LONDON FILM AND COMIC CON SUNDAY 7th MARCH

A Fan's Report by Yelsel

Having arrived at 10:15 AM and bought our tickets early for The Lord of the Rings talk we went through to the signing room, there we saw John Noble, Thomas Robins (Deagol) Andy Serkis, and Billy Boyd. Then further down at the other end was John Rhys Davies, Bob Anderson, Bruce Hopkins (Gamling) and Sala Baker. They all had really long queues for autographs, but later as I walked down Sala had no queue so I took the opportunity and stepped a little nearer to get a photo he saw me and called me over and asked if I'd like to be in the shot with him of course I was delighted so my son Shaun took the photo Sala was so lovely it really made my day (it almost made up for Viggo not being there sigh!!).

We also got to speak to Bruce Hopkins and get some photos with him he was charming.

There were two different talks at the same time (so unfortunately we could not do both), so we did not know, nor did we mind who we would have in our talk before we went in. It turned out to be Sala Baker, John Noble, Bob Anderson and Billy Boyd. Billy was talking about how much he had enjoyed being at the Academy Awards because 'people we knew were winning' and how he and Dom had been writing a story which was now ready to be made into a script. He also talked about the uncomfortable bicycle seats built into Treebeard that he and Dom spent so much time in, joking that he still has not quite recovered.

Bob Anderson recalled how emotional he felt when watching the filming of Boromir's death scene, praising the efforts of the stunt men and actors, saying he now feels after the enormous work on these films he's ready to retire. Sala talked about an accident when filming Helm's Deep which resulted in a wound to his head needing 9 staples and Viggos' broken tooth was also mentioned, however much he has enjoyed the experience he is relieved that after so many long months/years to be out of the uncomfortable prosthetics. John Rhys Davies came into the talk really late to very loud applause saying he'was very sorry he was late but had been in detention,' as soon as he came in he had everyone laughing as he climbed up on the table to demonstrate being on his knees wielding an axe like a"maniac dwarf". John Noble was asked about the oil which he poured over himself and said that he's not sure exactly, it was a quite unpleasant sticky mix of glycerine with other unknown substances and that some had gone into David Wenham's (Faramir) eyes and it apparently stung like mad.

When asked about Peter Jackson it was obvious they all had such immense affection and admiration for his directorial skills and his enthusiasm, along with his incredible ability to piece together such a massive venture. There were many more questions ranging from inspired to just silly, lots of praise for Billy's singing with requests for him to record a CD (he did say he had been in touch with some musicians he knows), I only wish I could remember more the talk lasted from about 4:15 PM to 5:40 PM and was very entertaining it ended off a really memorable day.
