Oh my god! I laughed soooooo much when they started fighting and they were being hit with a stick by the other one..which made then even more angry... lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

I really llike seeing Bilbo go from a rather pathetic little guy to a downright warrior, but that covers a lot of the book, so if I had to choose one part it would be the Riddles in the Dark ordeal, because I think it was his turning point.

Riddles in the Dark.

I liked the scenes with Bilbo and Smaug bantering back and forth trying to figure each other out. They spoke in riddles and clues and you had to read between the lines. I had to admire the cunning and intelligence of Smaug and was proud the Bilbo could handle himself well against the old worm.

I have to agree SR ... the word game with Smaug was great! Isn't it funny how Tolkien used this device twice in the story (possibly more ... it's been a while since I've excavated the Hobbit). Was the prominent use of this due to the fact that many British kids entertained themselves likewise at the time? Need some " 'cross the pond " insight! ;)

perhaps...but id be inclined to think it was more JRRs profound love of language that made him use word games so prominantly....just a thought...;)

Suppose I should introduce myself first: I am Lady Rowena, a bard who has travelled many countries and worlds. My journeys have finally lead me here, were I can join in on discussions with good folk.
My favourite scene would be when Bilbo gets to the Trolls ("...What's a burahobbit?") and the riddles in the dark. I do get a little annoyed by all those dwarves sometimes though (no offence to any present dwarves by no means.)
Hail thee (this is my first post on this board, i hope the computer doesn't explode.)

Welcome Lady Rowena! You really should post in the Welcome Forum so that everyone can greet you.:)
Oh, I have so many favorite parts it's hard to choose! I like when they all escape from Mirkwood through the barrels, and also the party at the beginning. I guess my favorite though is the Battle of Five Armies.

The Arkenstone!!
Yes, I like Bilbo's logic 'well, I am a theif after all' or something like that.
One of my favourites is the Barrel scene as well. I've got the BBC recording of the Hobbit and that scene is so funny on it.

Love the whole book, but one of my favorite parts is when Bilbo discovers the keyhole that leads into Smaugs lair. Also like the opening chapter with Gandalf leaving his mark upon Bilbo's door. ;)

Actually, Tolkien's use of riddles was influenced by his knowledge of Nordic mythology. The use of the riddle was a literary device used by Icelandic skalds to create obstacles for their heroes to overcome. In addition, the riddle as an obstacle device can be found in many worldwide mythologies of different cultures. Tolkien was well aware of the riddle, hence, his use of it in The Hobbit.

I think that in the story the hobbit my most favorite part was probably the riddles in the dark ordeal because not only was this a turning point but it was also fun to try and guess the answer for yourself

i liked many parts of the book. some of my more favorite are the 3 trolls: Roast Mutton, and the spiders, and of course Riddles in the Dark. Okay, i guess that's my favorite... Riddles in the Dark :)

Dwarf Toast: May the hair on your toes never fall out!
Smaug: You have nice manners, for a theif and a liar.
Thorin: If more of us valued your ways, food & cheer above hoarded goldi, it would be a merrier world.

Every chapter! 'the hobbit' is soooo great! and yet so different from LotR somehow... If I have to say some chapters it would be the one with the trolls and 'riddles in the dark'. I love my copy of 'The hobbit' also. the original(new print) cover by JRRT and his pictures inside. both colour and black/white...

I agree, Riddles in the Dark is one of the best scenes. I would love to see how it would transfered into a movie.

Some folk don't like how Gimly was used as comic relief in TT but I think it's a spill-over from The Hobbit.
I like Bilbo's recognition of his draw to adventure: "There is a magic in that music and it moves through me. To go and see the great mountains and hear the pinetrees and waterfalls and wear a swordinstead of a walking stick - just once."
Dwarf toast: "May the hair on your toes never fall out!"
Thorin (after Smaug is killed): "If more of us valued your ways, food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
The whole Smaug scene is generally a favorite!

There's also a scene when Gandalf says something to Bilbo like, "Surely you don't think all your escapades and adventures have happened merely by luck? That is an awfully heavy load for just one to bear! You are, indeed, but one little Hobbit afterall."
Very humbling, ........and foreshadowing.

I love the discussions between Bilbo and Smaug.... and Bilbo fighting the Mirkwood spiders: it showed the warrior in the little hobbit.

If we are talking the book, I like The Clouds Burst. If we are talking the animated movie, I like Out of the Frying-pan into the Fire because of the funky way they sang the '15 birds' song.

No big surprise that my favourite is the Riddles in the Dark, but now that I read through here (and am just in the beginning of re-reading The Hobbit) I recall how good the part is where Bilbo and Smaug are talking. I also get a good chuckle at William, Bert and Tom :)

Anything with elves, especially Elrond... cuz talking about him can lead to talking about Maglor...
And seriously, we get to see elves in an.... er.... different light.
Any thoughts on Bilbo's usage of "old" or "young" when talking about elves?

My favorite part of the book was the trip through Mirwood, truly spooky. I already hated spiders, but this just reinfoced my beliefs that they are evil. My favorite scene though is when Bard shoots Smaug.

Those spiders freaked me out as well. Spiders = evil
Spiders that can think for themselves = very evil

Well we have to admit that JRR knew how to use people's fears in his works... and it's hardly just the spiders...
The spiders actually made me laugh... esp as I'm not quite scared of them, it was a great part nevertheless
My fave has to be the escape of the dwarves from king Thranduil's palace - dwarves in barrels, drunken elves and "thag you very buch" hobbit.... priceless lol
Lady Melanie
October 12th,2003, 06:13 PM
Shame. The poor dwarves. Can you imagine being trapped in a barrel and floating down a river for at least one nightsquinchy
Lasgalen
October 13th,2003, 12:32 AM
Sounds like fun to me. As long as my barrel had a nice smell, like apples instead of fish.

I would prefer it if my barrel had no smell at all.

So you could float down the river drunk? Not a bad idea! It would have to be some pretty strong wine though. Although the cook did pass out on it!:guzzle:

Every part with Gandalf. He's so great in that book! But, if I have to choose a certain part . . . probably the whole thing with Gollum - the riddles in the dark, and then following him down the tunnel. I love Gollum, and it makes me cry, and I always end up hating Bilbo for a while after reading that part.
I also love it when Bilbo goes down the tunnel to Smaug's lair. "It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait." That was cool. Tolkien's a genius.

I love all the parts with the eagles. And oh yes, the slaying of Smaug was fantastic. MIrkwood was great; and Bilbo's cleverness as he rescued the dwarves from Thranduil's place was wonderful as well. Oh yeah, and . . . oh bother, I guess I just liked the whole book!

Yes! That's one of my most favourite lines in all of Tokien's literature: "The Eagles are coming!"
I know this doesn't pertain to the Hobbit, but I was extremely pleased that the eagles showed up at the Black Gate in the theatrical RotK to dispatch the Nazgul. Wonderful scene! I think PJ gave the line to Pippin . . . "The Eagles are coming!" It was an absolutely marvelous sequence where the eagles engaged the fell beasts in aerial combat; not to mention one of my most favourite parts of the movie.
Lady Melanie
December 23rd,2003, 10:21 PM
I thought that Pip had that line in the book but I just checked and in the book it is Gandalf who shouted "The eagles are coming"
I love the reference that Tolkien has to the Hobbit by putting this line in LOTR. The scene in ROTK where Pip shouts the eagles are coming was a really good scene. Great CGI

Hmm 3 scenes that first come to mymind...
That gotta be:
The Trolls starting to argue with themselves (with the help of Gandalf)
Bilbo sneaking around in Thranduils Halls and finally getting the
dwarves out of there.
And when the Eagles and Beorn comes to help with the battle
of the five armys.
After that the Riddles in the Dark, word game with smaug oh &
the unexpected "party" in the beginning. lol all come in on Forth place ;)

Let's see...
*The riddles in the dark
*"Fifteen birds in five fir trees"
*At Beorn's house
*Bilbo fighting the spiders of Mirkwood
*Bilbo talking to Smaug
*All other scenes with Smaug
*Bilbo giving the Arkenstone away
... and all the other scenes, too. It's so hard to pick a favourite (or even seven favourites) if I like the whole book, from cover to cover. :)

I've always loved the end of the book when Gandalf says something like "I'm very fond of you Bilbo, but you are after all, only one very small person in this big world." I don't really have a favorite scene...I love the whole book!

August 30th,2004, 08:10 PM
Riddles in the Dark. :gollum: That scene is somewhat scary in the fact that Gollum would actually follow the rules... you'd think he'd just cheat and eat Bilbo.
Also, when they first meet the elves... "Tra La La Lalley, down in the Valley"... I love that whole scene.
