I'm kinda "borrowing" this thread from the Barnes and Noble (?right name?) online class....
In what form do you think the Ringwraiths are most frightening? As the black riders, or as Frodo sees them on Weathertop?
My opinion is that both are equally frightening - the black riders for the "unknown" quality, and the way Frodo sees them trapped between the living and the dead - to be caught between these worlds, and to know that that is a possibility for Frodo.
What d'ya think??

I agree with equally frightening. It's not so much their appearance that is scary, it's the fact that they are Sauron's immortal assassins. For those who knew the complete history of the Wraiths, they would be intimidating indeed!

Definatly, I mean seeing someone half dead is pretty scary enough but to know that you have an unkown force constantly following you aiming to kill is just as freaky.

We are more frightening when we are in our black riders form. Because we make people think we are normal breathing and eating humans, and then they see we are undead creatures of pain, misery, and evil.
You do not want to meet me, or any of my kind.

Although I liked their appearance as Frodo saw them on Weathertop, I prefer to see them as riders "disguised in black".

Ringwraith....from that description.....i married someone like you!!!;)
but yeah, i think i prefer the riders in black.....much more mysterious and the root of horror is the unknown......

I love them as the black riders, too. The fact that they can "sniff" out their quarry makes them even more menacing.
LOL! A phobia of marriage is exactly what I have. I haven't married at all. *shudders at the thought* A guy I had been dating for a while brought marriage up in a conversation over dinner once and I broke out in hives. I blamed it on the green peppers.

I think the Ringwraiths are scarier as Black Riders. Yes, their true forms are terrifying for what you know them to be, but the black shrauds are so much more terrifying for what you do not know...

how sweet! you seem to have lost your touch though.
especially considering previous comments about how you should wear Pink! I agree that it would be much scarier.

I remember when I read the LOTR for the first time, I was on the edge of my seat when the Black Riders appeared. I think because you could read that they were black-clad horsemen, that the mystery of their hidden body was very frightening.....it made you want to know what they looked like all the more. The anticipation of reading what they looked like was very intense.

Ha, Eowyn, something must have go wrong on Pelennor Fields
- here I am, and I feel very alive!
@Catz: I am not very amused about you telling the whole world
about my underwear.... *lol*
Okay, now seriously: I also think the Riders are more frightening
as Black Riders, cause of the already mentioned reasons.
But I never imagined the uncloaked Wraiths that ugly as shown
in the movie.... They look great, that's no question, but a bit too
ugly for my opinion. Tolkien just wrote pale and haggard men.

darn you're back! oh well, gives me a reason to fight again! I'll go fetch my sword.
anyway I agree that they are more scary as black riders than their true form. although please consider the pink! lol

Or Magenta! Or a nice Coral.....
Anyway, I think the wringwraiths frightened me the most after they traded their horses in for winged steeds, robes or no robes. The screams that froze men's souls... *shudder*
