| Frodo: |
Come on... (The Hobbits are in the woods, in the rain; they cross to the Bree Gates, which are closed after dark, and knock on the door) |
| Gatekeeper: |
What do you want? |
| Frodo: |
We're heading for the Prancing Pony... |
| Gatekeeper: |
Hobbits, four hobbits. What business brings you to Bree? |
| Frodo: |
We wish to stay at the Inn. Our business is our own. |
| Gatekeeper: |
Alright, young sir, I meant no offense. It's my job to ask questions after nightfall. There's talk of strange folk abroad. Can't be too careful... |
|
(The hobbits wander through the streets, encountering lots of
'big people' who say things like "Watch where you're walking",
as well as a nefarious character, eating a carrot and burping,
who is actually Peter Jackson in a cameo as Albert Dreary, Entertainer.
They see the Sign of the Prancing Pony and go inside)
| Frodo: |
Excuse me... |
| Butterbur: |
Good evening, little masters! If you're seekin' accomodation, we've got some nice cozy hobbit-sized rooms available, Mr. ...? |
| Frodo: |
Underhill, my name's Underhill. |
| Butterbur: |
Underhill? Hmm... |
| Frodo: |
We're friends of Gandalf the Grey. Can you tell him we've arrived? |
| Butterbur: |
Gandalf? Gandalf? Oh yes, I remember - elderly chap, big grey beard,
pointy hat! Not seen him for six months... |
| Sam: |
What do we do now? |
| Frodo: |
Sam, he'll be here, he'll come... |
| Patrons: |
(lots of snatches of conversation, laughter, etc., including "Get out of my way!" to Merry, making his way back to the Hobbits' table) |
| Pippin: |
What's that?! |
| Merry: |
This, my friend, is a pint! |
| Pippin: |
It comes in pints?! |
| Merry: |
Mmm... (agreeing, while taking a large sip) |
| Pippin: |
I'm getting one! |
| Sam: |
You've had a whole half already! |
|
(Pippin heads off to the bar to get himself a pint)
| Sam: |
That fellow's done nothin' but stare at you since we arrived. |
| Frodo: |
Excuse me? That man in the corner - who is he? |
| Butterbur: |
He's one of them Rangers, dangerous folk they are,
wanderin' the wilds. What his right name is I've never 'eard,
but 'round here he's known as 'Strider |
| Frodo: |
Strider... |
|
(Frodo sort of zones out, fingering the ring in his hands hearing a voice saying: "Baggins... Baggins... Baggins...")
| Pippin: |
Baggins? Sure I know a Baggins - he's over there. Frodo Baggins. He's my second cousin once removed on his mother's side, and my third cousin twice removed on his father's side, if you follow me... |
|
(Frodo is horrified and jumps up to rush over to the bar
to get Pippin to stop talking)
| Frodo: |
Pippin!! |
| Pippin: |
Steady on... |
|
(Frodo slips just as he is reaching for Pippin. He falls to the floor and the Ring, which he was still holding in his hand, 'accidentally' falls onto his finger and he disappears!)
