Okay, some folks out there have asked me to talk about this and I will.
The tatics of GW's Lord of the Rings game are fairly simple, and easy to grasp. For those who play the game will know exactly what I am talking about.
Lets start with basics shall we? I am not talking about using the fellowship itself, I am just taking about skirmishes that you and your buddies use after buying the core game, a few blisters, and terrian!
Lets talk say, 200 point army of good, shall we? I usually have my army with only one captian, usually an elven captian because they just have better stats and the price is right. usually an elvish spear/shield barer, thes guys do lots of damage! Sometimes I will also use Haldir as my captian as a wood elf (the two shots in the shooting phase really help!). For my archers I have two uses for them, primarily they are my missle and ranged attackers, and I also use them as basic infantry in a pinch. I use these guys non-stop during the opening of my games to mow down my enemy force. I usually have the maxium numbers of archers allowed (1/3 of your total force!). I have a mixture of archers, usually half as woodelves and the other half are high elf archers (I NEVER use human archers), I use the high elf archers mostly as my infantry or "assault archers" supporting my scores of elven/human infantry troops. I use my woodelves as more or less more long distance archers that take targets of oppotunity.
How to form up your ranks are simple, I usually have my high elves, humans, and my archers seperate. I would always use my humans first, they are cannon fodder as far as I am concerned, my elves are more or less my elites, and I use them as such (and usually they are led by my high elf captian should I select him). My archers are supporting roles, they allow the enemy to come into range and assault them with arrows, usually taking a flanking position on the enemy is great, never split up your enemy unless you're trying to get a single unit or group of models in a cross-fire situation, the more punch you have the better, so use your archers to drill against your foes first, but as soon as hadn to hand combat begins, move them to only fire on targets of opptunity as well as using your high elf archers to engage in hand to hand combat (but ONLY against weak enemies that are isolated from larger units!!!)
Now, as far as using the scores of Moria goblins correctly you must know their strengths. First off, I consider them to be very specialized infantry, they can climb sheer walls and can make any jump without taking a jump test, and they are extremely cheap!!! I also went out and purchased two blisters of Urak-Hai as my elite choices, and I always toss at least one or two urak-hai into any group of balanced Moria goblins to give them flavor. I always also use at least one urak-hai to lead my forces of evil.
Using the forces of evil are pretty simple, since you cant mow down your foes with arrows as well as you can with the side of good the side of evil takes a heavy back seat to the entire game, but are very useful in large numbers. use your archers in the beginning of the game to move rapidly as possible into a safe area to "hide" in a flanking position, use your HtH troops to move forward, then hold the position of your archers to cut down your enemy as he would approach your troops to counter their assault. After this, they are pretty much cannon fodder. When using your Moria goblins, take advantage of terrian that involve gaps and such, I did a scenerio where there were many small jumps between streams and such and because the forces of good had to roll for each jump they lost a few men and overall their assault was very sluggish, while my men just ran them down like pigs to the salughter. Oh, one more tip on the forces of evil, DONT use Orcs! They are worthless and a bit more expensive than Moria goblins and serve the same function but dont have the special rules.
Another good idea is to think of a basic battle plan in the beginning of the game, and stick with it all the way through, too many commanders think they are think on their feet but because they dont stick with the first intentions they lose the battle.
