John Howe or Alan Lee?

Which artist's work to do you prefer and why?

Although I like Howe's work, I prefer Lee's.

I guess it's because his paintings of the characters and of the landscapes of Middle Earth look so hypnotic.

Yet that's just my opinion.

Lee for sure. it just conforms more to my initial impressions upon reading the books. and he helped witht he movie most you know

i like them both for different reasons, but i must say my overall favourite is John Howe. he does the best action scenes, they're so beautiful

Wow - tough call - I personally identify with Lee's but I love the passion and gusto of Howe's pieces. Howe's work is very powerful, while the work of Lee is very solemn. It has a quiet solitude and an elegance to every piece. I also feel I can truly touch Lee's work - like these are real people he is illustrating, not characters of high fantasy. This is something I try to achieve in my own work and admire in the work of others.
