I was wondering what peoples favorite type of weapon is and what their favorite style of armour is, both LOTR and historical. I personaly like the longsword and high Gothic plate as well as the Second Age Elven armour and sword. :)

I am facinated by the middle ages so it will be a bit difficult to choose...
LOTR movies: 2 elvish knives (like the one Legolas has), bows and arrows
historical: A longsword, bows and arrows
:fight: :archer:

this is a strange topic for a thread :) , but... well... my favorite weapon is my automatic pocket knife (just for self-defence, I swear :) ), and my original Victorinox pocket knife my dad gave me. I like swords, too; but I am a nice girl. Really.

August 28th,2005, 07:11 AM
Yeah:rolleyes: all nice girls carry around automatic pocket knives:grin: I try to be a nice girl...but I think I get more strength with my hands then I do with any other weapon...minus my tongue...that's fatal.:o

Elfdaughter
October 6th,2005, 08:28 PM
A Gladius, I beleive is a short sword, similar to the style the Romans used...

unless I'm completely mistaken....;)

The Ring doesn't count!! lol!

Laurelin
October 6th,2005, 09:58 PM
ED, you are correct! ;) And I do think the ring counts...if you're bold enough to try it. lol

I am actually a practitioner of sai. They are my favourite weapon, but next to them, either a staff, spear or bow is good for me.

Laurelin
October 9th,2005, 04:44 PM
Sai's are cool! I'd love to learn that art, though I'm afraid I'd poke my own eye out accidentally. :p lol

Me too! Alas, there are days where learning to shoot left handed might come in handy. :p *is working on that* ;)

Cuiel Rilwen

I always shoot with both eyes open...you see twice as much that way! lol

Well I once dropped my Sai on my foot, lucky it was only the prong that hit it or I would have been sitting in the emergency room. lol But once you get the hang of Sai, they get really easy. Has anyone seen Elektra or Daredevil? I have mastered all of her Sai moves from both movies. I often use the movies to train to.

Elfdaughter
October 10th,2005, 04:34 AM
Using a movie to train is not really the best way. Too often I watched fencing scenes and flinched - 'hollywood' fighting, I call it. NO WAY would you do half those moves in reality, they leave you a) off balance, or b) wide open for a counter attack. Once you get trained into a bad habit, it's virtualy impossible to break. Also, training from a movie doesn't give you the best feedback...you;ve got no-one to tell you how your stance is, where your sword's going, or how your footwork s. Go onto a field of battle using techniques you picked up from a film and not only are you likely to be sent off by the marshal, you'll be carried off by an ambulance stretcher. I strongly STRONGLY advise against that.

Unless the actors are using well-known techniques (Aragorn's sword twirl before the battle of Helm's Deep), steer well clear of film moves. Even then, get someone who knows exactly what they're doing to teach you.

Stormcrow
October 10th,2005, 01:51 PM
Yes, but the thing with Sai is that they are used for twirling and flipping when fighting. Elektra is a perfect example of fine Sai twirling. Have you seen Daredevil? There is a scene in that movie where Elektra is training in her house with sandbags before her mission of revenge, she starts of with a decorative Sai series of twirls. And the gets into the sandbag attacks. I know enough about Sai to know that Elektra is a perfect example of how they should be used, that is why I follow her twirls and quick attacks to build up my speed and power, and of coarse my ability to twirl the Sai! :) I also use the scene from The Mummy Returns, in which Anak-Su-Namun and Nefertiri have a one on one with Sai. Both movies show excellent use of Sai, hence I use them to build my skill. I can always get a trainer to teach me the actual hardcore style martial arts of the Sai, but right now I mainly work on twirling, speed and technique. Which are all perfectly demonstrated in both films. I have mastered all of the moves from both movies, because I have been using Sai for quite some time, and I also have learnt how to throw then effectively! Sai is a very elegant art, it has many levels and flaws. I have gathered my skills from many different areas such as movies, books and DVD's based on training you. I see learning moves from movies as an effective place to start, because it was what got me familiar with them to begin with. I am now very comfortable with holding my sai and using them for attacking. I admit, certain fighting scenes in Daredevil and Elektra aren't used in common fights, but the training scene in Daredevil is my main focus. It is a perfect example of Sai usage, and it has taught me so much. As has Elektra in various sections of her own movie as well as certain scenes in DD. I find the moves she uses in the movie very accurate to the actual usage, because she was trained by professionals for the fight scenes, she trained for three months with Sai before doing the scenes. She knows what she is doing and the films are accurate, trust me. You should watch them. ;) Without learning from these movies, I would not be as proficient as I am with Sai today.

Yes, I have seen Daredevil, and I still stand by what I say. You cannot fully trian by picking thisngs up from movies. Even if the actor is fully trained, you need someone there to go through each movement, and each stance to ensure you are doing it correctly. You can gather a lot of skills from them, sure, but without a qualified instructor to watch you go through each move, you'l never know if you're doing it right. Books, DVDs, films...they're a good place to start, yes - but ALWAYS go through the moves with someone else, who knows what they're doing. I have to say, I don't fight Sai...this is from broadsword and fencing experience, and this is me speaking as a marshal - I've seen too many near-injuries from newbies who have trained themselves by books and films etc.

I don't know if, in Sai, you fight each other...I can just hope you don't.

Stormcrow

:nono:

Of coarse I don't fight with them. I only pick up moves from them. I would definitely get a proper trainer before even considering entering competitions! lol

I currently practice Sai for leisure, not for full on hardcore fight training, although I do like to have a bit of a tarin outside sometimes. I am not into fighting with them, yet! lol When I begin to fight others, I will get trained before-hand, I wouldn't just use moves from movies, hell no! So, I am all set, for now. I have mastered all possible twirls, flips and spins, so my speed and accuracy is mastered, I just need to learn how to actually FIGHT with them. lol

So, what are your other favourite types of weapon Elf Daughter? I also like the staff, it is a cool wepaon for fighting with. Especially the way Gandalf combines his sword and staff attacks into more advanced moves, he is such an awesome fighter.

Laurelin
October 10th,2005, 04:25 PM
Phew! I was getting worried about the two of you. ;) I like the staff too. Gandalf rocks! Bows and katana's are my favorite though. ;) I picked up a Yumi bow in Japan this year.

Aw, don't get worried, Laur! I jst get concerned when people say they're learning things from films...

Bows, broadswords and rapiers!

Stormcrow
October 11th,2005, 09:05 AM
There is nothing wrong with learning things from films, it is actually quite beneficial. As long as you don't try and use them in real fights (only in some cases).

The Bo Stick is a very cool weapon. Gandalfs staff swings in ROTK were awesome. I have mastered those too! Yay!

Oh, don't freak out Elf Daughter, those moves are good enough to use in a real staff fight, it given the opportunity.

 The sai is a very cool weapon, Stormcrow - what form do you practice? So now, what Middle-Earth weapon would you like to wield?

And yes, warringers, the gladius is a roman short sword, used mainly for thrusting at your opponent in close combat...ah, the Romans!

At the moment, I am practicing special flips, spins and twirls, as well as offense and throwing. I am practicing by myself at the moment, I have been doing so for many months now.

Crazy Monkey, have you seen Daredevil or Elektra? Ninja Turtles? The Mummy Returns? The sai is a weapon that resembles the form of a dagger, with prongs on either side.

I havemastered all the moves from Elektra and Daredevil and moves from the Matrix Reloaded and The Mummy Returns. I know how to flip, twirl, throw and spin in many different forms now. It is a great art to practise.

I most enjoy using a Katana.Im not the best but I know the best Defencive and offencive stances.I use fighting game moves alot as well as movies such as "The Last Samurai" to learn moves.(I dont do any of the flourishes off the fighting games though that would be suicide lol.) I also read books on Samurai Swordsmanship often.Or if you want to get specific, books on Bushido.

Like I say, only if checked over by a qualified instructor. ;)

Give me a rapier or a broadsword any day!! I can do the Aragorn swings from TTT - but only because I got Captain Scott to check I was doing them right! (Actually they are incredibly easy, but really impress the mundanes! I use them every sword drill now!)
