OK everyone, this isn't a poll because there are too many options.
Who is your favorite Character in LOTR and why?
Just LOTR, no one from any other Tolkien books.

Fatty

Mine would have to be Theoden. A minor character I know but I love the idea of the Rohan culture. Songs and story telling. But still rich in content.

I always read The Ride of the Rohan over and over.

without a doubt, my favorite character from LOTR is Sam. I mean, the kid is just amazing, the friend we've always looked for but have never really found. like Frodo, he goes through a struggle of innocense and ruining knowledge, yet never completely loses his, Hobbitness.

As ypou could Probably tell, my personal favorite character is Prince Imrahil. I've always loved everything to do with Dol Amroth and would love to know more about it.

I also Like Sam just cause he's cool.

O yeah! BArliman Butterbur is definitely one of the best character is the story.entdraught :guzzle:

Hats off to my boy Sam!!notworthy

The only one of the Fellowship with pure motives!!

Not treasure, not glory, not even freedom!! All given, up to and including his life for nothing more than the love of friendship!!

Tom Bombadil! Fatty may not like him, but there's just nothing else quite like Tom. Perhaps that is part of the reason for others' dislike of him. But I like him. Indeed In the House of Tom Bombadil is my favorite chapter. Tom's just so unworldly and yet "down to earth" at the same time. On the surface he's a rediculous man out of the pages of some of the lesser examples of fairy-story, but there's a lot more going on behind those wise blue eyes than meets the surface.

Ironically, another one of my favorites is Fatty Bolger.

Gil-Galad
June 20th,2002, 04:32 AM
I have always liked Aragorn, or Strider as I often call him. He has a serious nature, but underneath that is a being of great joy, wisdom and freindship. "All that is Gold does not glitter". Ever since The Prancing Pony he has captivated me. As soon as I read aboot him i liked his charecter a lot.

Another favorite is Gil-galad. I have always loved the idea of an elven king of that nature, and would lobe to hear aboot him more.

Last, I must mention Gandalf. I have liked him ever since the hobbit. He is a very deep charecter. In one way he is the idea of a wizard. He wears a tall, pointy hat, robes, and has a staff. Yet look deeper and you will see a man (or maia) whois much more than mumbo jumbo. He is wiswe, and he quides with a gentle hand (or healing one, accoriding to Frodo)

Ah heck, i like the whole fellowship! lol

Ronin
June 20th,2002, 12:40 PM
i wouldn't say that people dislike Tom, its just that they probably don't like how un-Middle-earth he is and can't see all that Tolkien tries to accomplish through him. Tom is really a complex character, more ambiguous than most in LOTR.

Well well well let's see now. That is a question i have posted on forums [on cabed-en-aras.com].
My question was "fav character and race".
i answered that i have a lot of fav characters [chose gandalf back then as i was forced to pick one by my question] and my fav race is the hobbits.
okay back to the question here:

The more i re-read THE LORD OF THE RINGS the more i begin to like Tom Bombadil and all the mystery around him. The whole thing that Tolkien did that on purpose and left the riddle of Tom unanswered really thrills the reader, for one simply can not answer for sure "Who and what is Tom Bombadil?".
He's the best. All other characters have a detailed history and maybe that's a reason for liking them. The more you know about a character you like the more you are fond of him/her. But we know very little of Tom and yet so many people like him best.
Tom is the enigma in the LOTR. He rules !notworthy

Fatty
June 20th,2002, 05:37 PM
Well I won't go into why I don't like Old Tom too much. More to do with Tolkien dropping him in from another story unrelated to ME. It jars the flow of the book I think. Plus I mean what bad dress sense. But I can see why people like the mystery, though I am often dubious about some of the thingsa they read into him.

Go Fatty B I say. Running that far and eluding 4 Nazgul. What a guy!!! All after a big meal too. :-)

I like Aragorn, or like Gil-Galad (long time no see, hi there) said Strider as I prefer the Ranger to the King. I loved the character from the first description of the man in the corner, the mystery and the, how to say, sense of both security and insecurity... I think that exactly the magical, almost natural combination of security and insecurity was what made me like him more and more as the book go - he makes the decisions fast and accurate, but yet he has the doubts - I see the perfect hero in him

My second is Merry - the perfect background hero (hate this word, but there is no more exact one), who actually carries a great part of the action, but never steps in the lights.

I like Faramir, because he is a ray of light in Gondor, but say it straight he was not what an endangered world needs.

Boromir is just what an avarage noble human is.

Tom is a nice touch of mystery, he is a part of the background, Tolkein's way to say that he just raised one litle corner of the curtain and there is so much more hiding in there (:]

That was way too long and 'deep' for me

Ronin
June 21st,2002, 11:19 PM
Hiya Mirk! good to see u...:hooray:

loved ur description of Aragorn, perfectly said and i believe one of the main reasons that he is one of the most appealing heroes in literature. the combination of the common man with the noble lineage to which he was born and destined to follow.

as for Tom, his is a character not to be discussed lightly ;) whether he be Eru or Tolkien himself...not for us mortals to know...but we'll sure try to find out!

ahhh dear old TB....he of the hobbits running around on the grass, nak......ok.....i just wont go there.......ive been there before lol
Eowyn and Legolas....Eowyn because thru her we see the best qualities of Aragorn...we see why he is suited to be King, in that he can have normal human feelings but still follow his duty...and Leggsie...do you have to ask???;)
but really, legolas was always one of my favourite characters...thru him you get to see the elves, and i always loved the friendship between he and Gimli.....such a bond, even thru the difficulties of their race....that gradual growth from hostility to companionship....wonderful
and dont give us that mirky, we all know you love being "deep";)
really good to see ya.....

June 22nd,2002, 08:12 PM
If i was forced to make a decision then...Merry, probably. I agree with the whole background hero thing. He never once tries to take credit for what he achieves. The battle of the pelennor fields is my fav part of the whole story...Merry's this strong character who covers up with a cheeky exterior. Most of my mates would agree that if i had to be compared to anyone in the book, Merry would suit me best. (See thread bout characters comparing). :stomper:

My favorite character has always been Faramir. I mean, what's not to like about him? He was able to resist the ring when he found out the Frodo was carrying it and he is a very nice person. He's the only person in his family who doesn't almost screw everything up and get everyone killed. (Boromir, Denethor . . .) He's just so cool. Beregond's my second favorite character. Then Eomer. I don't know why.
notworthy notworthy notworthy notworthy Bow to Faramir!

Gil-Galad
June 24th,2002, 07:37 PM
Aye, i think that faramir is a very noble charecter. He is truly numerorian. He does not squander his noble blood but uses it well to uphold the honor of the white city. He was unfortunate to not be as loved by his father as Boromir was and i think that it hurt him deeply. Mabey that is why he lived in the wild with his rangers of ithilien.

P.S Nice to see you to Mirky!

I don't think Faramir deserves a bow (in the smilie way) or that he deserves power (Faramir to rule Gondor, poor city)... sry I really like the character he so much gives you back the fate in mankind (which is very low in my case, as you can probably say), refreshing character I'd say (he's in my top 3 after all)

I would like to make the announcement thatPrince Imrahil has as muh or MORE Numenorian Blood than Faramir, plus he's just Cooler, hehe.

I forgot about Gwaihir, he is definitely one of the best Charaters.

I would like to speak on behalf of Beregond, ause it seems he forgot on of his favorite characters, Forlong the Fat!

Beregond
June 27th,2002, 12:36 AM
Aah yes, thank you for reminding me Imrahil.

Forlong the Fat perfectly represents the numenorean royalty. He has all the qualitys of obeseity, blubber, fatness, and overwightness. I think he obviously should be everyone's favorite character.

I like most characters: sam, merry, pippin, strider (aragorn), boromir (ok, you may not like him but he was trying to overcome the whole evil thing, he was just human), bill, goldberry (she was soooo weird),elrond, legolas
I don't like gandalf or frodo that much but i guess they're ok really they just didn't appeal to me like the other characters did.

Isildur
June 27th,2002, 06:40 PM
Mine would have to be Isildur. Even though he was weak not being able to resist the ring, he was the one who ultimetly destroyed Sauron and stopped his rampage going on further. Even though he was the cause for Sauron returning if he hadn't destroyed him there he may have become to powerful to even cut his finger off.

Ronin
July 12th,2002, 05:44 PM
That raises an important question...does any find sympathy for Sauron or any of the great evils of Middle-earth?

Pil
July 12th,2002, 07:00 PM
I find it hard to show sympathy for sauron...i felt MILDLY sorry for saruman at certain points. the pathetic, pitifulness of his actions, they become so petty that you can no longer really hate him, just pity him. :mmmm:

I think that we can feel sorry for some of the men that are 'employed' by sauron to fight, they must have been so scared and most of them probably either didn't know WHO they were fighting and WHY or disagreed and had to fight anyway... :(

Algamesh
July 13th,2002, 12:48 AM
Ronin ... very good twist! I've got a comment to make concerning your inquiry ...

Tolkien, being a devout Catholic, adhered to certain Catholic principles when writing the History of Arda. One of these being that nothing is inherently evil. Creation comes from one source and that source being a benevolent deity (Iluvatar, in this case).

So ... one could actually feel pity for Sauron if this issue is observed from a certain POV. Sauron was simply a good idea gone bad. Lately, I've been observing several conversations about the moral redeemability of Melkor's legacy. It is a very interesting concept.

*cough*...on to topic...

Its so hard to pinpoint a fave, even after all the re-readings. Everytime I read LoTR again, I find a new appreciation for some other character. My current spotlight is on all the characters out of the Fellowship. Faramir and Prince Imrahil in particular, and for all the reasons you guys have mentioned earlier in the thread.

and to veer dangerously OT again, I really like the ideas thrown by Ronin and Algamesh on evil and redemption....Shall we start another thread, you think? ;)

for some strange reason, I'd always saw Faramir as a proto-S ensitive N ew A ge G uy.... I loved how he wooed Eowyn.

And the passage where he first meets Frodo, and has to sit down to be at eye-level with our lil'hobbit, and the circle of tough soldiers that surrounded them, and small ,proud, feisty Sam protecting his master, as he relates his journey to Faramir..... i find the image so heart-warming.

It is difficult indeed to pick just one character and say: "Yeah, I'll take that one right there. Uh, can I get that to go?" I have struggled with this perplexing question time and time again. They each have equally yummy qualities, and for me, it comes down to, I CANNOT pass up a guy who's awesome with a bow and arrow!

I'll take Legolas to go!

Ringwraith
August 8th,2002, 04:36 AM
I would have to say Legolas, Gimli and the Ringwraiths.

I see Legolas and Gimli as two sides of the same coin, and one fullfills the other.

The Ringwraiths are, IMO, the best bad guys ever. They are evil cursed forms of existance, neither dead nor living, doomed to serve a wicked master of nothing but evil intent.

I hate it when people have more than two favorite books and things like that, but LOTR is so huge that I think it is alright to have more than one. My favorites are Legolas, just because he is the epitome of cool; Galadriel, because she has basically been around the longest and is still kickin'; and Aragorn, because he is the best fictional hero I have ever read. He never acted superior. Here he is, destined to be king, and he still enjoys the little things like smoking pipeweed with his friends.

Humility is the key with aragorn...i think that's why viggo plays him so well...he's humble too... But that's not what we're talkin bout! :trout:

Samwise the Brave!

I love Sam's character--he has more layers and depth than many give him credit for! I've always loved his curiosity and his fascination with the magical things of Middle Earth like the elves and oliphants...and he's more of a deep thinker than he seems. He's always willing to carry the heaviest pack and think of others before himself and he's pure hearted and unselfish. And he ends up being pretty darm fierce and brave too! And his last line in the book (as simple as it is) always brings tears to my eyes (maybe that's just becuase it means the story is over!)

But I have to say that Faramir is a cool character. I thought he'd be like in the Movie, but I think in the book he's totally different.
Legolas should be my fave, I mean... when I read something about him, I'm like, why can't I be an Elf?mecry Everything written about him is just as cool.:gofatty:

how about Frodo?
he's my favorite (sam is also)... The whole story is about him making it and his courage and strength to deal with this burden.. you gotta give him props for that... and i really respect the fact he's so courageous, he follows what Gandalf said in the beginning and goes through with his resolve to go to Mordor..and destroy the Ring... one part that made me know for certain that he's my favorite character is what happened in the Breaking of the Fellowship, where he did not want to risk anyone else being tempted by the Ring, and while on Amon Hen decided at once he must go to Mordor to thwart Sauron and Saruman's will to dominate Middle Earth...
that's just pure strength and courage right there... two traits that hobbits have and that i really respect....

and also in the movie version, after having a flashback on what Gandalf once told him about using the time that is given to us to effect the future, when he ran into the river for the canoe, that is just CLASSIC....

so therefore, my favorite character is Frodo =)

GO FRODO! ;)

Major Characters: Sam, Merry, Pippin and Frodo. They could always stop and have time for a sandwich, smoke, and a story even when the world was collapsing around them.
Minor Characters: Glorfindel, Ran off the Ringwraithes on more than one occasion, killed a Balrog, etc. Subtle and oozing with power

Wouldn't the world be a better place if everyone was like a hobbit and we could forget our troubles no matter how bad they are?:(

where does it say that Glorfindel killed the Balrog? Didn't Gandalf "throw it down the mountain"?
(where did i miss this vital detail?) ;)

Glorfindel Killed a Balrog in Gondolin, although he did not survive the battle himself. It's in the Silmarillion but since he is in the LOTR also, I chose to reference that also.
Originally there were several Balrogs, they were currupted Maia, like Sauron, but not as powerful. In the original story, The Fall of Gondolin, there were hundreds, but the Prof. commented later that there were only a few, no more than 7.
Imagine several of those nasties coming at you.

Actually, some have said that the Glorfindel from Rivendell and the Glorfindel from Gondolin are 2 different Glorfindels. I'm not sure myself. I haven't even read the Silmarillion. But this site might be useful: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm

My favorite character is Legolas. I think it is because the least was written about him. That makes him more mysterious and leaves more for my imagination.

After reading the books my fave character has to be Frodo because of his courage and will but also Sam because he gets Frodo to Mordor and saves him and the Quest.
So he is yours?

Saruman
December 21st,2003, 11:37 AM
1st: Saruman - I've alwaysprefered reading about villains. Although he has more intelligence than Sauron, Sauron ses throgh him. It's quite amazing that he still thinks he can use the Ring himself, right up until the end. This is partly due to his pride and, at the end, bitterness.

2nd: Treebeard - I always loved this part in the book, particulaly the story of the fall of Isengard in 'Flotsam and Jetsam'.

3rd: Wormtongue - I never understood why people who feel sorry for Gollum do not feel sorry for Wormtongue. He basically does all his foul deeds because he wants to be near Eowyn, who does not return his love. A very tragic character indeed.

Merged it wiht the exciting (tho ancient!) thread (:

My opinion on this matter hasn't actually changed.... so I'll just quote it ;)

I like Aragorn, or like Gil-Galad said Strider as I prefer the Ranger to the King.

Tom is a nice touch of mystery, he is a part of the background, Tolkein's way to say that he just raised one litle corner of the curtain and there is so much more hiding in there (:]

can't remember if I've already answered this thread... i may well have, but here's my answer again:

Elrond.

And I can't tell you why, because I don't know, but he's my favourite character :p or his sons. Whoever I think of first :p

Frodo and Sam all the way... The RotK movie just makes me love them ten times more!!!!!!
The strength, resilience, courage of these hobbits are unparalleled. Sam's bravery, loyalty and friendship to Frodo is soooo touching!!! :sam: :loveyou:
Frodo--wise Frodo in the books and adorable, cute Frodo in the movies... it's still the courageous, sacrifical hobbit i hold so very dear. :frodo: ohhh Frodo! all that you have to sacrifice for the greater good of Middle-Earth!!! notworthy EVERYONE bow to Frodo and Sam!!!!! notworthy notworthy notworthy =) yay hobbits! :hooray:

Hmm... my top 5 favorite characters from the books are...
(in no particular order)
-Gandalf
-Faramir
-Treebeard
-Aragorn
-Pippin

I have no idea why. I really love them all! I also like Elrond and Sam!

Sauron
January 1st,2004, 01:47 AM
My favorite would have to be Sauron himself. Such power yet such mysetory. My second is The Witch King. "Thou Fool, no man can slay me". Funny how no one seems to like Frodo, he is the hero.

Tough question!

As a little girl I liked Gandalf because he's just so wise and powerful and in control. I like Galadriel for her grace, wisdom and yet being very kind and that over all elf quality that I'd love to possess. I can't help but love Frodo and Sam the backbone of the story. I like Eowyn for her strength and being able to think outside her sphere. And if I was going to choose a man for myself from LOTR it'd have to be Faramir. He's your peace -time kind of leader and over all nice guy! He comes through the story just fine and like the hobbits he doesn't have the help of the magic of elves or powers of a wizard.

I love Sam but I love Frodo also...they're my favorite characters in the books and movies they're a tie for me... I like them both a lot. Second would have to be Gandalf for his ways of rallying the men of Rohan and Gondor to fight... great manipulator of the events that happen and Ian McKellen was awesome portraying Gandalf especially in FotR. :gandalf:

Probably being really obvious here, but I'd have to say Frodo closely followed by Sam. From the first time I read the book they were my favourites, and that's never changed.
Frodo because he's thrust into an adventure he does't want, but he wants to save the Shire, and Sam because he is so loyal to Frodo.

i kn ow that ive chossen hurin amortal as my user name but my favorite character is elrond why him he is, if some of those new to this story, is reaferd to as "halfelf" meaning one of his parents was mortal and one immortal now there is a story of him and his brother ( i think it was elrose) they were given the chose of mortal or immortal life. his knolowgey and wisdome is matched by only gandalf he's kindhearted and loving he is an stong and valiant warrior slow to anger but woe to those who are in his path when he does the story of his past is sad as well as awsome truly cool and remarkable person.(p.s. sorry for the 3rd grade spelling)lololololo!!!!!

Top 5
1) Elrond
2) Galadriel
3) Arwen
4) Eowyn
5) Sam

Elrond I love because he is so kind and wise. Arwen, Galadriel and Eowyn are really strong female characters. Sam reminds me of a friend of mine and is so loyal.

Frodo's Pearl

My top three are:
1) Frodo
2) Sam
3) Galadriel

I love how willing Frodo was to take the burden upon himself, dispite all hardships. He's just a special, crystaline character that I could ramble on forever about and who makes me speechless at the same time.
Sam, well, what can I say? He's the friend of friends that we all need... and need to imitate.
Galadriel is a beautiful character. I love how she symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary; how she helped Frodo along his Quest even when she wasn't there. She was a comforter and benefactor, and as an Elf, a untouchable gem.

Aragorn. Hands down. No question. His essence burns brightly in the souls of all my father figures and consequently, in mine. I've found myself and my purpose and my place and my calling and all those things authors rave about in coming-of-age novels via unconventional means, and Aragorn was the perfect maverick hero for me to admire.

I'm with Rohirrim on this one...it's hard to choose ONE. I pretty much love most of them...all the guys of course. I find the women are a bit out of place in this trilogy....and don't actually mind.

So they are as follows:
Aragorn
Faramir
Eomer
Legolas
Gandalf
Sam
Frodo
Pippin
Merry
Gimli

Heck even Gollum...just cause he reminds me so much of me...minus the evilness. haha But honestly though, I'm not schiz. I promise. According to everyone I know...I'm bipolar. But it's not true...I've never been diagnosed.

I love most of the male charries for lusty reasons. (I swear I don't stalk Legolas, really I don't lol) and the male charries that I don't lust after, but are still on the side of good, are fave chars because I admire them and they are just genuinely COOL. I love the female charries because I admire them and wish I could emulate them. Their courage, wisdom, compasion and ability to love so hard and so deeply have always inspired me. Lady Galadriel is definately my fave. She is so amazing.

I have always liked Gandalf and Sam. Gandalf because he was just so funny in the books and his grumpyness reminded me of my own dad. lol Sam, because it seems that in novels, I have always admired the lowly, selfless humble character, because I can relate to them. Characters who are humble, kind and altogether pure at heart are the ones that I come to adore.
That is one reason why I like Faramir so much too. I was so impressed that Tolkien put this one guy in the story who had no inclination to see this thing of evil or touch it. I don't care what people say about it taking away the ring's power. It was just a cool thing. Faramir is the symbol of a pure heart which cannot be touched by evil because he has been blessed by wisdom. I could go on and on. He reminds me of Sam's character in his selflessness. And his compassion touched me. It was a shame they had to change his character so drastically in the movies...
But, now that I think of it, they didn't change it THAT much. the extended scene with the whole family showed that what Faramir did was actually for his father's acceptance. If you think about it, Faramir really doesn't try to touch it or take it from Frodo like boromir did. He just takes them to Gondor and sends them to Denethor. That's where he's different from his brother in the movies. Faramir never seems to be tempted to take the ring for himself, just for his father.
And in the end, he comes out victorious and gives the hobbits a safe path to go on. :)
As for the female characters, I've always admired Eowyn. Her courage and determination are very admirable. She reminds me of Mulan. Even though what she did kind of seems like a suicide ride because Aragorn won't return her love, it's more of a way to help redeem her people's former glory, I think.
And then, there's that sweet couple seen in RotK...But that's for a different thread...;)

I like the Mouth of Sauron (suprise, eh?) I know there isn't much about him but he's just so dark, forboding and mysterious that i can't help but like him most of all.

Then I would have to say Faramir and Arwen.
