Besides, of caurse, "Ash nazg," &c. Everyone knows that.
I really want to know more about it but, well, I can't find ANYTHING! verymad

I know what you mean! verymad
I don't think there is really very much of the Black Speach invented. There are some words in "The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth" by Ruth S. Noel. But not very many, and most of the time it doesn't say what they mean.

Hmmm... but how did they did the muttering of the ring and stuff in the movie? And when Sauron is giving instructions to Saruman: "build me an army..." and when he talks to Frodo: "There is no life in the void..." ?
It all sounds very cool. The only Black Speech in the books is that bit about "ash nazg" when Gandalf says it in the OCuncil, right?

oh... yeah, but what I want to know is what did they use for the movie?
A! Elbereth

i cannot speak the black speech - but I can write it! :flamer: :evilcool: :elfeek: lol

Were'd you learn it from Elbereth?

As I under stand it, the Black Speach is limited to the words found in LotR, as Tolkien did not like the language and never developed it beyond what was needed for his story.

Well, I can write in both Tengwar and Cursive Tengwar - tengwar is what is on the ring, and in which case is the language of Mordor.

i thought... never mind. i'm sure you're right.
but no ones answered my real question yet:
WHAT DID THEY DO FOR THE MOVIE????????/
Catz
September 13th,2002, 09:01 PM
they did what any language scholar would do...they extrapolated using words already formed and corrupted versions of Quenya...using the words already in the lexicon, it is possible to build other words....but this is a long process...and very complicated...
and Tengwar isnt a language....its a script.....you can write English words in Tengwar script...that doesnt stop them being English

Well said, Catz. It's almost a pity that Quenya wasn't the main spoken language of the third age -- they would have had a much easier time with tranlations than they did with Sindarin.

At the Council of Elrond, the ring does the "Ash Nazg..." thing. All the other times it either just kinda whispers (nothing coherent, so it could be anything), says someone's name, or just speaks English!

Tolkien had very little information on his Black Speech, so you can't really learn the language. The stuff they used in the movie(s) was made up by an expert on Tolkien's languages, and s/he(I can't remember who it was) created the stuff they needed based on what information was already given by Tolkien, and then constructed the rest on it.

I'm really sorry but all you can learn from Black Speech are those 2 sentences in LotR, being the Ring Inscription Ash nazg durbatulūk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulūk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul! and, in TTT where Merry & Pippin are carried through Rohan, Uglśk u bagronk sha pushdug Saruman-glob bśbhosh skai! (This quote has two different translations: in PM:83, this is translated "Uglśk to the cesspool, sha! the dungfilth; the great Saruman-fool, skai!"; Elsewhere: : Uglśk to the dung-pit with stinking Saruman-filth, pig-guts, gah!)
But if you don't care whether it is RealTolkienBlackSpeech or not, here I found a post with a RPG wordlist, which has nothing to do with Tolkien as I said, but you could use it for the lackings if you do really need something.
