Hey I was just watching a trailer to an upcoming movie (300) It looks like an awesome movie. Anyway, I had a thought... The main actor in the 300 (Gerard Butler) who plays (King Leonidas) would make an excellent "Bard" from Laketown... Thoughts??? Take a look at the trailer and tell me what you think!

Yip, I think you're right, he would!

For the voice of Smaug...
1. Jason Carter (Marcus from B5)
2. Clive Owen
3. Sam Neill
Sean Connery and James Earl Jones are too EXPECTED. After all, Sean did several dragons already and JEJ's Darth Vader is just not right.
The perfect voice would have been James Mason - just the right combination of suave and evil...
Your thoughts??

I like Sam Neill's voice

January 30th,2007, 07:20 PM
I totally agree that Gerard would be great Bard (and one more reason to go and see The Hobbit for at least five times).
For the voice of Smaug, hmmm, it's kind of hard, but Sam Neill would be good. I just wouldn't like to hear some familiar voice from LOTR movie, it would be too creapy.

Voice of Smaug? Of course, he would have to learn an accent, but how bout someone like Dennis Hastert? ("24") Or Robbie Benson (he did the beast in Beauty and the Beast
Faramir
January 31st,2007, 03:17 AM
I always thought Alan Rickman would be a good voice for Smaug.
ImDaMom
January 31st,2007, 03:54 AM
How bout Hugh Laurie? Sort of dusky, rough, yet appealing
Idril-Celebrindal
January 31st,2007, 07:15 PM
Oh, yes, the guy from Beauty and the Beast would be nice. I love that voice.
But I would like to see who will be Tharanduil. It is a bit intriguing, will he have any features that would tell he is Legolas' father. I think they did nice casting in LOTR with Elrond and Arwen (because they did look like father and doughter).
What dou you think? Do you have anyone in mind?
Eowyn
January 31st,2007, 08:51 PM
oooh How about Brian Blessed as the voice of Smaug. He has a very powerful and conmmanding voice. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000306/
Although he always reminds me of John Ryhs-Davies so he might make a better Dwarf... although he's a tall bloke again so body size double would definately be required.
Fingolfin
February 1st,2007, 01:30 AM
For the voice of smaug how bout... Sir Anthony Hopkins... suave, intelligent, and a little evil as well... A little Hanible wouldn't hurt in the role of a dragon???
As for Tharanduil, that would be tough... I always thought that Haldir (Craig Parker) would have made a good Tharanduil but can't do that now... I just don't know... Somone tall, and has a kingly sense about him.... thoughts???

What do you think if Jeremy Irons did the voice of Smaug?
ImDaMom
February 2nd,2007, 03:31 PM
Jeremy Irons? I'd keep thinking of Scar in The Lion King. Sir Anthony may make a great dragon "I'll eat you dwarves with some fava beans and a nice chianti" lol
Amithrellas
February 2nd,2007, 03:51 PM
lol
My first thought was Jeremy Irons, too. But then I thought of Sean Bean  It would do for him to elevate himself after crashing and burning on that muck "The Hitchhiker" *bleecch!*
A Yorkshire accent might do perfectly for Smaig ;)
Eowyn
February 2nd,2007, 09:10 PM
mmmmm yes but then you'd be swooning over the dragon!
Jeremy Irons might work. If we're going to go down the route of British actors that play bad guys there's always Alan Rickman. lol
SamwiseAtHeart
February 2nd,2007, 09:15 PM
What about Patrick Stewart?
Faramir
February 3rd,2007, 07:29 AM
i think i'd much rather have some unknown do Smaug's voice. I'd rather not have a picture of someone in my head when watching it.
Lessa
February 3rd,2007, 02:15 PM
with Rickman you need to see the actor as he uses his whole body not just the voice
SamwiseAtHeart
February 3rd,2007, 07:12 PM
I was thinking what about Albert Finney, or maybe Jonathan Freeman (He's the guy who does the voice of Jafar in Aladdin)
Morgan Freeman might be good too...
Fingolfin
February 8th,2007, 02:03 AM
Samwise,
I definately like the choice of Patrick Stewart for Smaug... And I'd bet he would do it for a cup of Earl Grey "Hot"!!! LOL ;)
But what I really want to know who would be the best choice for Tharanduil???
Hey everyone... Since were talking about potential actors for the Hobbit some of us might not know who the person/actor is that your suggesting... Why not insert a link so we could see who your talking about?? Thoughts? I think it would just make it easier for everyone to see who it is.. Maybe I'm just lazy cause I don't want to search for each suggestion! LOL

What would you think about Dennis Quaid as Thranduil?
Here's a link to the things he's done
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000598/
ImDaMom
February 8th,2007, 02:53 PM
I don't see tall, elegant elf when I think "Dennis Quaid". Perhaps Beorn. How about Daniel Craig for Thranduil. Imagine a long blonde wig with that chisled jaw....mmmmm...could be pretty :flamer:
Fingolfin
February 8th,2007, 06:51 PM
Neah... When I think of Beorn I think of a huge man... To bad Andre the Giant passed away. Beorn has to be a big presence. Maybe a pro wrestler??? Remember Beorn was a changling and turned into a huge bear.
Daniel Craig... Hmmm.. To me he just doesn't look the part. I don't know. The actor for Tharanduil is going to have to look a little like legolas. Tall and Elegant is a must and I agree about that.. I have a feeling this part will be an actor of unknown status.
ImDaMom
February 8th,2007, 07:10 PM
Big guy, commanding precence? How about Michael Clarke Duncan. Sure, he's African American, but it might be an interesting take on the character.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers for Thranduil? Looks elvish enough for me. Great high cheekbones, not unlike Orlando.
Fingolfin
February 9th,2007, 12:56 AM
Yes Yes... That Johnathan guy would definately make a good Tharanduil!!! As for Beorn... The jury is still out on that one... :-/
SamwiseAtHeart
February 9th,2007, 02:12 AM
I like Michael Clarke Duncan. I don't think that being African American would make too much of a difference if he did Beorn. When I pictured Beorn, I actually thought of someone big and kind a lot like Michael, even with darker skin than I pictured the rest of the characters. I think it fits him since he changes into a bear.
ImDaMom
February 9th,2007, 02:44 AM
I like MCD....he's big, bearish and has a very commanding voice. Now what about younger Bilbo? To find someone close to Ian Holm but younger could be a problem. That one may have to be an unknown!
And for those who don't know Jonathan Rhys Meyers....http://bestof.provocateuse.com/show/jonathan_rhys_meyers
Fingolfin
February 9th,2007, 05:49 AM
Do you really think he could pull it off (Michael Clarke Duncan)?? I definately like his commanding voice but I was picturing someone like Bluto in Popeye... LOL! That may seem funny but that's the picture that sticks in my head....
I think, if the movies are done soon enough they could still use Ian Holm, with a little make up and Hollywood magic I think that is still very possible. If we look back at when Bilbo (Ian) found the ring in the Fellowship they made him look perfect. I would just like them to keep as many original people as they can. I mean lets face it... The Hobbit won't be the same without the original Gandalf, Elrond, Bilbo, heck even Gloin if you caught the glimps of him at Elronds Council in the Fellowship... Am I making any sense??? LOL
Lessa
February 9th,2007, 10:21 AM
What about Brian Blessed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Blessed) for Beorn?
I like Jonathan Rhys Meyers for Tharanduil
Fingolfin
February 9th,2007, 05:20 PM
Yeah Lessa!! That's what I'm talking about and he is exactly what I picture in my mind for Beorn...
I definately agree on Jonathan for Tharanduil.
SamwiseAtHeart
February 10th,2007, 10:32 PM
ooh that guy looks good. I can picture him as Beorn
Lessa
February 11th,2007, 12:56 PM
he is a larger than life character in everything he does and has a rich booming voice
Cassandria
February 11th,2007, 04:00 PM
I saw a picture of Raiin Wilson in Entertainment Weekly that jumped out at me as a young Bilbo! :whoohoo: Don't think of him the way he looks on his show, The Office, they have him too geeked up there...but picture his face in a curly Hobbit wig. lol I dunno, he just struck me as a possible young Ian. :p
I might add, that I've never seen him act, never saw The Office, so I might be way off. lol
Faramir
February 11th,2007, 07:02 PM
what about Martin Freeman as a younger Bilbo? http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/6/69/The_late_dentarthurdent.jpg

February 12th,2007, 12:36 AM
What about Robbie Coltrane for Beorn?
Fingolfin
February 12th,2007, 03:34 PM
Yeah Robbie Coltrane he would make a wonderful Beorn. He did a wonderful job as Rubeus Hagrid. However don't you think that when watching the Hobbit we might think "Hey there's Hagrid... I always knew he was good with animals!" LOL
I still think Brian Blessed would be awesome.. He hasn't been in a movie lately that I know of but so far I think he is the best canidate!
Idril-Celebrindal
February 12th,2007, 07:32 PM
Oh, yes, Jonathan for Tharanduil! He looks enough snobish for an elf.
But I'm also partialy yes to Daniel Craig. Although it might be a bit weird.
And Brian Blessed would be nice Beorn.
Martin Freeman does look hobbity enough for Bilbo. :)
But I can't wait to see the dwarves, poor actors with all the beards. :p
SamwiseAtHeart
February 12th,2007, 09:17 PM
Hopefully the dwarve actors won't be allergic to the stuff put on their face like poor John-Rys Davies was.
Fingolfin
February 12th,2007, 10:28 PM
I can't wait to see what the Dwarve army looks like!
Eldarion

But I'm also partially yes to Daniel Craig. Although it might be a bit weird.
Daniel Craig? He was okay as the new Bond, but it seems he can't act his way out of a paper bag.
Eldarion
February 13th,2007, 03:54 AM
How about Kevin Nash (http://www.therealmccoys.com/images/unsigned/KNASH9.JPG) as Beorn?
Just saw him in "The Punisher" - I think he would be just the right blend of striking and menacing .... :)
Fingolfin
February 13th,2007, 04:31 PM
Yeah he would be good too! Eldarion have you seen Flash Gordon? As for me, Brian Blessed would be my choice.. He was awesome in that movie as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen. I think he would do awesome. Plus he's really not in the mainstream so I think he would be a wonderful choice.... :)
Idril-Celebrindal
February 13th,2007, 07:20 PM
Samwise, I hope that too.
Eldarion: that's why it would be weird to see him as Tharanduil. I'm still not clear how I like him as the new Bond. :-/

I was watching "Babylon 5: Crusade" episodes this weekend and Peter Woodward (Galen) has the absolutely *perfect* voice for Smaug. It may need a little reverb, that all - charmingly evil and uncaringly vicious. Peter's father is Edward Woodward, of "The Equalizer" fame.
Here's a sample: http://www.pathcom.com/~cozens/galen/audio/alwayshope.wav
Lessa
February 21st,2007, 11:16 AM
yes his voice would be just right
Fingolfin
February 21st,2007, 04:00 PM
I agree the accent is perfect but still he needs to have a deeper voice. I know, I know, they can make that happen with sound effects and movie magic. I like the idea of Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean Luke Picard) doing the voice too. So many great ideas!!!
MaielAlcinoe
February 21st,2007, 09:05 PM
Peter Woodward would make a great voice for Smaug, he has similar voice qualities to Patrick Stewart.
Brian Blessed would be great as one of the dwarves! He wouldn't need the beard. :p
Michael Clarke Duncan would be an interesting choice for Beorn, not one I would have thought of myself but he does have the larger than life appearence the character needs. Kevin Nash could work but hmmmm....
Fingolfin
March 13th,2007, 12:39 AM
Very True! All these are great choices! Who do you think should play the part for the Dwarves? Well known actors or nobodies??? Hmmmmm?

you could get away with mostly unknowns as noone can see their faces but a well known voice should be used for Thorin Oakenshield.
Fingolfin
March 14th,2007, 02:12 AM
Oh definately... Thorin is a big part in the Hobbit!
Lessa
March 14th,2007, 01:33 PM
the question is Who?
Fingolfin
March 14th,2007, 05:20 PM
The actor for Thorin would have to have a deep voice as well. He would also have to be able to speak majestically.... Hmmmmm???? How about Sean Connery???
Lessa
March 16th,2007, 02:02 PM
Possibly but for some reason I think he is wrong no idea why but just a feeling. How about Anthony Hopkins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Hopkins) or Ray Winstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Winstone)
Thranduil could be Robert Powell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Powell)
Fingolfin
March 19th,2007, 04:35 PM
Good one Lessa! He definately has the look of an Elf. Long Slender face! Would definately make a good Thranduil!
Lessa
March 19th,2007, 10:10 PM
yes he has that calm authority but can be very comedic as well
Fingolfin
March 20th,2007, 01:35 AM
Talking about this really makes things come to life. I really hope we start seeing some action on the movie pretty soon. It's hard to wait for something so HUGE! It would be nice if "people" would see our thoughts and opinions on who should be playing the parts in the Hobbit and the prequel. It would really make this site bust with excitement ya know? Could you just imagine if one of the people or a few of the people happen to show up in the film... God! that would just be the .... Ya know?

I heard that Ian McKellen might play as Gandalf. And also I heard that Ian Holm might do Biblo. But correct me if I am wrong.:ring:

i strongly doubt Ian Holm will play Bilbo. The guy's 75 years old and from what i hear, doesn't have the best of health.

I feel sorry for him. He was a good actor
IronHills Dwarf
March 30th,2007, 05:09 AM
Oh he's still making films. :p But he's at an age where the physical requirements for the role of Bilbo (remember, a much younger version of Bilbo than he played before) would be highly unrealistic and a bit unkind to expect of him. ;)
Young_marie
March 30th,2007, 04:28 PM
I highly think that when they do it it would not be noticeable that he looks young.

March 23rd,2008, 03:07 PM
Ok .. how about Ron Pearlman for Smaug? GREAT voice!!
Thranduil - hmm.. I really like the idea of Daniel Craig. Jason Isaacs would have been brilliant if he hadn't already done the Harry P films

He does the stern, obey me now kind of thing very well. He'd be a wonderful Thranduil
Eowyn

It's his eyes. Something in his eyes says 'obey me now' and you take one look and go think "yup sure"
I am loving the image in my head of him as Thranduil
