loss to what wingwaith could mean. There are a few errors but I think I've figured out the meaning with wingwaith removed from the sentence. With it in the sentence...I wrote what it could possibly mean below.

Now, having said that - this is what I've come up with:
"Law hir nîn, û dolen i rîw anirach nuin gwannath lin"
"No my lord, it is no secret that under the surface you desire your own death"

With Wingwaith:
"No my lord, it is no secret that under the surface you desire your wingwaith's death"

So your latest request...are you wanting it translated into Sindarin? I won't be able to translate it word for word since sadly sindarin is lacking many words but I can come close. I came here once or twice in the past asking for help, and you, guys, were so amazing helping me, that, I´m back with some important requests that I´d like see translated to sindarin.
And I´m telling you that it´s important, ´cause, after two years without write a single line of my fanfiction :( , I restared the story and I would be glad if some phrases could appear in sindarin.

(I wonder if the accent over the first "e" will cause difficulty? Im not extremly picky so it could always be left out)

Hi Charlotte and welcome to WotR! Yes, we can do the tengwar for you. ;) Would you like the tengwar to look like the script on the "one ring" or some other variety? And yes, we could transcribe English or any other language into tengwar. Um, with other languages I would need to know how it is pronounced since tengwar is actually a phonetic writing style. The accent may or may not be a worry as it may or may not be needed in Sindarin. If you know how to pronounce "Thèid seo seachad cuideachd" then I could give it a go if you like. ;) Let me know!

Hi, I'm new here and intending to get a tattoo as well.
I have done research on the various languages and decided to settle on Quenya but written in Tengwar.

I tried various translations on my own and have so many variations that I do not know which is the correct one. I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light which translation to use.

The phrase I want to translate is 'Love Myself' the meaning is a reminder to, well, love myself (not in the egoistical way, just a reminder to treat myself better)

Some variations I have translated are:

méla-inyë (Loving I-in which the 'a' after the word love means an on-going verb and inye is a pronoun 'I')

méla-immo (immo is 'herself')

méla-amin (amin appears to be another variation of 'I')

There are other variations of the word 'I' but does not necessarily mean 'myself' so that's why I'm so confused.

Hello, everyone and sorry for the terrible delay getting back to you; I had some Firewall issues that didn't even let me access the site...luckily, all fixed now!:)

Schnoodle, Eldarion and Erehwon...nearly done with your texts, expect them posted tomorrow-still working a bit on the translation,since both Sindarin and Quenya are not finished languages, so you have to combine and recombine words to make the meaning you intend sometimes!

Jessedeke...your research is pretty nicely don,e save for one thing: méla is pretty much the Quenya equivalent for the English Present Continuous, therefore means pretty much "I am loving"; I'd go for Simple Present, since " Love Myself" is a general value, isn't it?:)

So...my suggestion for you:

I have a phrase I need translated for a book I am writing. Any form of elvish will do, as long as you can supply me with the dialect and even possibly the type of elves who would speak it. for a little context, the more they hate humans, the better. the phrase is

"Your destiny lies with the Heirs of the Dagger.
Rest now, my son, for your dawn soon breaks."

Also, if you are able to save me a little extra work by providing me with a .JPG image of the phrase in the actual elven text, I will include your name (English, or Elvish, your choice) in the credits for this novel. I also may call upon you again for further assistance in the same regard.

I hope to release the first in this series sometime later this year. I hope if you pick up a copy, you enjoy it, and that you elvish folk are the first to unravel all my little secrets ;)

My apologies for the repeated back quotes, but I've continued to come up with new ideas for this. (and there seems to be a timer on the "edit post" ability)
Anyways, this might be too much to ask, but should there be a graphics wizard amongst you that would be able to take this quote,

"Your destiny lies with the Heirs of the Dagger.

translate it to English and make a Tengwar of it. in the story it will be read off a crumpled piece of parchment, I would like to include a picture of said crumpled parchment so that those who can speak elvish can unlock a hint as to a later plot twist. if the Tengwar could be graphically enhanced to appear to be on a crumpled piece of parchment, that would be ideal. if not, just the Tengwar would be excellent, and I will figure out the graphical enhancements at a later time. Thank you!
