Scene 1:  Crossing the Plains   (Click HERE for the associated images)

(Aragorn is lying with his eyes closed and his ear pressed to the ground, listening for the sound of the trampling feet of the Uruk-hai they are tracking)

Aragorn: Their pace has quickened.  They must have caught our scent.  Hurry!

(He runs off)

Legolas: Come on, Gimli!

(He looks back at Gimli and then runs after Aragorn)

Gimli: (He pauses in his steps and huffs)

Three days’ and nights’ pursuit.  No food.  No rest.  And no sign of our quarry but what bare rock can tell.

(He runs after his companions)

(The Three Hunters run across rocks and plains, with Aragorn in the lead, followed by Legolas and Gimli.  From time to time, Legolas looks back to make sure that Gimli is keeping up.  Aragorn suddenly bends down to pick up an Elven brooch from the ground)

Aragorn: Not idly do the leaves of Lórien fall.

Legolas: (He stops and turns to Aragorn)

They may yet be alive.

Aragorn: Less than a day ahead of us.  Come!

(He runs off again)

(Gimli stumbles out from behind some rocks and rolls down a small hill to the ground)

Legolas: Come, Gimli!  We are gaining on them!

Gimli: (He is panting)

I am wasted on cross-country!  We dwarves are natural sprinters!  Very dangerous over short distances!

(The trackers come over a hill and pause as they gaze across the plains below)

Aragorn: Rohan.  Home of the horse-lords.  There is something strange at work here.  Some evil gives speed to these creatures, sets its will against us.

(Legolas runs ahead and looks out to the horizon)

Aragorn: Legolas, what do your Elf eyes see?

Legolas: The Uruks turn northeast.

(NOTE: it should have said northwest)

They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!

Aragorn: Saruman.

(cut to other scenes, then back)

Gimli: Keep breathing!  That’s the key!  Breathe!  Ho!

Legolas: They run as if the very whips of their masters were behind them.

Scene 2:  Orthanc vs Barad-Dûr, The Wildmen of Dunland, The
               Burning of Rohan
(Click HERE for the associated images)

(The Tower of Orthanc stands amidst the smoldering caverns of Isengard.  Saruman stands in his chamber communicating with Sauron, the Dark Lord, by means of the Palantir)

Saruman: The world is changing.

(The view changes to the Tower of Barad-dûr, with its huge orc armies on a bridge spanning a river of fire)

Who now has the strength to stand against the Armies of Isengard and Mordor?  To stand against the Might of Sauron and Saruman and the Union of the Two Towers?

(The camera pans upwards along the height of the Tower of Barad-dûr until the flaming Eye is in view)

Together, my lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle Earth.

(Flashback:  The trees around Isengard are being ripped down, chopped up and used to feed huge furnaces.  The caverns of Isengard glow with the reflections of the flames, the sounds of hammering fill the air and molten iron is poured into casts to forge the weapons of the Enemy)

The old world will burn in the fires of industry.  Forests will fall.  A new order will rise.  We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc.  We have only to remove those who oppose us.

(Saruman stands in the midst of a gathering of the Wildmen of Dunland)

Saruman: The horsemen took your land.  They drove your people into the hills to scratch a living off rocks.

Dunlander: Murderers!

Saruman: Take back the lands they stole from you!
Burn every village!

Crowd: (They are roaring with approval)

Argh!!

(As Saruman stands coldly still among the stampede, the mob charges off to destroy the country of Rohan)

(A Rohan village is in pandemonium as people try to escape the on-coming rampage)

Saruman: It will begin in Rohan.  Too long have these peasants stood against you.  But no more.

(A woman with her hand on a horse calls to her children)

Morwen: Éothain!  Éothain!  You’ll take your sister.
You’ll go faster with just two.

Freda: (Morwen is putting her onto the horse
in front of her brother)

But Papa says Éothain must not ride Garold,
he is too big for him!

Morwen: Listen to me.  You must ride to Edoras and raise the alarm.  Do you understand me?

Éothain: Yes, Ma!

Freda: (She is starting to cry)

I don’t want to leave!  I don't want to go, Mama!

Morwen: Freda, I will find you there.

(A woman screams)

Morwen: Quickly!

(The children ride off and she looks after them)

Go child!

(Dunlanders and Uruk-hai enter the village, burning and hacking, as the peasants scream and run in all directions.  Éothain and Freda weep as they look back from a distance)

Saruman: (He is speaking - once more - to Sauron)

Rohan, my lord, is ready to fall.
