Do you know anything interesting about the filming of the trilogy? Do you remember anything from the dvd audio commentaries? Share the fun facts here!!!
Here's a starter: The flooding of Isengard wasn't planned at all during principal shooting, PJ cooked it all up during post production. They didn't have any footage of Saruman for that scene, so he used some that was for part three. When Saruman turns his head and looks shocked to the left (the wave is comming at his tower), he was actually turning to say something to Wormtongue. (Obviously, the same shots didn't make it to the actual scene with Saruman in Rotk EE.)

Speaking of fun-if you play the commentary with PJ, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens, you'll have a lot of fun! PJ has a cameo in Helm's Deep, where he throws a spear. ON the commenatry, PJ claims that thanks to him, the good guys won the battle. He says that he trew the spear in to a Uruk commander, and since he died the Uruks were lost. Of course, he had to cut the movie so it looks like Aragorn is the hero. Too bad for PJ. (Fran and Phillipa were laughing at him...)

I thought it was so cool  to learn they wrote the code for fire :flamer: with the scene of the Balrog! No one else had yet mastered a real enough looking flame in CG before! Those guys were simply Brilliant!

They are sure cool! There are some things in the movie that are CG and I didn't konw at all before I watched the documentaries, because they are so realistic. Like on the bridge of Khazad-dum, when all the Fellowship are running away from the balrog, that shot is completely CG.

There is a car in the FoTR when Sam and Frodo are leaving the Shire. Not very good and I didn't notice it but it is true

I've heard about this one, but it really isn't very visible.

The Mouth of Sauron is very interesting. The guy who played him starred in Mad Max 2, and everyone was looking forward to working with him. He was kinda upset that he won't be visible in the movie (with the helmet and make up).
PJ wasn't happy about the look of the mouth, so they tried to flip it vertically, but in the end, they enlarged it 200% on the computer.
Can't imagine a vertical mouth? Go see http://www.warofthering.net/photoforum/showphoto.php?photo=10358&size=big&sort=1&cat=500

Yesterday, I watched a part of Rotk with the cast audio commentary, and with shock I learnt that the voice of the Witchking was made by Andy Serkis!
And another thing: When Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arrive to the Pellenor fields on the ship, and they jump out before the Orcs, Legolas is digital. Orlando said he doesn't remember shooting the jumping out of the ship, and that that's his digital double.

Liv Tyler's father (rock legend Steven Tyler of Aerosmith) fell asleep when he saw FoTR.
When Aragorn's coronation was first filmed, the crown slipped right over Viggo's brow, over his face, and fell down to his shoulders. "And there was just this horrible silence," says Jasmine Watson, LOTR's jeweller. "My initial head measurement that I had taken from Viggo was drastically wrong."

This interested me the most being a computer geek and all lol when the were using the computer graphics software massive that they used for the large scale battles (start of LotR FotR and so on helms deep) when the made all the little digital people attack eachother apparently 2 of the little people ran away on fear of there own accord!!!!! I never thought u could give a computer fear before!!! lol

In the Fotr scene when Frodo is leaving in the boat at the end of the movie, Sam rushes into the water and goes right to the bottom. The underwater shots are not underwater at all. Sean Astin was in a studio, and they were using big air fans to make his clothes and hair "float". The air bubbles coming out of his nose are digital.

Did you guys see the in the ROTK EE when Viggo snogs Billy? roflmao (snogs...I guess I got that from you Brittish folk...Americans never say it, but I think it sounds funny...I said it the other day, and my mom was like "what?". lol) It was really funny...everyone here has probly already seen it...Sean Astin and the actress who plays Rosie were doing the wedding scene, they were supposed to kiss, and then look at their "fellow hobbits", but it just wasn't working out, so Viggo got Billy from the trailer...and the rest is LOTR history, and the scene better. lol
That whole part, Cameras in Middle-Earth, was really great. Made me cry. mecry

Yup..."Cameras in Middle-Earth" it's called.

Thank for that, JemFinch. I completely forgot about it.
A new fact about Andy Serkis. Remember the scene in TTT, when the Uruks and Orcs argue about eating Merry and Pippin (just before the Rohirrim come; infront of Fangorn)? All the Orc/Uruk-hai voices are done by Serkis.

I didn't have much time to watch any part of LotR with the audio commentary last week, so here's only a mild fun fact:
Dominic Monaghan was alergic to his elven cloak (the one he got in Lothlorien). :merry:

The "Go home" scene in RotK was shot a year apart. They first shot Sean in that scene, but they didn't have a chance to shoot Elijah's part until a year later. lol

I don't understand how was PJ able to make such grrrrreat movies wit a chaos like that. Imagine they would loose the footage after the year!

I know! PJ and the whole crew was just amazing!! I applaude them all. :hooray:

April 8th,2005, 11:09 PM
Yes, they were amazing, but during a hectic filming like that, things like this happen>
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Merry and Pippin were bound when taken by the Uruk-hai, and the bonds weren't cut until after they managed to escape during the fight. Yet, when the horse almost crashed down on Pippin, he had his arms spread out up near his face, not bound, even though they weren't cut until later. In the next shot, his hands are bound again. :nono:

Ya, that drives me crazy when I see it. :) Also, in RotK...and during the "Go home" scene again, when Gollum puts the crumbs on Sam's shoulder...one minute they're there, the next, they're gone...and then they're back again. There and back again...haha............ :mmmm:
