I love the intro by Christopher ...
"... the story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World."
Maybe we'll get information on what happened to the beloved Entwives?
Anyway, bring on the story!

ONly one more day! :whoohoo: :whoohoo: :whoohoo:
Dunthule-- no, i don't think we'll hear about the Entwives since this is a First Age story probably elaborating only on Turin's tale from Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and probably from HOME too so it's purely Elvish. =)
Dunthule
April 16th,2007, 04:32 PM
Yes, that's what I thought too.
If memory serves me correctly, didn't the elves bring the trees to life in their way? I may be wrong on that. Anyway, if my memory is correct, I thought that this story, hopefully having ancient elves in it, my have a short side story about the Ents.
Just 1 day!!!!

A bit from the review:
"Túrin was slow to forget injustice or mockery," Tolkien writes, "and he could be sudden and fierce. Yet he was quick to pity, and the hurts or sadness of living things might move him to tears." A dark cloud follows him, and Tolkien lays on the omens of foreboding: you get the sense that Túrin was born under an unlucky star.
He's a very tragic hero and yes, this book is dark. Surely this is very different from The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings but it is expected if you've already read UT and Sil. Very interesting other side of Tolkien we're exposed to here...

Obviously it's preliminary and HP isn't even out yet but it's cool that Tolkien has such an appeal to top a very popular Harry Potter.
It's surprising but I know that the Tolkien love is oh so very strong even though Tolkien has been dead for 34 years...
I just found that interesting... ;) ;)

I read Sil so many moons ago and really lost track if I remember.

And concerning TCoH overtaking HP at Amazon, I beleive JRRT's works will always have staying power over the contemporary fantasy novels such as HP. (I have nothing against HP or others.)

I got the book yesterday and dove right into it! What a beautiful story it is ... and heartbreaking in so many places.

I agree. The HP series is quite a good, fun read but Tolkien's work, especially something like CoH is at a different level. "Dorkier" I guess, if I go along with that TIME article. I don't go along with that though, I think it's richer and more beautiful.
It was Sauron in the 2nd Age, too, running around making Rings, getting the party ready in Mordor and corrupting Numenoreans. Couldn't stay quiet, that one. :)

I did! Even though it was so tragic and i know what happens due to reading Sil and UT multiple times. I am currently obsessing over what other reviewers have to say-- It seems like most thought that Sil was a hard read... was it really? I really loved reading Sil second time through and feel like i could obsess about First Age Men and Elves too. lol
Eledhwen-- i'm itching to discuss ANYTHING relating to CoH-- most definitely it'll be interesting to discuss/really analyze Turin's character and the reasons for his downfall.

My question is, does this rehash of the story via Christopher bring anything to the table that those of us who've waded through The History of Middle-earth series will not have already encountered?

That's a good question, IronHills Dwarf--
I haven't read HOME yet, have only read one volume of it but from what i've gathered from reading CoH after Sil and UT, i find it a more cohesive narrative with some dialogue that was only put as footnotes in UT. I must admit that there were A LOT of overlap between the Narn in UT with CoH which hindered upon my enjoying it to the utmost extent. I know that in Lost Tales 2, there is a lay from Hurin or something and that is not included in CoH.
It *could* be thought of a "rehash" but again, if you're looking for a "gap-filler" type story in which you didn't have enough of in Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, i woudl greatly recommend it. (I really liked Turin's story so didn't mind this new "version" of it.)
My review and exerpts that is posted on my livejournal:
Few dark tales can capture you like The Chlidren of Hurin does especially since I’ve seen this story in some form before in The Silmarillion (Sil) and Unfinished Tales (UT). But perhaps there’s some magical quality to the Narn I Chin Hurin-- something even beyond the beautiful illustrations of Alan Lee and the excitement of having another Tolkien book to read after thirty years since the publication of The Silmarillion, CoH seamlessly weaves together the tidbits of a grand tale from Narn from UT and Sil and therefore makes it a very worthwhile tale to “reread”. Because of such a good job that Christopher Tolkien did in “putting together” different drafts and passages that his father had been writing since 1918, this stand alone tale is really worth being a book of its own.

I haven't read HOME either, Peri An ;) I thought this was a much better read than Unfinished Tales, though. Much more engaging for being more of a complete tale, rather than a collection of annotations - which on first glance, is what I take HOME for... My eyes glaze over when I pick a copy off the shelf and glance thru it
Periantari Andruil
April 27th,2007, 06:19 AM
I agree that HOME seems to be a hard read... i do intend to try and read it all when time allows though. Would love to read more about Gondolin and earlier drafts of LotR when Aragorn was Trotter and Frodo was Bingo. lol

I've read about 5 chapters or so now. It was slow going at first (like the intro through five pages into chapter one, or so), but I've started to get the "map in my head" of early ME geography and peoples, and I'm also remembering things from the SIL, so it's getting easier as I go along. It's definitely worth the read! lol I like how it deals with a human predominately. Much as I love elves (and hobbits, and ents, and...) I'm enjoying this different POV of ME.
As to it being a re-hash... some might call it that. I'm not certain. It's been too long since I last read the SIL or the other early writings. I am coming across things that I remember from the SIL, for certain, but I'd have to know it better to say for sure.

Ted Nasmith is my other favourite LotR illlustrator. I <3 his art in the SIL.

Yeah, and John Howe is great too. I think I saw a painting by him of Turin slaying Glaurung. I saw it on a catalogue I got which was featuring CoH.

I'm a huge Ted Nasmith fan; met him twice and he is a very charming man. (He has an awesome Beatles act with his brother, too. roflmao )
I've always liked Allan Lee's art too, but not as much. His colors have always have seemed drab to me and I haven't been too crazy about the faces he paints.
But the art that he did in The Children of Hurin is so awesome! It has an extra special quality, I don't know if it is the special binding in the deluxe edition that I bought or if it is just the art alone. It draws me into the story; it plays the mood and leaves me feeling as though I can hear the very sounds of the birds, feel the echo of the air about me, feel the deep pitted anguish of Hurin as he sat in that hate-hardened chair! I thought the colors were perfect for this tale and the faces much improved. And finally, I also really like the little pencil sketches that they placed here and there. They make the story more vivid in my mind.

I really loved the book. It was great to read every thing in a little more detail then what was told in the Sil and the Unfinished tales... It was a very sad ending though and I wish the outcome would have been different. I just like happy endings... I wish thats the way it could always be....

I know. Like, reading the book makes you feel so blessed and fortunate that aren't in the story yourself. :(

lol I'm with you on that one. The ending nearly had me weaping for all the tragedy! *sigh* I loved the added detail too. :) I wish there was even more to read. Perhaps Christopher will write more things from his father's notes? That would be cool!

LOL, yeah, I'm sure. ;) I read the shorter version in The Silmarillion, so I'm assuming that it's pretty much the same.

I think "Unfinished Tales" actually HAS most of the text of "Children of Hurin" in one of its chapters, believe it or not.

It's something you really don't want to miss out on. And if you're reading "Unfinished Tales", you could probably skip the long chapter I mentioned above, since it is what CoH mostly contains.

I haven't read Children of Hurin yet but it does sound good!
I also haven't read Unfinished Tales yet, but I''m getting Histories of Middle-Earth for Christmas. Don't know how much alike they are...

Hey there guys, I hope you don't if I give you a quick heads up on the new limited edition of The Children Of Hurin.
If this offends anyone as spam, I apologise. But I feel this is totally appropriate to these forums...and may well be somethinf you'd like to buy....
Obviously, you're all aware of the Children Of Hurin...(well, the people watching/writing in this thread)
What you may not know is that Harper Collins are releasing a very special edition. We’re looking for ways to reach out to grass roots Tolkien fans and we feel one of the best way to do this is through the various fantasy-based forums and communities online. We want to extend this offer initially to real fans who would appreciate the collectability of this very special book..
Here’s a bit of info about the special edition, and how it differs from the edition already in circulation.
• Painstakingly restored from Tolkien’s various manuscripts by his son, Christopher, and illustrated by Alan Lee
• Each copy signed and numbered by Christopher Tolkien & Alan Lee
• Strictly limited to just 500 hand-numbered copies
• Unique illustrations and two-colour fold-out map
• Leather-bound and hand-sewn
• Custom leather clamshell case
We have set up a sale page for the book here http://store.tolkien.co.uk/
Originally, this book was only available for purchase in the U.K. But due to massive interest from international customers, Harper-Collins is now happy to take orders from around the world.
If you want to get your hands on a copy, you can email them at info@store.tolkien.co.uk . If you can supply them the quantity of the products you want, your delivery address and, if you would prefer them to take your order by phone, a contact telephone number, one of their customer services representatives will contact you asap within UK working hours to take your order.
Unfortunately, due to the matter of publishing rights, the book cannot be delivered to the U.S. Having said this, some American customers are buying the book, and having it sent to a UK address for either collection or to be sent on.
I hope some of you guys take up the offer to own something very special indeed, the book is already selling fast!
