View Full Version : French. . . not a Middle Earth Language, but hey. . . .

Does anyone speak French? Does anyone even care about French? Do you think that if Tolkien had not created his own languages he would have used French? This is for any discussion on French since I have regretably annoyed the Elvish people. (I'm truly sorry!:( ) Anyway, in my arrogance, I'm only going for what I know! Hovever, vive l'elvish! Again, all apologies!

Hi there.....I hate to be a stickler, but this particular forum is for discussion of Middle-earth languages, not a general language discussion board. Why don't you move this topic to the Prancing Pony, where you can discuss "whatever your heart desires." ;)

I have one! Umm, is it "croc", which is "fang":dragon: Or, well, actually, that's all I can think of. Second word, I don't know! I have only my Larousse Dictionary with me. . . . In what context was it? Was he angry? Now I feel incredibly:duh: ! But I've only really learned standard French, it's most likely slang, like, "She's such a dog" or something. I could ask my French teacher. . . . I hate when I don't know something! I'm so arrogant!:boohoo:

?!? I don't think that our French class is that easy, either that or ils sont tres bête? Je ne sais pas. But usually, few people take French in my school. Most take Spanish and German. Elrenia
September 24th,2002, 02:11 PM
Well, in theory it is supposed to be this way but each person is different, you know, it can also go with your interest in the language...
Take me for example, in theory I should have facility to learn Spanish since this language is similar to French, I have been taking I don't know how many classes but with no result, I just can't learn this language (plus the teacher was always very very boring)...and you know what is funny I am in an advanced level in German and I think Russian is not that hard to learn ( I know already my alphabet).
But anyway, the best way to learn a language is not by taking classes but by immersion in the countries where they speak the language you want to learn...That's my point...:)
For me now, what I have to work is my accent...I have an all mixed up accent (French, NY, Canadian, Irish accent)...I just wish I could have the Brit accent, I just fell in love with it....aahhh  Soooo charming....

You mentioned 'immersion' Elrenia, thats the method my own French teacher uses.
Its means that there is absolutely no English spoken in class, ever! Insructions in French, lessons in French, and student conversations in French. I don't talk much in that class. ;)
Lady of Rohan
September 24th,2002, 11:11 PM
My German class is like that. The first week she spoke English but never since. The diff. is that I love it! It's a lot of fun.
My French class on the other hand is not like that at all. It bugs me, the teacher never speaks French with us. Even when I'm like "Bonjour M. 'Arrison," he answers, "Hey! What's up?" Like, yeah, we're gonna learn French so quickly that way.
I'm in French IV and German III but I'm ever so much better at speaking German (though of course my vocab is much larger in French).
Nessa
September 25th,2002, 12:35 AM
How can you possibly take two foreign language classes at the same time?!? Especially three and four... don't you get confused?
A friend of mine took French and Spanish at the same time, and she finally gave up Spanish because she got the two mixed up so much! Maybe its because French and German are a lot less similar than French and Spanish...
Lady of Rohan
September 25th,2002, 12:43 AM
Well... I enjoy it a lot.
I want to take Spanish too but I have no time. :(
It's not easy to mix them up in my mind, but when I'm speaking I do it a lot. oh, well, I'm sure I'm not the only one. :)

There are so many different brit accents though. Even though i'm from essex i don't have a cockney accent (i can't stand it!) I suppose my accent's quite posh...for the area...but i go to a grammar school and most people talk like that soo...

Yeah everybody has one...Here in Quebec we have a very different accent from those French from Paris....Or they hate our accent or they love it or they don't even understand it...
I think personnally that every accent has it own charm...or you like it or you don't ... For me the accent that always mix me up is the Texan one ...can even understand a word, it always seems to me (Texan men) that they try to flirt... :naughty: lol (No offense for Texan who read this post :smooch: )

lol dont worry Pil.. i'm not that good at french either :) i wanna go to France some day - i've never been.
But i've got a funny French story... this guy named Sean in my French class works at a supermarket and there is this 50 (yes FIFTY) year old guy who works there too. His name is Pierre so Sean goes to him, "il fait beau, non?" and the guy just gave him a weird look and walked away. We're all like "Sean, are you SURE that he's French?" and so genious says, "Well, he's gotta be French! his name's Pierre!" lol

I am pretty sure you would be able to understand me....I don't speak that fast, plus I am used to be with people whom French is their second language...so at least you would understand a French Canadian one...though my French is more standard French...I have not much accent...result of my translation studies...

lol well a lil of both... it was on February vacation. Our French class all went together. We had to hand in money to cover the rooms and busses, but it was like to hear French-speaking people and to get an idea of their culture i guess. We were supposed to only speak french to the people up there (that's why we went to Quebec City instead of Montreal) but sometimes they would speak english to us if they heard us speaking english. It was lots of fun! :)

I think this is the time, Bawax, where we really need to have a 'father - son' discussion. :jester:
I hate to see nice guys like you being burned and scorched by the exploding fire of real women
roflmao
need some sound advice? use hot-waterbottles... an old joke tells British people have them, whereas continental people have ordinary erotic lives
Ohhhhhhh, and as to scars , wait till the mental ones are really coming.... tiny little things as physical ones will evaporate ;)
:jester: Feeling the leg being pulled a bit???
I tried to do it gently :) ;) ;) ;)
PLEASE LET'S ALL GO BACK TO FRENCH
I will be the first one to break the English-spoken rule... my next entry is gonna be a French Poem. Elrenia or anyone else could follow it up with an English translation :jester: Fools are often too lazy to do that roflmao

:jester:
here is my challenge: A poem/song by the German/French singer/songwriter Reinhard Mey
Et quand tu m'es venue c'était me revenir
:angel: Well you frenchspeaking gals and guys translate it :jester;

I did not know that you before knowing you I knew only you even without the knowledge Where you were I knew the to recognize since our meeting was one goodbye By the color C honey I knew your hair I saw in the rainbow the color of your eyes It is you whom I heard when It fell the rain is you whom I waited my love my friend I nái known that you before knowing you By dividing into sheets the pages of my memories I find you, you, all that you can be And when you came to me was to return itself I listened to the night in strange gardens And in its thousand noises your voice in the distance showed the way to me which I followed since I find you finally my love, my friend I loved only you before knowing you I nái liked that you, even without the knowledge I na' liked that you, early what you can be Ainsi our meeting was one goodbye (2*) ?

Well, Aerandir, good try, but Babel Fish can't translate poetry :jester:
How about this for a start, I guess Elrenia will protest  but I am the poet, not the interpreter/translator:
You were the one I knew, even before i knew you,
You were the one I knew although i did not know
And everywhere you were i always recognised you
So when we met at last it was just to re-meet
Rich amber honey is like the colour of your hair
And in the rainbow i saw the shade of your eyes
In soft raindrops falling i did hear your voice
You were the one I waited for sweetheart, my loved one
Who does the second part????
:jester:
Elrenia
November 18th,2002, 04:06 PM
Well it is an excellent start...because like literature, poems are very hard to translate since you have to respect the idea of the author and try to be him while you translate it.
So we cannot say that it is real translation but mostly a version of the poem since the heart of it is in French..;)
So it is well translated Rid, in my opinion it gives a very good idea of the original...
BTW...should I feel concerned about doing the second part ???:p

No problems with that at all, Elrenia roflmao

I know quite a bit in french. I'm doing the french imersion program in Canada. So, I've been going to school in french now for close to 3 years. Est-ce que tu aime de parle en francais? (There are supposed to be accents there, but I can't find the alt code.)

December 12th,2002, 06:22 PM
:jester: Sorry Ruthiel... I am breaking the rule on English-speaking already with entering the poem i did.... but French with some English transcription would be nice.... I did 5 years of french when i was in school... and went to France on many occasions and I guess some French in the French thread SHOULD be there in fact

A translation of what I said? Well, basically "Do you like speaking french?" I think it's a great language, and my dad said he'd take me to Paris or Quebec at the end of gr 9. Only 6 months left! Yay! :whoohoo: :read: (I'm just having fun with the smilies...)

J'ai très bien compris ce que tu disais, Ruthiel :), je parle le français bien, parceque je l'ai entendu pendant ma jeunesse. Ma grand-mère paternelle était une Française. ;)
For catz and the others pfbbt :
I did understand very well what you said, Ruthiel :), I speak French well, because i heard it in my youth. My granny on fathers side was French ;)
Nope, Ruthiel, you did not need to translate for me but for all those who dont speak French but still like to look at this thread.

Une femme française came to our little American school. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but somehow, in America, European people are revered as infinately cool, and so she was. I don't know why, but I thought I would say. Bon.
