Alkarie
September 30th,2002, 05:42 AM
Actually, I just loved Glorfindel, just because of all the history he has from the Sil, but since he was ripped out of the movie, I guess Galadriel is next, for the same reasons. She is very old and wise and subtly powerful (like I guess all the best characters in Tolkien are).

Bonos-Girl
October 1st,2002, 11:32 AM

Haldir is okay but Lego rules. Dunno if ne 1 else noticed but when Haldir first talks to Aragorn in Lorien and elves r surroundin them, there is an elf standin behind Haldir who kinda luks like a woman but has a v dark stubbly chin, so i guess she looks like a woman in need of a shave.Mayb its just me.......Oh, and Bonos-Girl?Haldir has a fan club? I can understand the PERVY HOBBITFANCIER but......

Tary

I miss Glorfindel. I quite liked him in the book (though admittedly he wasnt in LOTR that much)
Also Elladan and Elrohir-you only get glimpses of what could be them in the film. I thought they were all mysterious in the book.

Still I agree Legolas is the hottest elf lol :loveyou:

November 11th,2002, 02:55 AM
I guess the concensus is Legolas, and even reading the book, he is just so mysterious and cool. And in the movies, too. Yes, I vote for him, though I must say I was intrigued by the quiet Rumil. I understand - based soley upon a T-shirt the actor who plays Rumil wears in a photo - that he will show up at Helm's Deep.

Adamanta Baggins

It totally shocked me though to learn that the great Haldir was once a Doctor on that terrible afternoon soap 'Shortland Street'*- I would never recognised him without the luscious blond locks!

But personally I was impressed with Hugo Weavings' Elrond, wisest and experienced of all elves. And theres plenty that can be said for an older man!

*No Offence meant to any fans of aforementioned series.

Bonos-Girl
February 11th,2003, 06:17 PM
he was in shortland street?! omg....all those years i could've been watching haldir...but no...i had to decide it was a terrible programme without even bothering to watch it...(you may be able to tell that i am kicking myself right now!)

Shieldmaide of Rohan
February 11th,2003, 07:26 PM
Yeah, he played guy warner a dashing noah-wyle -esque surgeon. Wasnt quite so chunky in those days as I remember!
Oh the embarassing pasts of LOTR characters!

Adunauriel
February 11th,2003, 08:31 PM
Actually after seeing Craig Parker out of Haldir costume. He doesn't look so chuncky, so I think the make-up and stuff made him look chunkier...

Winyaél Greenleaf
February 21st,2003, 12:00 PM
Don't worry Glarawen, patience! As long as you know where you can get your hands on it, that would be fine. For me, I had a pretty hard time searching for it. I went to the more prominent stores like Tower records and HMV but to no avail. I finally found it in some tiny store in a not so prominent shopping centre

Actually, I've got a new dvd drive, but i cant assemble it myself so i gotta engage external help. Sigh... Whats this Cast Chat thing? is it in Disc 3/4 or some option?

Adunauriel
February 22nd,2003, 02:50 AM
It's the cast commentary, you can turn it on while watching the movie.. It's really funny, and I recomend it, but only after watching the movie once or twice without it on....

Winyaél Greenleaf
February 23rd,2003, 04:07 AM
Hey, I've FINALLY got to watch the dvd! I watched the entire movie and managed to pick out quite some new scenes. But someone said there was supposed to see this really great scene of Legolas 'glowing' or something, and I don't see that  but then i was practically half asleep then so I might haf just missed something... and i watched the fellowship of the cast, a day in the life of a hobbit, and cameras in middle-earth. Those were nice. Dom is so funny when he mimicked BK. and Sean's foot... poor thing. I saw abt how they did the scaling and stuff. Really great. Haven't watched all of the cast commentary yet though. It was late and as i said i was almost half asleep. I had the captions on but they were jumping all over the place. But at least I could pick out what everyone was saying. I like Billy's accent. lol I'm exploring the dvd online features now. lol. and i love the council of elrond editorial. Poor guys had to do 36 takes. lol Anyone have any recommendations? I can't possibly watch it all.

Legolas' Angel
February 23rd,2003, 05:55 PM
Wat cd is the lembas commercial on? Wat r the online features like? It suxs caause i dont have a dvd rom on ma computer. Totally not fair!

Adunauriel

If your watching the Extended DVD with the cast commentary on, Orlando says it kind of as a joke.. It's not really a commercial...

Its when you watch the movie with the cast commentary on. and its in a new scene in the extended dvd.

Adunauriel
February 25th,2003, 03:56 AM
Yep, it's when they get the Lembas from the elves as their leaving Lothlorien.. In the Movie Legolas says "Lembas, elvish whaybread. One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.." If you listening to the commentary thou, Orlando says, that he felt like this was his Lembas Commercial.. He then says it like how I have it in my Siggy, in this pitch man kind of voice... It's funny....

Is there really any doubt as to who MOST everybody's favorite elf will be? (I did say "most" I know some people won't choose him) Although I must admit that I am with the majority on this one. (cheering) Le-go-las, Le-go-las!!! For the record, the reason he's my favorite is becasue he does he coolest things: shield surfing, swinging up onto a horse, and that knife work! I wish I could do all that! The fact that he is easy on the eyes is just bonus. ;)

Adunauriel
February 27th,2003, 10:56 PM
Well, there's always those great bonuses... But my fave Elf is now Glorfindel... He's stolen my heart... :loveyou:

He did? I'm so terribly sorry, but I've been out of touch of the books for quite a while. I would like to see that part again, if you could enlighten me about it. :duh:
Wow, that means he's really formidable. lol

Adunauriel
March 3rd,2003, 06:43 PM
I believe he killed the Balrog in the Silmarillian.. I haven't read that book yet, so I can't enlighten you there.. Sorry, I'll try and read it as soon as I can..

Winyaél Greenleaf

Oh alright thank goodness. I thought my brains were rusting. If something of such significance happened in LOTR, I knew I ought to have remembered. lol

Adunauriel
March 4th,2003, 08:54 PM
Well, you didn't miss anything..;) But my Glorfindel is quite the elf...

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 5th,2003, 01:47 PM
Yes, they shouldn't have replaced him with Arwen in the movie. Wonder who would have acted as him. Anyone got any notion? lol
Anyway, theres been talk in an ROTK thread (I think its called 'will elves go to war in rotk) that says Glorfindel might replace Haldir as elf general if the elves go to war, cuz PJ might want to put him back. But well, that's only a thought. lol

Adunauriel
March 5th,2003, 09:10 PM
That sounds like an excellent Idea, and I do wonder who will play him.. I hope whoever it is, is very good looking...

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 6th,2003, 12:26 PM
I'm sure they will. They get all the good looking guys, for the elves. I mean, Elrond and Haldir are pretty easy on the eyes. And there's this Figwit guy who's created some controversy. lol And of course there's Legolas!!!
But I went to this website that they had under the news forum. It states all the characters in the book and there are links to those that they have decided to include in the movie. Unfortunately, Glorfindel doesn't have one.
And I've been wanting to see Prince Imarahil's appearance, but no, his name doesn't have a link either. I want to see Elladen and Elrohir!!!! Will they find twins to star as them? Will they even have them in the movie?

Luvara
March 6th,2003, 06:18 PM
Aragorn is not an elf, so I'll choose Legolas! ;)

My favorite elf would have to be legolas as well. Swift, lethal, and kind, hes an ally id like to have. I'd never want him as an enemy.

Adunauriel
March 7th,2003, 07:56 PM
Yes, Legolas is a great ally, and a fierce enemy. Thou, I think the same thing can be said for all elves...

Calenfiniel
March 7th,2003, 08:10 PM
yes, any elf would be an ally indeed!

Celebrían
March 7th,2003, 08:18 PM
You guys are so right! Legolas (as well as all the elves) are fierce, strong, and determined fighters, but I would not want to be the one of their enemies ( of course who would? but I think you all know that I'm just trying to make a point  ) I wouldn't stand a chance against them! You know, "You would die before your stroke fell!" YIKES! ELVES ROCK!!!!!!!!

Calenfiniel
March 7th,2003, 08:21 PM
fierce warriors, yet gentle and graceful while not on the battlefield. not to mention, immortal. One could learn so much!

Celebrían
March 7th,2003, 08:32 PM
Ah, to be an elf...

Adunauriel
March 8th,2003, 03:08 AM
Well Celebrían aren't you an Elf? The daughter of Celeborn & Galadriel.. Life Partner to Elrond..

Celebrían
March 8th,2003, 05:38 AM
Ah, true, true. :) But you know what I mean ;) I guess I'm an elf as far as this site is concerned. By the way, what happend to me? I was never able to figure this out. Did Celebrían go to the Grey Havens, or was she captured and tortured by orcs? I've heard both, do you know?

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 8th,2003, 07:06 AM
I heard that Celebrian went off to the sea.

Adunauriel
March 9th,2003, 03:24 AM
Ok, in year 2509 of the third age. Celebrían journeying to Lórien was waylaid in the Redhorn Pass, and recieved a poisoned wound..

Then in year 2510 Celbrían departed over the sea...

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 9th,2003, 03:27 AM
Well, so does departed=death?

Bonos-Girl
March 9th,2003, 04:20 PM
no..they all just left...

Celebrían
March 9th,2003, 09:41 PM
Ah...I see. Why in the world, though, would I leave my husband and children?! Good Grief! I think I may want to look into getting some therapy! lol

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 10th,2003, 07:19 AM
Maybe you should have gone back. Poor Elrond must have been so lonely! lol

Celebrían
March 10th,2003, 07:32 AM
Yeah, I know, I'm having a hard time forgiving myself for that. I just KNOW that if I had been there my daughter wouldn't have run off and gone "mortal"! lol

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 10th,2003, 07:50 AM
do u chat at the chat room? is anyone there now?

Celebrían
March 10th,2003, 07:56 AM
Who me? I did once, but the conversation was kinda dragging, so I opted to go elsewhere, but I'll go again. I don't know if anyone's there now. Maybe I'll check in a minute. :)

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 10th,2003, 08:45 AM
Well, the chatroom is deserted. So sad. *sob*

Adunauriel
March 10th,2003, 08:10 PM
I think the reason Celebrían departed over the sea, is that she knew she'd never be completly healthy. So she sailed to Valinor, and it's not like she & Elrond never saw one another again.. He sailed there after the Ring was distroyed remember, with Bilbo, Frodo, & Galadriel....

Celebrían
March 10th,2003, 10:15 PM
That makes sense, Adunauriel. I guess I'd want to leave, too, but all of the stuff about "leaving Elrond" was in jest. ;) But I never thought about the reason for her departure that way. Thanks for the insight!

erm... Celebrian, that sounded rather suggestive you know... :naughty:

But twins are so mysterious, as in have you guys read about strange phenomenons like twins having accidents at the same time even when their doing different stuff, experience the same stuff even when they are miles apart from each other and so on...

Well anyway, yeah its true that they're always referred to as '2 for the price of 1' lol

OH MY!!!! Celebrían!!! Are you suffering from some memory ailment?? :elfeek: Your poor poor sons!!! mecry
Heh... just kidding! It's not surprising that we occasionally forget some characters. I haven't been in touch with the books for some time. I would have forgotten many not-so-significant characters, though to me, the twins are rather significant. lol
You wanna read through Sil too? Yeah high 5! Unfortunately, I'm still looking around for it. I don't think the twins will be mentioned in much detail in Sil though. Afterall they are the younger generation. lol You can read more about them in ROTK.

lol I already have! (kidding) It's funny, because people always act differently around me when they figure out that I study psych. I don't know why-silly really.

Do you know if there is any description of what my sons look like? I was just curious. I've read LOTR and am reading through it again, I was just wondering if you happened to know ( If you do just tell me where, and I'll read it myself  ). Didn't Elladan & Elrohir also sail to Valinor, or did they remain on Middle-Earth?

Celebrían
March 19th,2003, 09:57 PM
The links that Win posted talk about that very issue, although I must admit I'm a bit confused about some of the things they said. If you want, Adunauriel, check out the links, then we'll discuss. :)

And thanks for the reminder, Win. I would visit them this week, but their mother has two big psychology exams tomorrow, so they'll just have to wait till next weekend......... ;)

Adunauriel
March 20th,2003, 08:49 PM
Well, after reading the information on the sites that Win posted, I'd have to say that it is still a bit confusing... I'd also have to say, that I believe that they eventually did sail to Valinor... Maybe like Legolas, they sailed after the death of Aragorn, and their sister...

Celebrían
March 20th,2003, 10:13 PM
Yeah, the bit that confused me was the issue of the twins having to choose whether or not they would stay, and if they did stay, they would eventually die. I thought they [elves] couldn't die (I know they can die under those circumstances such as dying of giref and being killed in batlle and such), but they had to choose whether they would remain immortal, based upon their decision to stay in ME?

Was that confusing enough?

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 21st,2003, 02:50 AM
Gah...! That stuff is confusing. But it wasn't said that the twins sailed to Valinor.
Anyway, I went shopping yesterday and stumbled upon this collectibles shop selling lotr stuff. And OH MY! You should have seen those posters and calendar cards of Leggy! *swoon* :loveyou: I was practically hysterical there. They also had some adorable tiny lego aragorn, frodo and legolas figuirines! I sure spent a lot of money yesterday.
btw, if the elves don't sail to Valinor, does that mean they will die? Then arwen wouldn't have anything to worry about, would she? And anyway, what about the avari (the elves who refuse to sail to valinor, as what I read from the Sil)?

Celebrían
March 21st,2003, 03:11 AM
I'm confused with you, Win  . I don't understand the whole issue of "if you [elves] stay in ME and don't go to Valinor, you will die" (become mortal). Could someone explain?

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 21st,2003, 03:18 AM
Ok sorry. haha. I might be talking rubbish basically. Personally, I'm quite confused too. But then why do they make a big fuss abt going to Valinor in that case?

Celebrían
March 21st,2003, 03:41 AM
No! I hope you don't think I was accusing you of confusing me (boy, does THAT sound confusing! ) I just like to know all of the details and exceptions to the rules and such when it comes to the elves. I'm just one of those girls. I think what I need is an "Elves 101" course to explain it all, with charts and everything! :)

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 21st,2003, 03:44 AM
Oh no, of course I know you wouldn't accuse me of confusing you, cuz you're such a nice person, right? lol I would need an elf encyclopedia too. Maybe Adun can enlighten us. Or you wanna check out the encyclopedia of Varda website again? http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm

Celebrían
March 21st,2003, 03:52 AM
Why of course I'm a nice person.............or AM I? :naughty: (Only kidding) ;) Yeah, I'll check that link out, and maybe Adun can "enlighten us" tomorrow...

Luvara
March 21st,2003, 08:09 AM
I have no idea...

Adunauriel
March 22nd,2003, 12:27 AM
I don't think all the Elves had to sail to Valinor to remain Immortal.. I think that idea only applyed to the children of Elrond, bacause they weren't 100% Elves.. I think eventually that all the elves probably decided to leave M-E.. As for Elladan & Elrohir, I wouldn't be suprised if they chose to sail after Arwen died...

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 22nd,2003, 04:26 AM
I see... So how long can half-elves live if they don't sail to Valinor? I wonder what's it at Valinor that makes one remain immortal. lol

Adunauriel
March 22nd,2003, 11:31 PM
I think Valinor is the equivalent of 'Heaven on Earth'... It's just an extreemly special place, blessed by the God Iluvatar....

It's much appreciated, Adun!

I just posted this link in the "favorite race" thread, and just realized that it might be more appropriate here. Sorry about that! It attempts to explain "elven genetics". If you want, take a look and we can discuss. It even talks specifically about my favorite elf (staying on topic), Legolas. As a matter of fact, it talks about everybody listed in the poll exept Haldir. So anyway, here you go (again):

http://www.luchau.org/writing/elven_genetics.htm

Let me know what you guys think!

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 25th,2003, 03:41 PM
Oh my! I can't believe they did this! Very impressive, I must say! I remembered all these genetic cross-test things always bored me during biology class. But now I shall be glad to study this closely!

Celebrían
March 25th,2003, 09:05 PM
lol Ditto!

Adunauriel
March 25th,2003, 11:26 PM
Well as I said in the other thread, genetics aren't really my thing.. Besides I already know that Glorfindel is blonde...

Celebrían
March 26th,2003, 12:35 AM
I don't think the article talked about Glofindel, but I could have forgotten.....I just thought it was interesting, but to each his own......

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 26th,2003, 10:36 AM
But it didn't really say much abt legolas either, cuz there are no details about the colour of his mum's hair anyway. I suppose Thranduil has homozygous genes for blonde hair, since blonde is recessive.

Adunauriel
March 26th,2003, 10:25 PM
It kind of seems right to think of Legolas as a blonde.. I can't really picture him as anything else.....

Celebrían
March 26th,2003, 10:32 PM
Yeah, me too. Considering all the producers had to go on was Thranduil's hair color, it's logical that Legolas would be blonde. Although I did think that it was an interesting point that whenever an elf had hair color other than brown/black, Tolkien pointed that out (in other words, assume dark hair unless otherwise noted) and since we are never told Legolas' hair color, I guess that means that he was dark haired, but I must admit, the blonde hair does good things for him. ;)

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 27th,2003, 09:12 AM
Anyway, I can't imagine Leggy with dark hair. :o It would have been weird... I guess, since we're so used to seeing him as a blonde. lol
What abt the twins? Dark hair?

Elfdaughter
March 27th,2003, 01:28 PM
Well, considering Arwen and Elrond have dark hair, it would make sense that the twins would too. Of course, it depends on their mother - did she have dark hair? Who was their mother?

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 27th,2003, 01:32 PM
Celebrian. She's got silver hair.

Elfdaughter
March 27th,2003, 03:17 PM
Oh yeah, of course. Well, according to genetics, it's about a 50/50 chance that the twins'd have dark hair (and 50/50 that they'd have silver.)

Elfdaughter
March 27th,2003, 03:17 PM
I'd like to see them have silver hair. That'd be cool.

Winyaél Greenleaf
March 27th,2003, 03:21 PM
me too!!!

Adunauriel

Why, yours truly ;) I have silver hair (hence my name. It means "lady crowned with silver") and Elrond has dark hair, as do the twins and, as we all know, Arwen. Apparently silver is a recessive trait.

If S reps dominant dark hair and s reps recessive silver hair, I guess Elrond's genes will be SS (or could be Ss too) and Cel's will be ss definitely. then if you do a genetic test cross, it'll be Ss for all the genes and since dark hair is dominant, silver won't show up and so no hope for silver hair. Unless the genes in Elrond's hair is Ss (s could be for other colour other than dark), then results of test cross for the genes of the offspring will be Ss, Ss, ss and ss. So it'll be 50% chance for dark hair and 50% for silver hair. Am I making sense?
btw, the pics that were rumoured to be of the twins would actually not be their pictures anyway cuz one of them has dark hair and the other, blonde.

If one is blonde, than they definitely can NOT be the twins. Quote from LotR-The Passing of the Grey Company chapter "So much alike were they, the sons of Elrond, that few could tell them apart: dark-haired, grey-eyed, and their faces elven-fair,"

Note the 'Dark-haired' - I think that sorts it. If PJ puts them in, he'll follow the book, and they'll have dark hair. This quote obviously puts our speculation down! Dark hair it is!roflmao

yes we know they are darked-haired. we were just discussing about elven genetics and the possibilities of the test cross. :)

I think alot of people have questions about how the elves really would look... It's cool and all, but sometime just a bit overwhelming....

Haha thanks. I was thinking of going into the field of life sciences. lol
Anyway, let's not talk abt elven genetics anymore lol

Celebrian that is the theory, which works in principal but there are a few exceptions. There are many examples where this theory does not always seem to hold up. There are some cases where mixed raced child inheriting the D(ark) hair gamete from a parent have had blonde hair. Evenin Lord of the Rings there are a few cases where this rule has not held up. Tuor,Lalaith, Finnarfin are all examples of how they have not got the phenotype of the dominat gene.

Concering Elrond am almost certain that he must have at least one d(light blonde hair) genotype. This is because both his grandparents from his fathers side had blonde hair. Therefore Elrond would likely have the genotype Dd. So it probably would be possible for his children to have silver hair, but am sure that they resembled their father and had dark hair.

Your very right David D.. I'm also a believer that the twins have dark hair like their father....

But to get on topic, my fave Elf is Glorfindel... Ok, I know that wasn't a big shocker....lol ;)
