Hey everyone,

I have been a fan of LOTR for a long time and I am a lover of music as well. Mostly into classic rock and such. Not a big country or rap fan but there are some songs I can handle.. Anyways, to get the point I would like to start a thread about some classic rock songs that I love and a very popular band that sang them. I'm sure everyone knows or has heard of Led Zepplin right? Well did you know (Which I'm sure some/alot of you already know) that Led Zepplin sang songs about LOTR or had references to the tales in some of their songs? I am posting one of many links to some interesting facts about the songs and Led Zepplin. It has brought to me a new and very interesting thought of how much Tolkein and LOTR have touched not only common people but very famous ones as well.. I would love to discuss these songs with everyone and read your comments... I hope you find it as interesting as I do... Anyway, here is the link... Just a little note: I'm not advertising anyones website, just pointing out one of the many sites that has something about the subject....

Hope to hear from everyone soon....

Also, bands like Rush apparently wrote some of their songs in reference to Tolkien...I think one in particular is "Farewell to Kings"...but I am not positive, and it would only be a vague reference. And their song "Rivendell" is obviously a reference to Tolkien lol (Their guitar is phenomenal, btw...in case anyone who hasn't listened to them is interested--I reccomend 2012 Overature, "Closer to the Heart", "Cinderella Man", and "Something for Nothing". )

It's amazing how many lives he has touched with his works... I have heard a few of those songs of Rush and yes they are good songs. The songs that are listed on the link that I posted from Led Zepplin have a certain ring to them when you listen to them... I always wondered how it would sound if you put the one of the Lord of the Rings movies to musice from our time, songs that reference... List to a few of them and see how they touch you... It's really wierd... Hell maybe I'm just wierd... LMAO!!!

I believe the Rush song that's the most obvious reference is called Rivendell. The Led Zep album called the Runes album is the one with the most blatant references. Some even say that "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold" is Galadriel (from Stairway to Heaven) There's a wonderful piece on the relationship between heavy metal and JRR in the dvd Ringers-Lord of the Fans.

Led Zeppelin is really great, although I do prefer PINK FLOYD (anyway, I have complete collection of them both).

Pink Floyd did some (probably unintentional) references too. Not only Lotr, but to the movie The Wizard of Oz. When you play Floyd's best selling album The Dark Side of the Moon alongside the movie, strange things start to happen.

To Lotr: well these are kinda made up right now, but in the song Time, they sing about how great it is to be at home and what to do with the time that is given to you, which are major points of RotK, too.

You've done Dark Side of the Rainbow? (the combination of DS and Oz) My kids are seriously into that- I've seen some connection, but I also believe many of the 'connections' are just imagined. (or drug induced, but that's a child of the 60 talking lol ) And I too prefer Floyd....I'm not a huge 'heavy metal' fan, which is Zep.

Yeah I have seen and heard the Dark Side the Oz thing... It is truly fascinating but L.Z. has the most references that I have heard in any songs... I have a friend that is a huge Pink Floyd fan and LOTR fan and he has never said anything about references of LOTR in any Pink Floyd song... Hmmm? I wonder if he even knows... Probably to much Longbottom... HAHAHA :lmao:

Anyway, alot of Led Zepplins album covers seem to represent alot of the things from LOTR but that is up for discussion as well... I think it is a very deep topic. Well be back later...

Talk to you all soon,

Ramble On is one of my fav Zep songs related to Tolkien. I used part of the lyrics (In the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair, but Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her) in the game thread called "Its the PALANTIR OF FORTUNE!".

I used to think Styx's song "Lords of the Ring" was a reference to JRRT, but it ended up being indirectly related. The song is actually about boxing.

My fave LOTR song is by Blind Guardian - "Lord of the rings"

"There are signs on the ring
Which make me feel so down
There's one to enslave all rings
To find them all in time
And drive them into darkness
Forever they'll be bound
Three for the kings
Of the elves high in light
Nine to the mortals
Which cry

I'll keep the ring full of sorrow
I'll keep the ring till I die

I'll keep the ring full of sorrow
I'll keep the ring till I die

Chorus:
Slow down and I sail on the river
Slow down and I walk to the hill (2x)

And there's no way out now

Mordor Mordor Mordor

Dark land under Sauron's spell
Threatened a long time
Threatened a long time

Seven rings to the dwarves
In their halls made of stone
Into the valley
Into the valley
I feel down
One ring to the dark lord's hand
Sitting on his throne
In a land so dark
Where I have to go

I'll keep the ring... (5x)
Till I...
Chorus (2x)
(I'll Keep the ring)
Chorus (2x)

Yes that B.G. song is wonderful!! Love it!
But I must say...Led Zeppelin is most known for their LOTR shout outs
Lets break dowb Ramble on by LZ shall we? ;)
"Leaves are falling all around,=showing the fall time of September 22
It’s time I was on my way.=Frodo stated his quest on that day
Thanks to you, I’m much obliged=possiably talking about Bilbo
For such a pleasant stay.=Bilbo taking in Frodo to live at Bag End

But now it’s time for me to go,=leaving
The autumn moon lights my way.=again night of Bilbo's and Frodo's BDay
For now I smell the rain,=seeing the world isnt all sun shine and happiness
And with it pain,=there is pain in the outside world
And it’s headed my way.=the pain of a great journey is ahead
Ah, sometimes I grow so tired,=the weight of the Ring
But I know I’ve got one thing I got to do,=Frodo's quest

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now= time to do what needs to be done
To sing my song.= tale my tale
I’m goin’ ’round the world,= seems that way from Hobbiton to Mordor
I got to find my girl, on my way.= girl-freedom
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,=Gandalf told of the Ring
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.= talking about freedom from the Ring

Got no time to for spreadin’ roots,= Cant settle down in the Shire
The time has come to be gone.= Have to get started
And tho’ our health we drank a thousand times,= the hobbits drunk their health before leaving Bag End
It’s time to ramble on.= nuf said

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

I ain’t tellin’ no lie.

Mine’s a tale that can’t be told,= Tale of Smeagol
My freedom I hold dear;= What little he had from the Ring
How years ago in days of old= when he was still just Smeagol
When magic filled the air,= how he used to be outside in sun and moon
T’was in the darkest depths of mordor= nuf said
I met a girl so fair,= found his freedom again (ring about to be distroyed)
But gollum, and the evil one crept up= Gollum took over Smeagol again
And slipped away with her.= Took Smeagol's freedom/life with the Ring
Her, her....yea.
Ain’t nothing I can do, no.= He died

Ramble on,
And now’s the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
I’m goin’ ’round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
I’ve been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Gonna ramble on, sing my song
Gotta keep-a-searchin’ for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world
I can’t stop this feelin’ in my heart
Gotta keep searchin’ for my baby
I can’t find my bluebird!
I’d listen to my bluebird sing but I can’t find my blue bird
A-keep-a ramblin’ baby..."

Well thats how I hear the song...AND ITS EVEN BETTER!! :) :yahoo: I LOVE LED ZEPPELIN!!
And Misty Mountain Hop...come on..the name gives it way (though many thought it was about drugs....who really knows the real hidden messege in that one)
