I thought this would be fun... every day I will post a new phrase written in Elvish that you can use in everyday life.

I will also post the translation and the pronuciation.

My first one is Sindarin birthday wish. If you know some one who is having a birthday soon, and they like Elvish, this would be great to put on a card for him or her. (All the better if you know how to write in the Tengwar!)

Actually I don't get it all from just one website. I don't even know if there is website that has all the Elvish words! So I find them on many different ones, then I put them all on my own list. But I make up these phrases myself.

I personally love languages of all kinds...
naturally Elvish is top on the list! though I am not so great at it.

The only things I know how to say are from the movie; ie "Hear my voice," "I desire," "I understand," "Long years have passed," &t.

But these are phrases I use a lot! (It drives my family crazy. They also love LOTR--who doesn't--but they are not obsessed--unlike me!!)

Remember: When speaking Elvish ALWAYS role the R's! No matter if it is at the begining, middle or end of a word.

I don't know of any word for eat in Sindarin. I know there is one in Quenya. I'll try to translate it, but I know this is a very crude attempt! I am more used to Sindarin.

While I was sifting through my stack of Elvish word lists and dictionaries just now I came across the Sindarin word for "eat". So here is the above phrase in Sindarin:

Hû vant han nîn [hoo vant han neen]
(my dog ate it)

Merin auta. (MEH-rin OW-tah) ("ow" pronounced as in "how")

I'm really not certain about the verb tense that would equate to the word "could," but I'd imagine (assuming that you mean "be allowed to" by "could) that it would be the past tense of the concept "to be allowed"......so that's how I'm basing this translation:

"I wish I was allowed to leave," or "I wish I could leave."
Merin lertanen auta. (MEH-rin LEHR-tah-nen OW-tah) ("ow" pronounced as in "how")

That's as far as the known Sindarin numbers go. I believe the Quenya numbers go to twelve.

Ancalimë does mean "brightest" in Quenya....I assumed you knew that, and that's why you chose that name! Technically, it means brightest in the plural sense. ;) "Ancalima" would be singular, like "brightest star," and "ancalimë" would be plural, like "brightest stars" (in Quenya, the adjective agrees in number with the noun, so if the noun is plural, the adjective would be too).

Actually, tar- is not a prefix meaning ruler -- it means "high" or "noble."

According to the Appendix in the Silmarillion, it was often used as a prefix in the Quenya names of Númenórean kings. The feminine word tári, meaning queen, is actually derived from that prefix.

"Brightest Queen" would best be translated as Ancalimatári. But it's quite all right, when I look at your name I just picture it as a "shortened" version of tári. ;)


As for the "plural" issue....it's not a problem. The ending -a of many Quenya adjectives (such as ancalima) is often changed to an -ë in feminine names.

Hi, Bele, I did answer you about how to say "yes" in Sindarin a couple posts ago. There is no word in Sindarin for "no" that I am aware of. I suppose you could use the word for "stop" which is "daro". (By the way, if anyone else knows the Sindarin word for "no" I would be happy to know it!)

I finally found the Sindarin word for "no"! :hooray: :hooray: :hooray:

It is "law" [pronounced roughly low (rhymes with "cow") though a more correct pronunciation would be to say the English word "law" only pronouce the "w" at the end. Is that confusing enough?


I don't know what the Quenya words for "please" and "thank you" are, but in Sindarin "thank you" is "hannad le" [HAN-nad leh]

There is no deffinate word in Sidndarin for "yes". Though what most people do is to just say (ironicly) "no" which literally means "it is so". This is the imperitive form though. A more passive form would be "nâ".

Ok Elemmîrë, I have your phrases translated into Sindarin. You'll have to get the Quenya from Isiltári.

What is the difference between Sindarin and Quenya?? besides the fact that Sindarin is an incomplete language................

well... theres a thread here (http://www.warofthering.net/forums/vbulletin225/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1203) that explains the structural differences between them. if you want to know generally, Quenya isn't used in the third age. It is a high tongue which was banned because the speakers committed a high crime in the first age. People commonly compare it to Latin. Sindarin is the language used in the movie... the language that most people mean when they say 'elvish'. and like you said, Quenya is more complete because it came first, and basically Sindarin is an ... evolved Quenya.

maybe Wil is still on and she can help you more though. Or correct me, goodness knows i dont know everything (but at least i know almost everything :p)
