The Fellowship of the Ring Prologue (Introduction)

Hard and bitter is the Elven hatred of Orcs, for they have lost many kinsmen to Orc savagery	Keen Elven eyes see farther and more clearly than those of Men or Dwarves	"We live now upon an island amid many perils, and our hands are more often upon the bowstring than upon the harp."
Among the alliance of all the Free Peoples of Middle-earth were these Bowmen of Gondor, loosing a volley of arrows (note the Black Standard, with the White Tree and the Seven Stars)
Soldiers of the White Tower have long appreciated the craftsmanship of the Gondorian metalsmiths	"Then Elendil the Tall and his mighty sons, Isildur and Anárion, became great lords;  and the North-realm they made in Arnor, and the South-realm in Gondor..."	The Kingdom of Gondor has smiths much practiced in creating strong tools of war
The Last Alliance of Elves and Men
Sauron's shadow stretched far over the land as he cruelly enslaved the Free Peoples of Middle Earth.  Despair and fear fell across the world until a Last Alliance of Elves and Men, under the leadership of the Elven-king Gil-galad and Elendil, High King of Gondor, was forged in a desperate attempt to break his power. On the slopes of Mount Doom, their great army drove back the Dark Lord's forces;  but there Gil-galad, though as an immortal elf-lord he was never born to die, perished beneath the heat of Sauron's hand;  and Elendil fell, too, breaking beneath him his legendary greatsword Narsil, which had been forged in the First Age by the dwarves.  His son Isuldur, prince of Gondor, took up the shard and with its sharp edge struck from the Dark Lord's hand the One Ring, thus breaking at last his will and power. Then the One Ring should have been destroyed;  but Isuldur succumbed to its seductive power and refused to cast it into the fires of Mount Doom.  Instead, he carried it with him until he fell prey to orcs at the Gladden Fields, and there, in the waters of the great River Anduin, the Ring was once more lost. Thus ended the Dark Years of the Second Age of Middle-earth, and the Third Age began.  For thousands of years since that time, Sauron has concentrated his efforts on rebuilding his armies and on his search for the Ruling Ring.  But the Ring would not lie still, and by various means has made a long, strange journey.

	Elendil cut the ring from Sauron's hand, but he perished in the battle.  Isildur, Elendil's son, took The Ring, as weregild for his father, and his brother, Anárion, but it betrayed him as he swam in the Anduin by the Gladden Fields and he was slain by Orcs and the Ring was lost... After the great battle, the Ring of Power was lost for centuries, waiting to be found
